Gemini Man 2019 Movie (contains spoilers!)
Image Source
Gemini Man was released in Nigeria on the 11th of October 2019. It is an action thriller with a 1 hour, 57 minutes runtime. The movie was directed by Ang Lee, the Taiwanese filmmaker who won an Academy Award for directing the amazing movie titled "The Life of Pi". Starring Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen, and Benedict Wong, Gemini Man had my attention captured and locked down from the very first scene. Will Smith was Henry Brogan, an elite 51-year-old government agent/assassin and a master at individual profiling. He was the best operative the government had but after his 72nd successful kill, he was disillusioned and wanted out.
I fully intended to write this review without many spoilers but I doubt that's possible. I apologize in advance to movie lovers who detest spoilers. You can stop reading right now if that would help. Now, where was I? Aha! Henry Brogan wanted out and so he retired hoping to live a peaceful life. His plans were however thrown off-kilter when he connected with an old friend and found out that his last mark/target had been an innocent man and not the terrorist he was made to believe. His new-found knowledge immediately made him an unacceptable threat to his former agency and government operatives were sent to eliminate him. He made short work of killing them all with the aid of his new friend, Dani Zakarweski (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), who got caught in the drama and crossfire when she was assigned as Henry's surveillance DIA agent.
When the operatives failed to kill him, a single mysterious operative was sent to eliminate Henry and then things got really interesting. For the first time, there was an assassin who appeared faster and more ferocious than Henry. To his shock, the young man was his spitting image and seemed able to predict his every move. After an exhilaratingly crazy bike chase that would have you gripping the edge of your seat, the young assassin almost succeeded in killing Henry but was forced to retreat when local authorities showed up on the scene. Henry soon realized that the man who's trying to kill him is his younger, faster, cloned version! Think about it people; how would a 51-year-old man fight and defeat a more agile and almost telepathic replica of himself? I would say, "With the wisdom of hindsight and wealth of experience".
Enough with the spoilers yeah? I agree! Go watch the movie, it would impress you and in fact, from my own viewpoint, it should have a 90% google rating. It currently has an 82% google rating but I believe this is a function of the critics' reviews which sound like a load of hogwash to me;
In Will Smith's latest muddled misfire, it's like the Fresh Prince versus the Stale King - Reed Tucker, New York Post
This sluggish, dull, special effects-driven actioner fails twice: In engaging with an intellectual discussion of clones and in its attempt to find strong emotional ground on the same subject. - Jeffrey M. Anderson, Common Sense Media
Will Smith's Gemini Man, a sci-fi action thriller, is designed as a 90's potboiler that's dead-on-arrival in this high frame rate mess. - Sify Movies
Such harsh reviews for such a good movie! If you haven't seen it yet, please go see it with an open mind and share your opinion with me. I watched it and loved it. I got the most honest feedback about the movie while watching in the cinema with at least a hundred other people who clapped, yelled and laughed out loud almost throughout the 2-hour runtime. As a matter of fact, with his dual performance in Gemini Man, I expect Will Smith to once again be nominated for an Academy Award and hopefully he'll win this time.
