Yesterday was a big festival for all Indians. The Festival of Dusshera and also Durga Puja. Festival of Dusshera is very special, because it is celebrated with an intention of conquering the good over the evil. In India there are huge celebrations where a statue of Raavan, the 9 headed demon king from the Ramayana is burned down signifying the victory of the good. On this day we mark the new beginnings and it is considered a very auspicious day to start anything new.

There are certain auspicious rituals that take place in homes and offices. We too had rituals performed in our office followed by snacks for the team. The whole factory was thoroughly cleaned up and then a Puja was done on all the office machinery on the factory floor. Since it is considered auspicious to start any new projects on this day, it is equally important to honor what is already there. On Dusshera day, people normally do a good luck ritual to their vehicles also. Basically, rituals are carried out on all machineries and vehicles to invoke the blessings of the Goddess to keep them protected and to get success from them.

On our factory floor the whole afternoon all the machines are stopped, they are cleaned up and then the rituals are performed. The local people of Oman who work at the factory also participate in these rituals, which feels good, seeing them respect other cultures.

The workers look forward to days like these, they get a break from the daily routines and also there are so many of them who are away from home, these little things bring cheer to them on the festival days where they are away from their homes and families. After all the celebrations work resumes back again.

These celebrations always make me remind of my corporate days back in Mumbai, where we used to have multiple celebrations in our office. We would have a traditional day, where all the females would wear saree or any other traditional attire and the man would also do the same. We would have some office lunch planned at an external venue, we would also do some games and other activities on days like these. Moments and celebrations like these we look forward to in our work places and they are so important to break free from the daily mundane jobs. We spend so much of our time at our work place, sometimes more than what we spend at home and hence it is so important that our work place is lively and we feel good about being there. These types of celebrations make it special.
