Preparing Ridges for planting of Cucumber
Hello everyone, trust y'all are doing great. Welcome to my blog !
We were instructed to plant cucumbers while doing an agricultural internship as undergraduates. Each of us received a piece of land to work on, which was divided among the several departments within the faculty of agriculture. However, having a ridge was a must for everyone (those departments include agricultural economics, animal science, soil science, and crop science).
Everybody gets one ridge, that is. We were told to get our ridge ready for the cucumber planting; from clearing the bush to creating the ridge. Each person's measurements were taken using a tape measure.
I first made sure I had a proper planting area before starting to plant cucumbers on ridges. Each of us was given a space with lots of sunlight, wind protection, and proper drainage.
The region has been cleared of weeds and other vegetation that would pose a threat to the cucumbers' resource dominance.
I next set out to clear the bushy area I had been allocated so it would be suitable for planting. I pulled out the weeds with my hoe and cutlass.
Next, I used a shovel to make the ridges where I would like to put the cucumber seeds. I made sure my ridge was tall enough to allow for proper drainage and wide enough to allow for sufficient plant spacing. In order to ensure that the cucumber plants receive an equal supply of water and nutrients, I also made sure the ridges were straight and level.
After finishing my ridge preparation, I focused on the soil. Prior to planting the cucumbers on the ridge, we took measurements of their spacing. We spaced our plants and manure 5 cm apart, and then we marked the location with sticks so we knew where to put the plants and manure.
After that, I started adding organic materials into the soil, such as old manure or compost. This contributes to better drainage, nutritional provision, and simpler handling of the soil. I then give the cucumber plants a head start by adding a slow-release fertilizer, like bone or blood meal.
This is me after a successful farm work.
Tools that i used:
Hoe, Shovel and cutlass.
My fellow coursemates were also present in this activity too, we really had a good time.
And that was all i did to prepare for the planting of my cucumber seed.
