Random thoughts about words

(Edited)

This post is inspired by a conversation I had with my son during our 2 hour drive to and from his training. I did not know what to blog about but our conversation gave me food for thought.

I will brain dump some of what came to mind.
Three years ago, I wrote a quote called Mind your words

Words are like the wind - its blows can be unkind and overwhelming or refreshing and welcoming. Words are uttered easily but its impact can last a lifetime. Be mindful of your words! MoMoGrOw

Words can heal, hurt, harm, cause pain, help, comfort, love, sooth etc.

Words are powerful and are impactful. Sometimes it takes only 1 word to convey a message or have influence. Sometimes it takes a few words strung together which create one’s thoughts, which can change one’s outlook and/or actions. Words trigger emotional responses – so we need to be mindful of our words. Unfortunately or fortunately the emotional response can totally impact our behaviour, our beliefs and ultimately our lives.
For example: "You are creative", "You are smart!", or "You will never succeed."

Pay attention to the words in your head. The words we tell ourselves are equally as powerful as the ones that others tell us. Just like a garden, we sometimes need to “weed” negative self-talk from our minds because we might be programmed consciously or subconsciously. If negative words prevent the fruits that you desire from bearing, then removing them might take time if they became deeply rooted or are overgrown and preventing positive words from flourishing.

Are we spending time and attention on negative thoughts or using the wrong words? Meditation helps with weeding out negative words - as it gives a new and different perspective.
For example: "I always have bad luck". Then good luck will never come if one is negatively focused.

Harsh words alienate and create distance. Harsh words will never enable connections, empower or show that we empathise, understand or care. We should try to catch our words before we alienate – because often we speak without thinking. It becomes so normal but we can also practice to use positive or uplifting words even when the situation is not favourable.
For example: “You forgot to take out the garbage” feels different from “You did not remember to take out the garbage.”
Or
If a child says, “I am so forgetful as I always leave my book” – the response could be “You remembered otherwise you would never have said it.” 😀

Words create memories. Which messages are you sending and which memories will be created by your words? Consider that.
Do we remember all the nice words said to us or only the unpleasant ones? What are some of those?
Can you think of some unpleasant words you uttered/screamed at someone?
We are not saints, so we will sometimes say mean things and apologise afterwards. Now that you are considering them, how do they make you feel after the fact? Or how do you feel the person screamed at felt?

Words can attack and words can attract. Say something nice to someone today. Consciously determine whether your words will attack someone or attract someone. You are in control. 😀Remember your words will also have a direct impact on you too. I hope you are being attractive.

Words can be sung, spoken, written – they convey emotions as they can and will be felt. Just think of that song or speech that gave you goosebumps.

Words give us a voice to communicate/negotiate, to challenge, to manipulate, to educate or to propagandize.

I wrote this poem called Power of the Pen 3 years ago.

The pen can solve problems between haters,
No words uttered just ink on papers.
Words, agreement - peace - no sorrow,
No violence - no war - no lamenting tomorrow.

The written word is very persuasive. It conveys ideas and records the human experience (stories, events, opinions) of the writer. It serves to connect the reader with the experiences of the writer’s past or present also of those near or far. The experiences connect us with the world and times of the writer.
Truth or propaganda - the written word is often believed and taken as fact.
Can you imagine reading a well written book hundreds of years later and not knowing its true origins? The more eloquent the more factual it will seem.

Bookmarkers created by my youngest daughter - 2017

By the way, we are engaged here on the Hive blockchain in the documentation of the written word for posterity.

Words create thoughts – words in our minds can be instructive or destructive. If instructive then dreams develop. They make us think, act and create - although they never need to be spoken. In this way, thoughts become things. Everything around us started from a thought which were words in someone's mind.

Therefore one could argue that -
our universe/world is indeed created from words.

Now I do not want to sound religious but the Bible does say “In the beginning was the word…..” I wrote this because I figure you might be thinking about these words.

I hope this post provided some food for thought.

