Story time: Chance meetings - Two truths and a Lie

Living in the small city of Amsterdam, it is easy to bump into a local celebrity at any time and any place. It's a bit different here compared to the United States as celebrities can go about their business without screaming fans and the obligation to sign autographs. I am sure celebrities like their privacy but still enjoy being recognized occasionally. I am most certainly not a celebrity watcher, but sometimes I meet celebrities when I least expect it.

It was a hot summer’s day when I went with my children and their visiting friends for ice cream. We went to Venetie Ijs - an “old fashioned Italian parlor”. It’s the place to go for the ultimate gelato experience. Whilst approaching the parlor – we wondered what was happening as there was a crowd outside which stretched to the neighboring store. You will not believe; it was simply people waiting their turn. We saw a few neighbors and many cars badly parked whilst their drivers waited to buy this delicious frozen treat. We were not in a hurry, so we sat on the terrace watching and waiting instead of standing in line. Soon we could stand inside the parlor but we still needed to be patient- the parlor was full with people.

Almost immediately, I notice that my son was smiling. I was not sure why he was smiling at me, but I thought he was just being mischievous. When I saw my children whispering with their friends, I realized the smiles were not for me. They were staring and smiling at the man beside me. He smiled back at them, then at me. I smiled back. I looked around and indeed it was clear that many people recognized this man. All seemed to be looking in his direction. I was not sure who he was. The man purchased his ice-cream and left. No one spoke to him – there were only smiles. My aspiring footballer son eagerly told me that it was Virgil van Dijk – the $80 million defender. It was great that no one bothered him. He could buy his ice cream in peace and depart.

Things were a bit different many moons ago when I lived in New York City. I was on a local train traveling home from the beautifully green Westchester County. I boarded the train in Katonah and sat at the first set of seats by the door. I slid over to the window to enjoy the green trees that shimmered in the sunlight as the train passed by. At the next stop, Bedford Hills, a tall handsome man came on the train. He smiled and nodded in a polite manner as he sat right across from me. It was nice to see that chivalry still existed. I smiled back acknowledging his greeting. The man was dressed casually – jeans and a T-shirt. I thought that I recognized him but was not sure. I looked at him quizzically trying to figure out where I could have met him. He caught me staring and smiled again. I smiled back but immediately looked out the window as I felt somewhat self-conscious. As the train approached the next stop, I decided that I would ask him whether we had met before because he looked familiar. After all he was also looking at me as well. In that moment, the train doors opened and a group of teenagers stepped in. They immediately screamed out,
“Superman!!!”
The teenagers could not linger too long as the jarring motion of the train forced them to take seats.

Oh, my goodness. It was indeed Superman - Christopher Reeve. I looked at him with somewhat startled and embarrassed eyes. Of course, I knew him but only from the “silver screens”. My thoughts must have shown on my face. He smiled again – I smiled back. Soon he was rising as we approached the next stop. He said goodbye. The teenaged fans did not miss this opportunity, and almost in unison they said,
“Goodbye Superman, we love you Superman!!”
He waved and alighted the train. I was happy that I didn’t get a chance to ask him whether we knew each other. I found my own thoughts totally hilarious. However, I felt that had we spoken he would have thought it was funny. We could have had a good laugh at my question. He seemed so kind.

There were no smiles when I met Alec Baldwin. I was young and working part time at a well-known men’s store called A.T. Harris Formalwear Ltd. It was in existence since 1892. It was famous for outfitting presidents, kings and many rich and famous people. The small store was located in mid-town Manhattan but many made the trip to get measured and outfitted in the store. Some immortalize their visits by sending an autographed photo or letter afterwards which told of their visit and experience. These memorabilia hung proudly on the walls of the store.

Alec Baldwin was premiering “The Hunt for Red October” at the time. He walked into the store with an entourage of bodyguards. They approached me at the front desk and I smiled and said as was customary,
“Good afternoon gentlemen, do you happen to have an appointment?”

It was a standard question to keep order in this proud establishment although no one was ever turned away. Anticipating a yes response, I started to look down towards the appointment book. No one responded so I looked up again. If looks could killed I would not be here to tell this tale. Alec was clearly annoyed – he walked away without saying a word. He went towards the front of the store where the male tailors were waiting to assist. One of the bodyguards reprimanded me by sternly saying,
“Don’t you know who he is?!”
It sounded like a rhetorical question which should’ve scolded me into silence for asking such a trite question.
I answered nevertheless,
“No, I don’t”.
The bodyguard who spoke looked at me horrified. Then he also walked away. The remaining guards stayed by the door. It seemed ridiculous to me that my question and the ensuing reaction cause them to be so upset.

Some minutes later a female colleague heard that Mr. Baldwin was in our midst. She scurried to the front of the store to excitedly dote over him. She was quite giddy as she showered him with adoration. After Alec Baldwin and his entourage departed, I was even chided by her for not knowing him. I told her tongue-in-cheekedly that I would get up to date at some point. Subsequently, I accompanied her to see his famous movie. I enjoyed it despite our interesting meeting. I will never forget him nor our encounter although I do know that everyone can have bad days sometimes.

From my story could you easily tell which 2 scenarios were the truth and which was the lie?
The first story is not true.

