New life on my mother's balcony
To live is to be born at every moment.
- Erich Fromm -
When I was a kid I often saw nests with eggs inside but many times the nests were abandoned from the birds and the eggs stayed there.
Maybe I was too curious or intrusive and the mother decided to leave the eggs back, without nurturing them and changing site.
A few weeks ago, me and @healthymary were at my mother’s place in Verona. I was holding some lessons about cryptocurrencies into an IT school in Verona plus meeting a lot of people that were ages I did not see like some former teammates.
Then my mum told us that there was a nest on the back balcony. Having a nest on a Balcony is usually a great omen since new lives have chosen that place to born. That means being much respectful of the mother and father without invading the place they thought being safe. That’s why we did not give them anything to eat or else.
Simply left that balcony almost non-used for weeks to give some peace to the mother blackbird and making her feeling safe.
We also took care to move slowly the roller shutters she has on that balcony.
Here is the first picture from 31st march. The nest was made. But we were not yet sure if it was really going to be populated from eggs and then baby blackbirds.
Then, some days later, on the 4th of April some eggs appeared
I can’t tell you how much happy my mother was. To some people that she did not like, she even prevented to go to the toilet in her place, since it was directly onto the balcony where the nest was placed.
She studied all the she could about the birth of blackbirds. She understood that more or less two weeks were required for the birth of the small blackbirds and that the light blue colour was correct for those eggs.
And on the 19th of April, the magic of the start of new lives began
Here are the baby blackbirds, just after birth. My mother could take the picture in one moment when the mother and father BlackBird were away to hunt some worms and seeds to feed them.
Here is another from 19th April of the small Blackbirds.
And here is 20th April. You can see some growing black feathers on their pink skin :D
21st April, they are becoming more black!
22nd April: here the beak appears
And here the 23rd April: the beak is growing and the body is becoming more black.
And here following, a current picture of the 24th April, after breakfast provided by their parents (I think that my mother is doing like the Big Brother :D). Here the feathers are growing and the black starts appearing widely, the eyes are more defined like the beak.
I think that the one on the left was staring at my mum, as it was wandering that he/she remembered its own mum quite different and that was its first contact with a human (likely a friendly and respectful one).
25th April: here they posed for the picture :D
26th April: they start feeling the narrow space of the nest
27th April: one of them, the first born, started jumping outside the nest
28th April: one of them was checking on my mum, but they overall understood that she was just a curious human :D
29th April: the space is almost over
30th April: last day in the nest. Here the space was definitely too small and they started flying. I personally saw one of them flying away. Not really a precise flight, quite uncertain but it managed to land somewhere and start the grown-up life of a blackbird around.
I am not living at my mums place anymore, but a couple of weekend with @healthymary we were there, and we could see with our eyes these lovely birds having birth and growing day after day.
And my mum documenting all the steps :D
It was a wonderful experience 😍
So well documented ! Thanks for this very nice contribution 😉
Thanks for your appreciation and support :D
Yes, it has been a great experience and emotion seeing those little birds having birth and then growing up until their first flight.
And in the first days, when I saw such small pinkies, I was wondering how on earth they would have turned into big black flying birds. And nature once more, astonished me with its magic
