CancelKelloggs - What next for Big Food?

In case you missed it, there is a big trend for people to cancel Kelloggs after they were approached by concerned consumer groups for using poisonous ingredients in their foods. Particularly food dyes and colorings that are banned in manyy countries but they refuse to remove them, despite consumer groups requesting this.

There was some protests outside their headquarters to deliver a petition by Vani Hari, they refused to come out and talk to them and told them through the window to get off their lawn.

This was taken as a big insult and the Cancel Kelloggs movement gained more traction. What is really weird is, similar to Jaguar, this type of publicity isn't good for Kelloggs, so for me it is bizarre that they don't want to make their foods more healthy, especially considering it is eaten by millions of kids around the world.

This is not just a sign of Kellogs filling their foods with cheaper more toxic ingredients. It seems to be a trend for many big food corporations happily switching ingredients and poisoning everyone.

Some noticeable switches have been tallow for cooking fries. The massive increase in soya and vegetable oils in all foods. Plus toxic and addictive sweateners like fructose corn syrup.

When going to the shops, I think, oh I might want that but then check the ingredients label and it has either some corn syrup or canola oil. Both ingredients I don't want to consume. It seems to be a trend for all highly processed foods which make most things unedable if you want to stay healthy.

Even when I am eating a salad or ordering a salad if I am eating out, it has got seed oils in the sauces or the humus, there is no getting away from these now staple ingredients. With RFK Jr now coming to the US as a health Czar, will anything start to change, at least in the US?

My Budda Bowl

It seems there is more worry about using paper straws and less plastic rather than a focus on having high quality food ingredients. With this in mind, I will do my best to join in the cancelKelloggs and generally all big food businesses if I can and buy mostly raw ingredients.

Will it make a difference? Probably not, but you never know. I hope mainly that it will keep me with better health.

To avoid seed oils, a healthy friend of mine recommended Avocado oil which although I try to avoid using any oil as it is nice to not have greasy food, it sometimes is necessary.

So far I have found it pretty good and not affected the taste for me. The alternatives are using olive oil which someone told me was bad as it is not meant for using when heated, so I stopped doing that.

What do you think? Will you cancel Kelloggs? Why are Big Food companies poisoning us?

Thanks for reading.

I think companies like Kellogs and Neslé and many more are deliberately making products that are not healthy for people. Sugar is one of the biggest killers. Obesity is a huge problem and these companies are supporting this with their products that are loaded with sugars.
It's a shame that people need to read the labels on the back of product while the pictures on the front often show heatlhy things, bad claims or attractive figures for kids.

I think customers need to be helped. Laws need to be created to limit freedom of these companies to mislead customers and make them fat. In The Netherlands they are introducing the Nutri-score label. Although it isn't perfect, it can give the customer a better view of what is a less healthy choice.
And they are also introducing a sugar tax, but I don't know of the slightly higher price will deter people. I think that is more a money cow for the government.

Personally we are eating more unprocessed foods. Oat flakes instead of cereal. Drink Water and tea instead of soda.
Yes, we do eat sugar, but we do pay attention to what we eat. More people should do that.

Thats a great point. My only concern with a sugar tax is that they will then replace it with even worse ingredients like corn fructose syrup or even worse Aspartame.. Aspartame seems to be in nearly all soft drinks now and is a very toxic poison...far worse than sugar.

The government and companies are in bed together. The government agenda can often even be worse than companies who mostly just want to make profit. Look at the FDA for example.

I think your strategy makes sense, avoid processed foods altogether and then they will lose money and stop producing them. I think its an effect of centralisation of everything and lack of small businesses that are usually more moral than big ones.

And another thing is that these diet sodas have less sugar, but you often do get heavier. This is because the sweet taste of aspartam (or other sugar replacement) gives the brain a sign that there is sugar on its way, which isn't the case, but triggers hormones like insulin. That could result that you get hungry.

Yes, but I do think a lot of people need to be helped. I think it was the documentary I mentioned in my other reply (but it could also be another documentary) where a mom changed the breakfast for her obese kid. She replaced the coke for a large glass of orange juice and was surprised that it didn't help. Oranges are healhy aren't they?
It starts with education.
In most school canteens it's easier to get snacks and junk food than a salad.
I heard that in Sweden they have meals supported by the government and also lessons about food, nutricians and cooking.

