My entry to Reflection Hunters Contest: River Reflections

This is my first entry to the Reflection Hunter Contest. The first time I saw it I had to think of the reflections I saw on a river – the charming River Charente in France.

It was in the midst of summer, when we stopped for a few days in a village called Verteuil-sur-Charente. It was small, quaint and had picturesque views by the river. We rented an air-bnb,

which was in the shadows of Château Verteuil by the banks of the river. Our villa was very charming and had thick stones walls, keeping the interiors nice and naturally cool.

Even more pleasing was the river at our doorsteps. In the swelteringly heat, my family and I could cool off under the weeping willows or take a dip in the inviting waters. The ducks would visit us as soon as we sat by the river bank.

Others would pose at a distance - reflecting in the glistening waters.

The castle was very impressive with its numerous towers. The castle certainly dominated as it hovered over the village. It sat imposingly by the riverside but can be seen from any point.

Next to the villa is a 18th century working water mill. We enjoyed freshly-made brioche daily from its bakery with freshly milled wheat on location.

However, for us the river was the main attraction. We could go swimming, canoeing or just relax by its banks to remain cool.

One day we went canoeing. The river was surrounded by many trees. Canoeing was very pleasant as some areas was canopied by trees. It was refreshing while we rowed. At some point we came by the ……castle. The crystal clear waters of the river was the perfect mirror, reflecting the castle by its banks. It was nice to see the castle from this perspective.

Looking ahead from the castle, we could see the watermill and the 12th century Saint-Médard church in the distance.

As we went along the river, the currents shimmered and the trees, awashed with sunlight, were glowing.

If you prefer to go for a walk, there were paths beside the river which can take you through the village. You will pass lovely trees, old bridges, beautiful gardens and stone houses.

We were only in this charming village for a few days but now I have fond memories to "reflect" upon.
