En los últimos días Clara habia conocido a un hombre llamado Diego, ella era sumamente directa y no le gustaba que intentarán jugar con ella. A pesar de pasar gran parte de su tiempo en la granja de su familia siempre pensó que ella debía ser más que una mujer casada con una familia a la cual dedicarle el resto de su vida y esto no lo veían con buenos ojos sus familiares cercanos.

Entre murmullos y miradas incómodas Clara sabía que su familia había preparado todo para que pudiera casarse con este buen hombre que mostraba un aparente interés en ella, a pesar de que le parecía simpático no terminaba por gustarle la idea de casarse, sentía que era una forma de oprimir sus ideales y de asumir un compromiso para lo cual creía que nunca estaría preparada.

Era tanta la insistencia de su familia que Clara comenzaba a sentirse mal físicamente, de un día para el otro ya no quería ser parte de ese bochornoso desenlace, así que tuvo una idea un tanto extraña pero que la ayudaría a librarse de este insistente hombre. Se dedicó por días a investigar todo sobre él y lo que más la sorprendió fue el hecho de que había estado casado con otras tres mujeres que terminaron su vida de forma trágica, en ese momento supo que el tal Diego era más que un hombre jovial y simpático.

Clara cambio por un par de monedas información sobre Diego pero todos concidian con la misma imagen que mostraba él ante la familia de ella. Un día algo muy extraño paso, Diego la invitó a su casa para que conociera el que sería su nuevo hogar y ella algo incomoda tuvo que aceptar por qué sería extraño comportarse de manera nerviosa y que él se diera cuenta de que ella sabía mucho más de lo que debería.

La casa de Diego era casi una mansión en esos tiempos, había un gran jardín lleno de pasto muy bien cortado, árboles por todos lados y el lugar realmente era el sueño de cualquier joven de la edad de Clara. Diego la invitó a pasar a su hogar y le fue mostrando cada rincón del lugar que se encontraba repleto de muebles, una amplia cocina, varios dormitorios y además contaba con una única empleada llamada Daisy. Tener un solo empleado para un lugar tan grande no parecía algo que fuera normal, pero aún así Clara decidio seguirle la corriente a Diego, no sin antes notar el rostro de Daisy quien tenía un semblante de una persona que está fuera de la realidad o así lo notó Clara.

En medio de la conversación que sostenía con Diego, él se disculpo y le dijo que tenía que atender una llamada de negocios dejándola sola en la sala de estar. Clara aprovecho el momento para observar cada detalle y que no se le escapara nada de lo que estaba viendo. En seguida se escuchó un estruendo que venía de la cocina, Clara sin más camino hacia allá y encontró a Daisy con el delantal lleno de sangre y el piso mojado debido a un liquido que parecía ser agua, pero fue todo lo contrario a lo que podía imaginarse.

Daisy le pidió ayuda, mientras entre palabras le contaba que estaba embarazada y que estaba a punto de dar a luz pero que Diego no se debía enterar. Clara sintió que debía ayudar a esta mujer y la llevó a una de las habitaciones, en medio del silencio Daisy dió a luz a una niña de cabellos rizados y piel clara, esto extraño a Clara ya que Daisy era de piel morena y tenía otras características físicas pero pensó de inmediato que tal vez el padre era un hombre de tez blanca.

Luego de dar a luz Daisy le suplicó a Clara que no le contará a nadie lo que acababa de pasar y mucho menos a Diego porque sino cosas muy malas podrían ocurrir. Clara no entendía nada de lo que pasaba y trato de sacarle más información a Daisy, entre respiraciones agitadas le contó que hubo un tiempo en el que ella y Diego tuvieron un romance pero que él no quería que nadie se enterara porque ella no era de su misma clase social, que tuvieron relaciones y así fue como concibió a esa pequeña bebé.

Clara tenía ahora muchas más preguntas pero trato de mantener la calma y le sugirió a Daisy que fuera a una casa vieja y abandonada que había en el pueblo para que pudiera estar tranquila tanto ella como su bebé. La ayudó a que recogiera algunas cosas, solo las necesarias para no alarmar y llamar la atención de Diego. La mujer huyo con su pequeña y Clara se quedó limpiando y ordenando la habitación. Cuando salió a la sala Diego estaba hablando por el teléfono de la casa, dijo algunas palabras y luego volvió toda su atención hacia Clara, ella trato de mantener la calma y que no notara lo asustada que estaba.

¿Que tal el paseo por nuestra casa, te parece un buen lugar o debería de hacer una remodelación? —Le pregunto Diego de la forma más amable y viéndose como un hombre que no tendría ningún tipo de pasado o aventura como la que ella acababa de escuchar.

Está bien, lo que te guste a ti también me parecerá perfecto —Respondio Clara de manera amable pero con los nervios a flor de piel.

¿Sabes dónde está Daisy? La estaba buscando pero no está por ningún lugar.

Me comentó que debía hacer unas compras para la casa y que tal vez se demoraría un poco ya que el tiempo está lluvioso.

Ay, siempre es lo mismo con Daisy, algunas veces pienso que tuvo tanta suerte de que le diera trabajo, es solo una pobre mujer que no tiene nada que sea importante.