I read or watch some documentaries about the cereal problem. Not sure if there is cancel movement toward Kellogs, but I think they succeeded in making a good brand toward the people in the third world country, since they label themselves as "good with the claim" thus making new parents give their child this food instead of the real one.

Yes, Kelloggs are basically an evil corporation posioning kids but advertising themselves as healthy.

Olive oil is generally fine for cooking. I believe lighter olive oil is better for higher temperature cooking. As with any oil you cook with, you have to watch the smoke point but if you are cooking on medium to medium-high heat, it's generally going to be ok.

Thats good to know. I heard just that it is bad for you but maybe it isnt so bad if the smoke point is higher.

I'm more of a general mills guy myself. I live just about two hours from the cereal capitol of the US. Avocado oil is good stuff. I think you can hear olive oil it just can't take extreme temps like over 400 degrees.

Hard to think you are so close to the cereal capital. Probably back in the day it was fine. Its all the chemical enhancements now that have made them not so healthy.

I still eat cereal pretty much every morning for breakfast. I've started to switch to oatmeal some days. Battle Creek, MI is just about two hours away. There is a really nice casino there called Firekeepers.

Lucky me there is no kellogs cereal in our house.

While I understand the cause and am concerned about what coroporations are doing to our food to increase their margin, I cannot help but notice that Vani Hari is putting on a "big show".

Notice at 1:02 in the video how easily she carries the boxes only one hand supporting the weight:

While one sheet of paper isn't weighing much, these boxes filled with paper could not be carried with only one hand supporting the weight.

Agree, but aren't the boxes more symbolic?

Fruit loop sales down 52% last 12 weeks. Why would they fight such bad publicity? They aren't Ryanair!?

Ha, didn't even consider that since it was never mentioned. Kind of strange how easy it is to not think along when "watching a video". It's like the difference between a book and a movie with the same story. Movies make me lazy, books make me think.

Back on topic: WOW, 52% down. Corporations just sit it out, I guess. In the early days a shit storm could move large companies pretty fast and pretty easily.

Now they all look at Elon and what he did with/to twitter and think "ah, this too shall pass" and sit it out.

There seems to be a trend for companies to finally move away from high fructose corn syrup—well, at least in their more expensive "healthy" versions—but I am really shocked by how almost everything uses canola oil, even so called healthy versions.

About all I expect from RFK is probably trying to make vaccines more optional—a reflection of his extreme anti-vaxx beliefs. I think that will be more harmful than any attempt by him to get better ingredients in US products.

I didnt see that trend yet, I only saw the trend towards Aspartame which is 200 times sweeter and this is why foods in the US and now Europe getting "sweeter".

It will be interesting with RFK, if he will establish anything. I know before covid he was pro choice and not an anti vaxxer. I guess the mainstream pushback could have moved him since I last checked. Apparently there are no safety studies for most vaccines which is the issue why he is protesting them.

I have nothing against improving vaccines. That would be great to make them even safer. But I do worry that by appealing to the anti-vaxx crowd, that is moving in a very dangerous direction. Measles is already making a big comeback. What's next—large numbers of people getting polio and being trapped in iron lungs again? Despite the risks, vaccines are a huge net positive, and any pandering to the anti-vaxxers is playing with fire.

Isn't there now another chemical that is even sweeter than aspartame? Aspartame has been pretty common in the US since the 80s. Diet sodas were one of the first to embrace it. Even after the studies linking it to cancer came out, usage of it just increased. Unfortunately it's the same in Japan. I don't drink soda so I'm safe there, but it shows up in an alarming number of traditional sweets.

I think you dont have to worry about RFK moving toward Anti Vaxxers, Big Pharma and Big Government go hand in hand. They arent going to dismantle their own operations.

I didnt hear about anything sweeter than asparatame, but I think sugar was not so bad compared to all these chemicals. We can see everyone getting fat due to frankenfoods compared to what our parents ate.

For some time I have been seeing information about cereals and their effects on children's health which leads me to think that many parents are not aware of this situation. In my case I stopped consuming them a long time ago and I am looking for healthier food options as I see in your post, really interesting, greetings!

Yeah, we have a lot of trust in these giant big food companies and they are anything but trustworthy. It makes sense to avoid these cereals I think.
