The Old Days
It was in my highschool days that I could tell our small village in the Philippines was not exposed to technology yet. Of course, television was present already but only a few houses had it. Most of the houses had a radio with a portable battery. It has only a battery since electricity those days was expensive to own.
Most people used a kerosene lamp with a kerosene to light the respective houses. That kind of lamp where the ignition was a piece of clothing to create a fire. Obviously, the outside was dark. Street lights back then were nowhere to be found, perhaps it was too costly to lighten up the whole village. Even so, many people gathered outside, the adults, the teenagers and the children. Adults were just having conversation while teenagers and children were playing outside. Especially when outside was too bright because of the big beautiful moon.
Compared to the noise from yesteryears to now, maybe today is noisier. The nonstop vehicles that pass, the loud sound of technology and of course the growing population. It’s true and it’s not bad because it makes a place livelier. It’s just that, even though the days were quieter long ago it was not annoying. The noises were created with true people from the joy of their hearts. You could hear laughter and shouting from having a quality time.
The conversations from the neighborhood to strengthen the bonds; The laughter by everyone to make sure no was left behind. I personally assumed that depression pushes someone to suicide didn’t exist those days. It’s pretty obvious there was someone to talk to, to listen and to comfort if someone felt down. We neglected the negative effects of gadgets, in fact, one of them is teaching us to be content with just being alone. So in times of needing someone, it’s hard to see one.
I just miss the old days because when I woke up and went outside. There was no one to be found. Even though the population gets higher and should be crowded outside. Why it’s hard to find people to have a random conversation to pause the time of thinking worries. It becomes so lonelier as days pass by, some hurriedly go to work and others just stay at home because of gadgets or social media.
It’s too sad not to see the beauty of surroundings and humankind these days. However, we can not stop time and evolution. It’s agonizing but it doesn’t mean we stop finding what makes us happy. Just like the flow of life, when someone leaves, there is someone who comes.