Es agradable, tal vez deberías de tomar en cuenta que se esfuerza mucho siendo tu única empleada. —Menciono Clara, arrepintiendose de ser tan obvia con sus últimas palabras.

Bueno, ya sabes cómo son esa clase de personas, nacieron para ser ayudantes, algunas veces siento lástima pero así es la vida, unos nacemos con oro y otros simplemente trabajan toda su vida para subsistir.

Clara se quedó callada durante demasiado tiempo lo que hizo que Diego la mirara y soltara una carcajada, ella solo le sonrió para seguirle la corriente.

Tal vez debería buscar a Daisy, creo que ir a comprar le está tomando demasiado tiempo. ¿Me acompañas?

Se levantó del sofá y la tomó de una manera tan fuerte que casi se tambalea, le dió un beso en la mejilla y le dijo que en los próximos meses no tendría que preocuparse ni por Daisy o cualquier otro empleado porque se irían a vivir a un lugar mejor. Esto solo lleno de miedo e intriga a Clara, preguntándose hasta donde sería capaz este hombre de mentir y de ponerse la careta de hombre audaz y caballeroso.

Between murmurs and uncomfortable looks Clara knew that her family had prepared everything so that she could marry this good man who showed an apparent interest in her, although she found him nice, she did not like the idea of getting married, she felt that it was a way to oppress her ideals and to assume a commitment for which she believed that she would never be prepared.

The insistence of her family was so much that Clara began to feel physically ill, from one day to the other she did not want to be part of this embarrassing outcome, so she had a strange idea but it would help her to get rid of this insistent man. She spent days researching everything about him and what surprised her the most was the fact that he had been married to three other women who ended their lives tragically, at that moment she knew that Diego was more than a jovial and nice man.

Clara exchanged information about Diego for a couple of coins, but everyone agreed with the same image he showed to her family. One day something very strange happened, Diego invited her to his house to get to know what would be her new home and she was a little uncomfortable and had to accept because it would be strange to behave in a nervous way and for him to realize that she knew much more than she should.

Diego's house was almost a mansion in those days, there was a big garden full of nicely cut grass, trees everywhere and the place was really the dream of any young girl Clara's age. Diego invited her into his home and showed her every corner of the place that was full of furniture, a large kitchen, several bedrooms and also had a single employee named Daisy. Having only one employee for such a big place didn't seem normal, but Clara decided to follow Diego's lead, but not before noticing Daisy's face, who had the look of a person out of reality, or so Clara noticed.

In the middle of her conversation with Diego, he excused himself and told her that he had to attend a business call, leaving her alone in the living room. Clara took advantage of the moment to observe every detail so that nothing of what she was seeing would escape her attention. Clara walked there and found Daisy with her apron full of blood and the floor wet due to a liquid that seemed to be water, but it was the opposite of what she could imagine.

Daisy asked her for help, while between words she told her that she was pregnant and was about to give birth but that Diego should not find out. Clara felt that she had to help this woman and took her to one of the rooms, in the middle of the silence Daisy gave birth to a girl with curly hair and light skin, this was strange to Clara since Daisy was brown skinned and had other physical characteristics but she immediately thought that maybe the father was a man with a white complexion.

After giving birth, Daisy begged Clara not to tell anyone what had just happened, especially not Diego, because otherwise very bad things could happen. Clara did not understand anything of what was going on and tried to get more information from Daisy, between shaky breaths she told her that there was a time when she and Diego had an affair but he did not want anyone to know because she was not of the same social class, that they had relations and that was how she conceived that little baby.

Clara now had many more questions but she tried to stay calm and suggested to Daisy that she go to an old abandoned house in town so that she and her baby could be calm. He helped her gather a few things, just enough so as not to alarm and attract Diego's attention. The woman fled with her little girl and Clara stayed behind cleaning and tidying the room. When she went out to the living room, Diego was talking on the house phone, he said a few words and then turned all his attention to Clara, she tried to keep calm and not to let him notice how scared she was.

How was the tour of our house, do you think it's a good place or should I do some remodeling? -Diego asked her in the nicest way and looking like a man who would not have any kind of past or adventure like the one she had just heard.

She told me that she had to do some shopping for the house and that she might be a little late since the weather is rainy.

Oh, it's always the same with Daisy, sometimes I think she's so lucky I gave her a job, she's just a poor woman who has nothing that's important.

She's nice, maybe you should take into account that she works very hard being your only employee. -Clara mentioned, regretting being so obvious with her last words.

Well, you know how those kind of people are, they were born to be helpers, sometimes I feel sorry for them but that's life, some of us are born with gold and others just work all their lives to survive.

Clara was silent for too long which made Diego look at her and let out a laugh, she just smiled at him to play along.

Maybe I should look for Daisy, I think shopping is taking too much of her time, will you join me?

He got up from the sofa and grabbed her in such a strong way that she almost staggered, gave her a kiss on the cheek and told her that in the next few months she would not have to worry about Daisy or any other employee because they would go to live in a better place. This only filled Clara with fear and intrigue, wondering how far this man would be able to lie and put on the mask of a bold and chivalrous man.
