Big Sister, Thank You

DSC_0760.jpg

Hello, my dear sister. It has been a while already since we tasted the cooking oil and soy sauce mixed into the rice. I was too young back then that I didn’t witness how you cried when a store refused to give you those types of viand because it was a credit one. We can laugh at it now but if we look back long ago, I’m sure we were so pathetic back then that we can't hold in our tears. Imagine even buying goods in the store for only a 1 peso coin was hard to afford. Time really changes together with the status when we’d do something for it.

Hello again, thank you for the sacrifices and hard work you did for us. When my older sisters and big brothers went to school. You were in another country to support them, of course I was no exception. Thanks to you we have papers that can be posted on the wall about the Degree we finished. However, you, sorry but we can only place your big and wide single picture at the wall. There’s no papers that we can give to you even though you were responsible for them all.

All I can say is sorry for the past few years, maybe 3 decades already since you enjoyed the feeling of being home. Even now, I’m still wondering how painful it was for you when you were being selfish when our father passed away. I could tell how desperate you were from the tone of your agony when you called back then. You wanted to go home but you decided not to. You prioritized sending money which could help father to be sent smoothly in his resting place. I adored you for being brave in fighting the emotions within because if it’s me, I’d die from sadness.

There are no words enough to say how thankful I am to you, always and forever. Please stop that thought of yours being responsible to us, your younger siblings . We can stand by our own and thanks to you. You’ve done enough, maybe it’s time for you to think of yourself right now. You can go home and try to live a simple life in the country you were raised in. The Philippines is quite hard but it will be okay since there are us. You can look forward to depending on when you need something. It will not be much but maybe at least, there is a little you can expect.

We owe you everything since you became our 2nd parent because Father and Mother could not handle us all in the depth of poverty. So yeah, maybe this time it’s us to repay everything you gave to us. Just wait a little longer, I’m doing my best to be a capable person of giving you an answer when you ask questions. Not right away and might not be specific but of course I will never turn my back at you.

Maybe some are sugar-coated words but believe me when I said how thankful I am to you and will ever be indebted to you. Thank you for being a good big sister to me and to us. No, thank you, Nang.

Thank you for reading
