An average number of 62 refugees or more, including children, have lost their lives following the capsize of a boat on its way to Italy in the city of Crotone, precisely the southern part of Calabria.

According to reports, it was gathered that the boat sank on Sunday, particularly near Steccato di Cutro, which is a sea resort in the southern part of Calabria. Adding to this, the passengers were made up of people from diverse areas, including those from Afghanistan, Iran, and many more, as the boat sailed off from Turkey.

Eighty-one people survived, with 20 hospitalized, including one in intensive care, Manuela Curra, a provincial government official, told Reuters news agency. One survivor was arrested on migrant trafficking charges, the Guardia di Finanza customs police said source

Talking about the pressing factor that ignited the forcible departure of the refugees after their boat capsized, it's well to mean to talk more about the reasons for their departure, and it's of note and evident enough that hardship has been the main causal factor as they look for a greener pasture. In Afghanistan, it has been on record that there has been a consistent adverse weather condition, which has explored more about their source of sustainability, which is agricultural practice.

To add more to the incident that claimed the lives of so many dozens like this, it was called to notice that up to 140 to 150 people boarded the boat and had been on this journey for up to 4 to 5 days before the capsize came. Though identifying the nationalities of those dead, it was found out that most of them are from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Somalia, where the means of livelihood are denied them following the present adverse weather conditions.

Far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was elected last September partly on a promise to stem the flow of refugees reaching Italian shores. In a statement on Sunday, she expressed her “deep sorrow” over the incident and “the many human lives cut short by human traffickers”.Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said in a separate statement that the incident was “a huge tragedy which shows the absolute need to act firmly against irregular migration channels.source

This being so pathetic and disheartening to hear at such a time like this, there are more implications to this as the refugees didn't take the right route of escape in the sense that they didn't follow the due processes of immigration standards and applications. They wanted to go for a fast and inappropriate move, but it backfired on them, as not just dozens died but also those saved would have to face the penalty of an immigration law bypass.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on her statement said she is deeply saddened on this news but then has vowed to double the asylum and immigration action Plan on the Central Mediterranean which is of great importance on maintaining the migration of citizens tro and fro the country.