Good morning @momogrow and thanks for sharing your thoughts about words. However, this topic would fit better in the Self Improvement community.

We have different communities on Hive and we're encouraging users to post in the right community based on the topic of the post.

OCD is for topics that don't fit in any other community and should be used when you don't find a niche community for your post.

Here's a guide I put together to help you learn about how communities work and why you should use them -> Communities Explained - Newbie Guide.

Once you posted your post in the right community, you can then cross post it to OCD community. Here's a guide about cross posting.

Please don't delete any post with the purpose of reposting it in another community as that can be considered abuse! Leave this post here, you'll get it right next time.

Thanks for pointing out my error - I will ensure that I do not make this mistake again. I thought carefully about my choice of community but did not think of Self improvement although I used it as a tag. Many
apologies.

It is quite astonishing how people fail to understand the power of their own words. Words can basically make or destroy the entire world of a person, even oneself.

There are words we say that really may look or seem insignificant, but really, they can pierce through the soul. It can be applied to any aspect of life, including relationships with spouses, friends, family, and bosses, as well as internal thoughts and written words addressed to potential readers. The list can go on and on.

I believe everyone should be conscious of the effect, consequences, and power of their words. It does more than we think. Simply saying "I cannot be consistent on Hive" does the most in making you actually inconsistent. It is all about the mindset. And what influences this mindset in question? The words we consume are heard and spoken.

One of my personal experiences serves as a good example. You see, Momo, I am a very young chap. I am quite far from having a kid I can drive to and from his training. However, I have had relationships. Many of them ended in shambles.

You must already assume that I must be a bad person then (or maybe not). But really, I am a great person. My only problem was my choice of words sometimes. I do not mean abusive words, but words that seem insignificant but actually mean a lot.

I used words like "Can we talk later? I am busy at the moment with school work. " To me, this was always a simple statement that should not be hard to understand. But in reality, I said more than those words. I had been saying things like, "I do not consider your need for my attention important at the moment, so let us suspend it." in those little words I had said. This made my girlfriend love me less and less by the day. But I did not know. There are better ways that I could have handled such a matter, but the point I am trying to make is the power of words.

Another thing I would like to mention is respect to Hive. On Hive here, people put in a lot of effort to push content every day, even on other social media platforms. So, the choice of words in their work and efforts goes a long way in influencing the decisions they make regarding their efforts in the future.

For example, me leaving a statement like this: "I am so glad that I got to find this wonderful write-up about words." I have now learned and understand how to use my power with words much better. " It sure would go a long way in making you feel appreciated and encouraged to keep doing great.

I know I have said more than I probably should. I get lost in trying to express myself sometimes. Anyways, I believe you get my point. You do get my point, right? And I do mean the statement I used as an example in the previous paragraph.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for you feedback, thoughts and for sharing your personal experience. Young or old life is about continuous learning. That is what is great about it but sometimes the lessons come the hard way. It did based on the example you highlighted but I am sure you learnt from it. That is the good part.

Do not berate yourself too much either because remember words create. You are correct - here on Hive we are continuously creating with our words. We determine how our words will be seen and the impact they will have.

Have a great day as well and thank so much for your comment.

You just pointed out true facts that most people fail to realize. There is power in the tongue so the words we say MUST have an impact on those who heard it.
The inability to control our speech has indeed caused a lot of people to lose treasures that can't be bought with money.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts @momogrow. This is great 👍👍👌

Yes - I hear you our words can cause so much turmoil and also so much joy. They can cause loss, destruction but also gain and creation. We should be cautious because we all have words and often we do not realise how powerful everyone of us are as we can have an impact on everyone around us.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for dropping by.

Thanks for the compliment re. teh poem. My son inspired me but I did not tell exactly what we talked about but it was about words and their impact. He is a footballer and naturally there are times when the feedback is positive and negative. We discussed how the trainer has to manage his words carefully - even when the team is playing badly - to continuously motivate the players .
