Why to live in Margarita, Venezuela | (ENG/ESP)

Margarita, Margarita... Whenever I am stressed in my routine, my mind shows me all the memories, sights, and sounds of Margarita, and I automatically smile. However sometimes, if I'm very very stressed, I get angry that I'm not there.

I've never been a beach girl. Despite being born in a tropical country, with lots of sun and colors, and with the beach just a short distance from the home where I grew up, the sea and that lifestyle have never been something I have considered for my future. Until I went to Margarita... And everything changed.

Margarita is an island that left an imprint in my mountainous heart. And I realized that both the mountains and the beach can be my home.

How not be amazed at those colors and those landscapes full of blue? To the point that at the exit of the supermarket, you have the view of the beach right in front of your eyes.

Life in flip-flops, the salty breeze, tousled hair, the beach at your disposal, the seas and places to discover, life slowing down... Of course, it sounds great.

Margarita has life and things to do at all hours. In the morning, you can go to the port and buy fish fresh from the sea. You have breakfast and then you can go to the beach (and boy, you really have options to choose from!) and lie on the sand for a while in your bikini, no matter if you can see your "extra kilos" or cellulite, go into the sea all day if you want, and stay to watch the sunset.

Stroll along the boulevards in flip-flops with your hair drying in the salt-filled breeze, get together with friends to listen to music and dance on the beach until late, and even work with a view of the sea.

I know it sounds like a very utopian image because clearly, you have to work and fulfill your responsibilities to make ends meet. But that scene can be easily available to you living in Margarita.

Now, from a more realistic perspective, obviously before making such a decision, you have to consider different aspects. For example, where to live and in what conditions.

Like the rest of the country, Margarita does not escape the Venezuelan reality. Public services such as water and electricity are the precariousness of everyday life. Power outages and lack of water is a constant reality to which the vast majority of the population is, like the rest of us, adapted. The people of Margarita and Venezuelans, in general, have learned to adapt to this unfortunate situation and have been able to move forward with the lame leg.

That, to my surprise, has not been an excuse for the recent increase in foreign tourism in Margarita. When I went there, there were a lot of people with blonde hair in the streets and at the airport (which is not necessarily common).

Russians, Germans, and gringos are some of the nationalities I heard were visiting Margarita recently. And many foreigners have started to invest in the island.

Margarita is slowly picking up as a business opportunity.

Europeans are happy in the Caribbean, some say.
And who wouldn't be, I say.

Property rentals in Margarita are unfortunately beyond the reach of the average Venezuelan, however, some can do it. And many foreigners see an opportunity to buy these properties.

I feel extremely privileged to have known and spent a few days in a place like Margarita. I am aware that it is a place that most people in Venezuela cannot afford to go to. That is to say, it is an island that can only be reached by plane or ferry. Therefore, it can be somewhat expensive.

And of course, I know I am speaking from my perspective as a tourist. It is one thing to visit a place as a tourist, and another thing to live there. But, all in all, Margarita is an option for me now, and maybe in the future.

Hopefully, someday I will be able to visit the island of the Virgen del Valle again. And who knows, something else.

Margarita, Margarita... Cada vez que estoy estresada en mi rutina, mi mente me presenta los recuerdos, vistas y sonidos del mar margariteño, y automáticamente sonrío. Aunque a veces, si estoy muy muy estresada, me da rabia no estar de nuevo allí.

Yo nunca he sido una chica de playa. A pesar de nacer en un país tropical, con mucho sol y colores, y con la playa a escaso tiempo del hogar donde crecí, el mar y ese estilo de vida nunca ha sido algo que me he planteado para mi futuro. Hasta que fui a Margarita... Y todo cambió.

Margarita es una isla que dejó una huella en mi montañero corazón. Y me di cuenta de que tanto la montaña como la playa pueden ser mi hogar.

Cómo no quedarte maravillado con esos colores y esos paisajes llenos de azul. Al punto de que a la salida del supermercado, tienes la vista a la playa justo frente a tus ojos.

La vida en chanclas, el salitre de la brisa, el pelo alborotado, la playa a tu disposición, los mares y lugares que descubrir, la vida más despacio... Por supuesto que suena muy bien.

Margarita tiene vida y cosas que hacer a toda hora. En la mañana, puedes ir con los pescaderos del puerto y comprar pescado recién sacado del mar. Desayunas y luego puedes ir a la playa (y vaya que tienes opciones de dónde escoger)... Tirarte un rato en la arena en bikini, sin importar que se te vean los "kilitos de más" ni la celulitis, meterte al mar todo el día si quieres, y quedarte a ver el atardecer.

Pasear por los bulevares en chanclas y el cabello secándose con la brisa llena de sal, reunirte con amigos a escuchar música y bailar en la orilla de la playa hasta tarde, e incluso trabajar con vistas al mar.

Sé que suena como una imagen muy utópica, porque claramente hay que trabajar y cumplir con las responsabilidades para subsistir. Pero esa escena puede estar a tu disposición fácilmente viviendo en Margarita.

Ahora bien, desde una perspectiva más realista, obviamente antes de tomar una decisión así, hay que considerar distintos aspectos. Como por ejemplo, dónde vivir y en qué condiciones.

Como todo el resto del país, Margarita no se escapa de la realidad venezolana. Obviamente, los servicios públicos como agua y luz son las precariedades del día a día. Los cortes eléctricos y la falta de agua en los hogares, son una realidad constante a la que la gran mayoría de la población está, como el resto de nosotros, adaptada. El margariteño y el venezolano en general ha aprendido a adaptarse a esta lamentable situación y ha sabido seguir adelante con la pata coja.

Eso, para mi sorpresa, no ha sido excusa para el reciente incremento del turismo extranjero en Margarita. Cuando yo fui, había mucho catire por la calle y en el aeropuerto.

Rusos, alemanes y gringos son algunas de las nacionalidades que escuché estaban visitando Margarita recientemente. Y muchos extranjeros, de hecho, han comenzando a invertir en la isla.

Margarita está poco a poco retomándose como una oportunidad de negocio.

Los europeos son felices en el caribe, algunos dicen.
Y quién no, digo yo.

Los alquileres de propiedades en Margarita están lamentablemente alejados del alcance del venezolano promedio, sin embargo, definitivamente hay quien puede hacerlo. Y muchos extranjeros ven una oportunidad en la compra de estas propiedades.

Me siento sumamente privilegiada de haber conocido y vivido unos días en un lugar como Margarita. Estoy consciente de que es un lugar al que la mayoría de la gente en Venezuela no puede darse el lujo de ir. Es decir: se trata de una isla cuyo acceso es mediante avión o ferry. Por tanto, puede ser algo costoso.

Y claro, sé que estoy hablando desde mi perspectiva como turista. Una cosa es visitar un lugar como turista, y otra cosa es vivir allí. Pero, en definitiva, Margarita es una opción para mí ahora, quizá en un futuro.

Ojalá algún día pueda volver a visitar la isla de la Virgen del Valle. Y quién sabe, algo más.
