Classic Cars Show in Newton Abbot, 2023 [Photo Compilation]

(Edited)

Last weekend was wet and miserable, but I needed to get out of the house for some fresh air to clear my mind. So, I took a walk into the town of Newton Abbot, and lo and behold, there was a classic car show in the town.

I'll say this for the umpteenth time: "I love classic cars, and I think I was born in the wrong era."

They are some sexy babes, as I like to call them, and one of the owners of this 1963 MG told me that I could sit inside if I liked.

His kind offer caught me off-guard, and I was hesitant because I was wearing my raincoat and I respect these cars too much to do anything trivial like wet the seats, but I would have been silly to say no, so inside I sat momentarily.

... and I quickly snapped this photo.
Inside felt compact like the kind of vehicle you would enjoy driving solo for a spin around the town or maybe it's just my visualisation.

You see, I have dreams, and wishes (no real goals because of course, classic cars are a luxury) to own an MG Midget one day, because they are one of my favourite cars, despite any counter opinions that anyone has against them.
The owner agreed with me. He said he has a modern convertible car, but it has always been his dream to own an MG Midget he's had this one for five years now, and he said his dream did not come true until he got to his 50s so he spurred me on for keeping my dreams alive.

The engine was in immaculate condition, and he and I agreed on one thing; The simplicity of mechanics back then.

I feel that modern-day technology is great, but it has taken the fun out of mechanics. I think it's a great feeling of achievement when something goes wrong with a car and the owner can self-examine and figure out the problem, without needing a computerised diagnosis.

He gave me a close-up and said that when it stops, he knows exactly what is wrong and he can easily fix it.

I'll be sure to check the website to see when the next car show is because he says that there are car shows every few weeks and that I should return.

Here are some other MG's, a few years apart, with subtle changes to the designs.

This white MG, which is different from the one above, was from a later year about 1967, while the green and red ones are from circa 1978.
They are all amazingly beautiful, but my favourite was the first white one that I featured above.

The feast entailed these other classics, that are equally gorgeous.

Singer Roadster

There was a guy next to me with a keen interest in this one, so I didn't get the chance to speak directly with this owner to find out the year of this one. However, I think this Singer was a fairly one-off car.

When I think of Singer motors, my my goes to sewing machines, not cars, but this is an absolute stunner.

Look how elegant and fine steering wheels were back in the day. A classy classic:)

One of the most stylish car bonnets that I've ever seen, with two vertical compartments.

Again, in mint condition.

Pontiac Parisienne

So many characters that this would be the perfect fit comes to mind.
This is a statement piece in my opinion, but I still like it.

Riley One-Point-Five

Morris Minor

Austin A30

This is an interesting colour, and one of the rare modern cars that come in a similar colour is the Nissan Figaro baby blue, which I also like.

Souped-up Twin Cam Mini

This one caught many eyes, especially the guys.

Two Extras

I didn't get too many of this one, which I'm guessing is a Mazda Toyota MR2.

... and this Renault 5...

I found each of these designs and models interesting, and with classic cars, I got the opportunity to see what cars were before my time.
What is note-worthy about vehicles back then was that not accessible to the average Joe. It was mainly the rich and famous who could afford them, and it makes me think about the supply and demand of then versus now.

Demand was scarced back then, and supplies focused on their craftmanship and created these masterpieces that continue to turn heads and catch the eye of every generation. They all had an identity, and I believe that these cars should be preserved by all means.

Which was your favourite Peeps?

All images are mine, and were taken in Newton Abbot town centre on Saturday 16 September 2023

There are a few red cars in the post. Which one, in particular, do you like?
I had the Pontiac Parisienne as the first cover photo and I have now changed the cover photo to the Singer Roadster.

I love them all:)

I'd like one Singer Roadster in aquamarine, please. So gorgeous!

I hope you can own a beautiful MG Midget a lot sooner than you expect it.

Thank you for the pics :)

Ah, aquamarine! That sounds unique. I think you'd be onto something there!
Nice idea:)

Maybe someday with the MG, not right now, but I think definitely in a few years time :)

That Pontiac and Mini though! Just what I like. 🔥

I've never seen a widebody Mini before, that thing is just one of a kind. The Pontiac gives off a slight lowrider vibe too. Love it!

Great choices.
Yes, it's the first time I've ever seen a mini like that. The black colour works well for it too.
Yeah, the Pontiac is a whole vibe by itself.
I have never seen the town look so pretty 😆😍

I have a thing for small cars, hatchbacks mostly, and the Mini Cooper is probably the epitomic example of a "perfect" hatchback. From then to now, it's just the perfect size and best-looking hatchback, in my books.

The Pontiac is just all American muscle, and the muscle cars back from the 60s and 70s are absolute favorites of mine.

