Woman of the Hour, a disturbing true crime

True crime has always been interesting because in these we can get an idea of how terrible events unfolded, some worse than others, and although in the movies we do not see 100% how everything happened in real life, we can realize that evil is loose everywhere and in different ways. It is terrifying to know that even your friendly neighbor could be a potential psychopath, and the human mind is complex and can take deviations harmful to others even without you realizing it.

“Woman of the hour” is a movie that we can watch on Netflix, it was recently released and has the particularity that it is inspired by real events. It is directed by and stars Anna Kendrick, an actress I like a lot for her cute expressions; also starring Daniel Zovatto and Autumn Best.

In “Woman of the hour”, we move to California in the 70's, times in which film productions and the industry related to television is going through a good time and in that sense many aspiring actresses and actors try to play to get a role and to work. In that same dynamic, a girl looking for a good role that will help her to support herself financially, gets a part in a TV dating game show. At first glance, it doesn't seem very attractive to her, but the bills have to be paid, so she decides to participate.

Everything becomes very uncomfortable for her since it is an area for which she was not prepared, but she faces the challenge with full commitment. However, things start to get a little dark as one of the three candidates for a date turns out to be strange, suspicious and with questionable intentions. In some flashbacks of the film, it is confirmed that this is indeed a guy who has murdered several women by manipulating them with taking pictures of them. This guy has been doing the same thing for a long time, but he has never been suspected of any of these crimes.

Considering that the film is inspired by real events and that it was a media case, it loses a little of the element of surprise that the viewer can receive, so it loses some rhythm and is predictable in large sections of the film, however, I think it perfectly fulfills the purpose of this type of film which is to represent as graphically as possible a certain event, so the loss of the element of surprise is understandable.

What this film does handle quite well is suspense, the dangerous aura of the killer is very well represented by Daniel Zovatto who made us feel uncomfortable with his appearance, with his look and with the twisted intentions of a cold and calculating murderer. Another aspect that caught my attention is the lack of interest of the authorities in solving this type of crimes, I guess they were common or that there was not enough personnel to meet the demand.

If you're looking for a movie to pass the time, this one will do the trick. It is not the most impressive of them all, but it fulfills the role of entertaining and even more so considering that we are talking about real events. The performances are very well represented and the suspense becomes quite disturbing from the point of view that we realize that there are killers out there who do their thing frequently and evade the authorities with some ease, in the world there are many twisted people and there is no ability to control them all.
