Football training - a special day
The evening was cold but beautiful. The players assembled on the football field in almost a ceremonius manner. My son and other players were selected from around the country, for a series of trainings. It was an honor to be there as these trainings were being conducted by the Dutch Football Association. The players were serious, focused and ready to display their best performance.
As the boys played, the trainers stood at the sidelines shouting guidance to them. Although this happens in most matches, this time it was different. The aim was to see whether players understood the guidance and could incorporate and execute them immediately (if applicable). Most players did great as they eagerly showed off their aptitude.
Despite it being a practice match, it felt like a real match. Each side wanted to win - afterall football is about scoring goals. The match was fast and furious and very competitive. This was to be expected as these were suppose to be some of the best players at this level. As a result, there were some amazing goals, dribbles, headers, sprinting etc. The match was very exciting.
The parents in the bleachers had to resist the urge to cheer/scream for their child or the scoring team. The same was true regarding any potential foul play. Emotions were quitely expressed in order to not interfere with what was happening on the field. This was not a competition.
As the boys played the final minutes of the match the sunset splashed it colours across the skies above. The beauty of the sunset enhanced the setting, mood and I am sure the feeling of the players. They felt special to be selected and afforded this opportunity. All parents applauded with pride when the match ended.
My son was invited a few times thereafter. He appreciated the opportunity and made the most of it. He learnt a lot and the best part was that he had a lot of fun.
The sunset could be a reminder that they are on a journey and irrespective of what happens in the future - each day is special and can end splendidly.
