Two girls, a dog and a hill | Los Cinaros, Mérida - Venezuela (ENG/ESP)

Usually, I'm trapped in my responsibilities, but whenever I can, I try to escape to the mountains for a little while. I already have several stories from those outings on this blog.
This time, Andre, Benito, and I went to a place we hadn't visited in a long time: Los Cinaros.

Usualmente estoy atrapada en mis responsabilidades, pero siempre que puedo, intento escaparme un ratico a la montaña. Ya tengo varias historias de esos paseos en este blog.
Esta vez, Andre, Benito y yo nos fuimos a un lugar que teníamos mucho tiempo sin visitar: Los Cinaros.

What's curious is that this place, besides being little known, is a kind of large backyard for the houses around it, which is why we saw cattle and horses that probably belong to the locals.
It's called Los Cinaros because that's the name of the peculiar trees there, with their characteristic twisted peach-colored trunks that beautify the path and provide shade.

Lo curioso es que este lugar, además de ser poco conocido, es una especie de gran patio trasero de las casas que se encuentran alrededor, razón por la cual vimos ganado y caballos que probablemente pertenecen a los residentes de la zona.
Se llama Los Cinaros ya que ese es el nombre de los peculiares árboles que allí hay, con sus característicos troncos torcidos color durazno, que embellecen y dan sombra en todo el camino.

Truly, this is a short, incredibly fun, and beautiful hike that you can enjoy in the morning if you're short on time.

Realmente, este es un paseo corto, divertidísimo y precioso que puedes disfrutar en media mañana si estás corto de tiempo.

From the moment you leave the asphalt road until you reach the green hill that turns into a natural slide —more on that later—, it's about 15 to 20 minutes if you walk slowly.

Desde que dejas la calle de asfalto hasta la verde colina que se convierte en un tobogán natural -ya hablaremos de eso-, son aproximadamente 15 a 20 minutos si vas a paso lento.

After crossing a small fence, you arrive at the immense, lush green hill that offers one of the best views of all of Mérida and its mountains.
I found it amusing because the first thing I thought when I saw the hill was the default Windows wallpaper from back in the early 2000s, which was precisely a view of a lush green hill on a sky so blue.

Luego de cruzar una pequeña cerca, llegas a la colina inmensa, verdísima y preciosa que te ofrece una de las mejores vistas de toda Mérida y sus montañas.
Me parecía gracioso porque lo primero que pensé al ver la colina, fue en el fondo predeterminado de Windows de por allá a principios de los 2000, que era justamente una vista de una colina verdísima sobre un cielo azulísimo.

And if you turn your back on the hill, you're faced with one of the most beautiful panoramas of Mérida: green and more green, mountains all around, vast skies, peaks, birds, and the city and little towns below. And the higher you climb the mountain, the more imposing the Sierra Nevada in front of you becomes.

Y si te giras dándole la espalda a la colina, ves justo frente a ti una de las panorámicas más hermosas de Mérida: verde y más verde, todo alrededor son montañas, amplios cielos, picos, aves y la ciudad y pueblitos abajo. Y mientras más subes por la montaña, más imponente se te hace la Sierra Nevada que tienes enfrente.

Now, about the natural slide.
We already knew about the delights that Los Cinaros offers to visitors, so we came prepared: we brought our cardboard box.

Ahora bien, el tobogán natural.
Nosotras ya sabíamos de las bondades que Los Cinaros ofrece al visitante, por lo cual nos fuimos preparadas: llevamos nuestra caja de cartón.

Why a cardboard box?
Simple: to be kids again.

¿Por qué una caja de cartón?
Fácil: para ser niño otra vez.

When we reached the hill, we decided to rest for a while because lately, the sun has been relentless in Mérida (despite it being a "cold" state), and we refreshed ourselves in the shade of a beautiful tree.
A few minutes later, excitement took hold of me, and we decided to dismantle the box to use it as a sled. The cardboard helped us slide better down that wide, green hill.

Cuando llegamos a la colina, decidimos descansar un rato porque últimamente el sol está inclemente en Mérida (a pesar de ser un estado "frío") y nos refrescamos bajo la sombra de un precioso árbol.
Pocos minutos después, la emoción se apoderó de mí y decidimos desarmar la caja para usarla como deslizador. El cartón nos ayudaba a deslizarnos mejor por esa amplia y verde colina.

You simply sit on the cardboard, hold onto its edges, and let the hill do its thing: you slide and let yourself be carried away.

Simplemente te sientas sobre el cartón, te agarras firme de sus bordes, y dejas que la colina haga lo suyo: te deslizas y te dejas llevar.

It's worth noting that the hill is quite steep and long, and on the cardboard, you can reach a considerable speed, so you have to be careful to choose the right path for your descent to avoid falling into any holes or ditches and hurting yourself (not to mention tripping over some dried organic remnants from cows or horses).

Cabe destacar que la colina es bastante inclinada y larga, y sobre el cartón se puede alcanzar una velocidad considerable, por lo que hay que tener cuidado de escoger bien el camino que seguirás en tu bajada para no caer en algún hueco o zanja y lastimarte (además de no tropezarte con un poco de restos orgánicos de vacas o caballos, secos como piedras).

On the other hand, the cold, strong breeze made us feel like we might take flight, like Aladdin and his magic carpet, but with our piece of cardboard as we slid down the hill.

Por otro lado, la brisa fría y fuerte nos daba la sensación de que saldríamos volando, como Aladin y su alfombra, pero con nuestro pedazo de cartón cuando nos deslizábamos por la colina.

Meanwhile, Benito was the happiest dog in the world: he ran freely all over the hill, rolled in the grass over and over, and, as always, looked out for us and was attentive to everything (except when he relaxed so much that he closed his eyes).

A todas estas, Benito era el perro más feliz del mundo: corría libre por toda la colina, se revolcaba en la grama una y otra vez, y como siempre, cuidaba de nosotras y estaba atento a todo (excepto cuando se relajaba tanto que cerraba los ojitos).

We spent a good time there, amidst emotions and fun, and moments of serenity and silence, observing the marvelous landscape in front of us and all around.

Pasamos un buen rato allí, entre emociones y diversiones, y momentos de serenidad y silencio observando la maravilla de paisaje que teníamos en frente y a todo nuestro alrededor.

As a curious fact, we had this delightful outing on Children's Day, and it wasn't even planned. Perhaps more than coincidence, it was a kind of gift to remember what it's like to enjoy the world's wonders like a child —sometimes hidden in a lush green hill, good friends, and a piece of cardboard.

Como dato curioso, hicimos este paseo tan divertido el Día del Niño, y sin planificarlo. Quizá más que coincidencia, fue una especie de regalo para recordar lo que es disfrutar como un niño del mundo y sus bondades, que a veces se esconden en una colina verdísima, buenos amigos y un pedazo de cartón.