Your comments reminded me that I forgot to post a Mazda MR 2, which I think you'd like, and there's also a Renault 5 :)

MR2 is a Japanese classic, we have quite a few models in our country. Some call it the Japanese Ferrari, alongside the Honda NSX.

And btw, The MR2 is actually a Toyota, not a Mazda, but yes, it does look quite like an 80s Mazda RX7 from the front.

Japanese Ferrari

AH, I can see why.

Thank you so much for that correction. I only have one photo and I wasn't sure. When I google Mazda MR2, this car comes up, but now that you've mentioned it, yes, I noticed that it says Totyota, indeed! Thanks 😊

Cars from the 80s look quite similar you know, even I make mistakes when it comes to these older models. Especially the Japanese cars, with pop-up headlights and a boxy shape haha. The ones from the 70s had some curves, but the real curves and sharpness came in the 90s. In the 90s era, that's when the most popular Japanese cars were produced; those are now icons and have reached astronomical price tags.

Almost everyone knows about the 90s models, whether it be the Toyota Supra, Nissan Skyline GTR, Mazda RX7, Acura NSX, or Mitsubishi Evo.

Yeah, I had a 1995 Honda Prelude with the sunroof, which was a classic mix of elegance and sport. I absolutely loved that car, but my dad sold it recently.

The 95 Prelude is a beauty! Many JDM lovers here adore it because of its rarity in our country. We have quite a big Honda car community here too.

Bangladesh sounds similar to Jamaica. Huge Honda community there, and yes, the '95 Prelude was a highly sought-after car.
I bought mine from a guy who lowered the springs and made it a real lower rider. I struggled to go over some speed bumps, and it was impractical for Jamaican roads. When I left it with my dad, he had a mechanic raise it up, and he drove it as a second car for many years until he eventually decided to part with it.

I struggled to go over some speed bumps

That's an issue here too. Most of the cars here have so much ground clearance, that it's actually harmful for the car. 😂

and he drove it as a second car for many years until he eventually decided to part with it.

For how long did you have it in the family? And did you buy it brand new back then?

I bought it used (in mint conditioner) and had it for about 3 years. I migrated but didn't want to sell it, so my dad kept it for about 15 years. It was a fun car to drive especially around corners:)

15 years is a long time, even for a reliable Japanese car. That beauty surely served you and your family well.

Yes, it sure did!
Everywhere I drove it, by the time I got out of the car and was closing the door, there was someone asking me if I was selling it.

And that's what makes it special haha. 😉

What a coincidence, eh? I love it when you don't set out to attend an event, but one just crops up, and is just the right thing for you :D

Yeah, there could be no better event for me than a classic car show. I could not believe it. 😆😍

Yup, that's Mister 2 toward the end. A cousin had one from that generation. I kinda want one.

One of my friends here in the western US has a son who bought an MG Midget. Parts are more difficult to source, and it has sen some miles, but the kid has the background to get it up and running. He's already taken it to some cars & coffee meetups.

Hehe! Yeah, they say the MGs are not the most reliable of cars, but man, that wouldn't stop me from getting one later in life.

What a great passion you have for classic cars. Interesting exhibit. These cars were designed to last for decades because of the type of material they are made of, of course with proper maintenance and care. In the right hands they will remain a classic.

Welcome to Hive Motors.

Hello @jlufer
Thank you😊
Yes, the classic car owners were encouraging, so I'm optimistic that I'll probably own one in this lifetime 🤞🤗

I have loved every photo @millycf1976 friend, but my favorite has been that Mini (Souped-up Twin Cam Mini) which looks beautiful as well as widened and seems to be called "Screaming chicken"... What a exotic name! :))

I like the Pontiac Parisienne. I can hear it rumbling across the Atlantic, haha. I would give your MG Midget as the runner up though. I almost stumbled across a Veteran car show a few weeks back but I was hustling on my side job. Any car show in my opinion are fun to see.

I'll say this for the umpteenth time: "I love classic cars, and I think I was born in the wrong era."

I needed to be in the 60's or 70's as an adult. What decade do you wish you were in ?

I agree with you 100%. That Pontiac Parisienne is on point, with no denying... but the MG though, for me 😍

I felt really lucky to walk right into the show because I missed it last year.

What decade do you wish you were in?

Hmm, it's not nice to think about the war, but I think I should have been in the 50's or 60's. I think life was a lot simplified in many ways, but I still understand that there were many drawbacks for women especially.

Wishing you a lovely week ahead:)))

I didn’t even know they still did classic car shows. I use to go to a lot when I was younger but they slowly phased them out. Good to see them slowly starting back again!

Hehe! I'm always elated to see these shows, indeed! It's a rich part of history that's great for the youth to see, and great for the old to reminisce on the good ole days when cars were spectacular.

Thanks for stopping by:)