Hello @momogrow, Your stories were energetic, and immaculately told, which made it a little tricky to spot the lie, even though it should have been easy considering just how much the Dutch love football.
The true stories are believable. Imagine if Superman had pulled some stunt or popped on a Superman shirt, just how embarrassingly funny it might have been? Hmm, Alec's reaction was believable:)
Thank you so much for getting involved in our creative non-fiction prompt. Authors like you make this so much fun.
We encourage engagement with other authors on their work, as they might in return check your story out.
This one was a fantastic read 🙌

Many thanks for your nice comment. I am glad it was not so easy to figure out. Actually the Dutch are football mad but have a lot of respect for people’s private life. I never see scenes of fans mobbing celebrities here unless there are at events and thus in their roles. By the way, I saw other famous footballers and celebrities at this special ice cream parlor - the same was true.

Oh my goodness - if Superman did some quirky Superman stunt - like revealing a superman shirt - that would have jogged my memory but it would indeed have been embarrassingly funny. It would have been a good laugh but my memory would surely have been tainted. It would then be of an attention loving celebrity but now it is of a nice handsome man that just happened to be famous.

Yes - Alec was interesting. I also watched Bettlejuice thereafter. I do not think he was that famous even then. “Hunt for Red October” made him famous.

I have been reading the stories of the other writers - the response to this prompt are great. Thank you for such an inspiring prompt.

I kinda figured the first wasn't true. Even in Europe I imagine celebrities get swamped with attention, especially a footballer.
I have heard Alec Baldwin isn't easy to get along with so I definitely believed that one.

It's funny how many celebrities my girlfriend has introduced me to at conventions and I just say hi and shake their hand like they are some random person. Most of them I don't know, so to me they are just random people. I think they appreciate my lack of awe, because we usually end up having some pretty cool conversations, much to the chagrin of the lines behind us. 😎

I cannot speak for the rest of Europe but the dutch seem to have an unwritten rule to respect privacy of celebrities - it is sort of their nature - just look on then look away. They are practical like that.

Isn't it great when you do not know these celebrities and can have a great conversation with them. Yes I am sure they appreciate your behavior. It must become dull that people are always trying to impress you. Thanks for dropping by.

An entertaining read. I couldn't tell what the fake story was, it was very hard to tell. I had to reach the final to find out. Meeting celebrities like Mr. Superman and Alec Baldwin must have been a great experience.
Thanks for sharing.
Good day

Aww fantastic - I am glad it was hard to tell. However that ice cream parlor attract many celebrities - but I never met that particular footballer. Yes meeting Superman was special but watching Alec balwin in the store for at least half an hour was interesting.
Thankso much for your comment and for dropping by.

This week is really hard for me 😁 The style of the stories you write is so good that it was very difficult for me to find out which one was a lie. Sometimes it's hard to know how true and how fabricated the stories of celebrities/known characters are about 👏👏

Aww I am happy to hear that you found it difficult to determine the lie. Thank for the compliment on how I wrote the story. The stories I tell are the truth. Even the one that is a lie could have been true if I used a different celebrity. This city is small and luckily - people are very relaxed here.

I could imagine how embarrassing it can be when you have been eye caught, talkless not remembering a celebrity and asking if you have met before....😂

Couldn't possibly imagine what to expect as a reply if you had asked.

Yes it could be a bit embarassing but luckily there are some nice celberities who do not get mad and storm away because they are not recognised. 😀 I think Superman would have been very polite - he would have realised that I genuinely could not place him although I thought I knew him.

I'm still trying to figure out which is the truth and which is a lie though. But then I think superman would have.

I didn't quite believe it, that's why I said what I said. But then it's a great story, I do criticize stories alot, when I try to get into the mind of the writer, so please don't mind me, I'm just being sarcastic.

It is fine - I do not mind if you ask for clarity. I know it sounds unbelievable but it is just the way it was.

🤩O my! I sure have missed your writing Momo. I definitely couldn't tell which was a lie as it all sounded believable [or maybe I was hoping it's all real😁].
I definitely haven't met any of these Celebrities but I do know them via movies, not sure if I'd go fan-crazy but I'd sure have a big smile on my face seeing them too.
Beautifully written Momo, you kept me hooked, wanting know what next, amazing❤️ Keep writing, please don't ever stop😘❤️🤗

Hey there!

Your story was well-written and told with much energy.

What strange encounters, heh?

Thank you for the kind words. The energy came with the chance meetings. Although I must admit that the likelihood was quite high because of the nature of the store - which sadly does not exist anymore. It is also fun to document some of my life stories on my blog.

Wow! really interesting. I'm still looking forward to how I would react if I ever get to meet a well known or even one of my favorite celebrities someday.
I believe it is too easy for you to stumble on Virgil. So, it's certainly true. I will simply have to make a guess from the next two options.
The lie would probably be meeting Alec Baldwin, I think you spent your youthful age in Europe and couldn't have been working in the US same time but of course, I might be wrong :)

I think if you meet a celebrity you will be fine - just be you. Funny I have met a few dutch football player even at that same parlor but not Virgil - not yet. haha I did tell this at the end of the post - meeting Virgil is the lie the other are true. My youthful days was divided over 3 countries not Europe. I studied in the US so it was at that time that I was working at the men's store.

I wouldn't know until I meet and it would also depend on the person. For some, I might not leave without a picture haha.

Oh Lol. Now I can see that I missed that line but happy I did as I probably won't know studied in the US. It's a really good twist, I like such haha. Wow! meeting Virgil should be more realistic, one would think.

Yes - my son as a defender too wants to meet him. It is not too unrealistic.

I am yet to meet any of these celebrities apart from watching them in movies but Guess what. I will be happy to meet one 😊😄🥳

This is a nice story my darling 🥰, you sure know how to make your readers stay glued to their screen while reading from your blog 😂👍❤️...It was nice reading from you today, keep the ball rolling @momogrow
