How to make Good use of any poorly harvested Grains.
Nature has it that no matter the amount of rainfall and total care we give to our farms some seeds at harvest time will never be properly ripe. If for instance you uproot a groundnut plant, you will notice under it that at most 80% of the seeds are ripe and strong while the rest will never be good enough at harvest.
Take a look at some of the ripe and unripe seeds here.
The harvested groundnut plants, but upon closer look I have marked out some of the seeds that are not fully matured below
No matter the amount of time you give to these unripe ones, delaying harvest, they will never get ripe. Such is nature I guess.
Groundnuts harvest hence commences not when all the grains are 100% ripe but when we have a significant number of quality and ripe grains underneath.
Some of the groundnut bunches have numerous seeds while some have very few to none it is a common sight.
It is usually difficult to sort this seeds at harvest. Separating the poor and healthy grains, hence we harvest them together.
But after harvest and a good drying method of preservation, we sort them out when we want to use them.
There are many functional use for groundnut, and if you want to use it for making groundnut oil you can chose to pick out the poor seeds which will contain little to no oil.
And while preparing the dried groundnuts grains to be used for direct consumption, any products or brand that sells groundnuts with poor seeds will not have good markets. Hence a selection is done to remove all the poor side which may have bad taste before bottling groundnuts for sale.
What then do we use the poor seeds for.
- Cooking
- Animal feeds
The poor seeds is what we often used to make our groundnut soup.
You can use the good seeds as well but in cases where we want the good seeds for other functions we keep them and use the poorly develop ones to make soup.
For animal feeds especially poultry.
Groundnuts is mixed with soya beans and other grains to make their feeds. Poultry birds also also needs protein in their meals, hence this is a quality use for our groundnut which the birds do not have a choice of taste.
Mixing it with soya beans will enhance the taste Peradventure the seed have any poor taste.
Groundnut is one plant with multiple usage. The debris from harvest is dried up and used for animal feed as well. We often man a heap of it and keep them away from rain or getting rotten, this is used to feed our goats and neighbors cows during the dry seasons when pastures are scarce. Basically nothing is a waste when you grow groundnuts.
That is one of my favorite 😋
Really, I am happy to know that ❤
Using the unmature seeds for soup means none of the groundnut seeds will be a waist
Exactly dear.
