Mallard Ducks and Canada Geese
These are two birds that I feel are trademarks of Canadian bird life. Near almost any lake, river, or pond, these two birds can be found congregating. They make for great photo subjects, as generally, once they get used to your presence, they won't startle too easily if you don't approach too fast. I like having a long telephoto lens for birds like these; the Nikon 200-500mm gives a great range, and although it is heavy, I have a nice case, which makes it easy to take places. Some of these birds fly south for the winter, but we also seem to have a steady population in the colder months, as I think with the way Calgary gets warming spells from Chinook winds. These Chinooks bring a warm wind from the west, which can last for a few days up to almost a couple of weeks, with temperatures rising from -20 degrees Celsius to sometimes even +10 degrees Celsius and beyond. So often, these birds get a warm reprieve in the winter, which keeps many here year-round.
