The city, formerly known as Dertona, Today it is known as "Tortona". is the oldest city under Roman rule in the west. It was founded in the 2nd century at the junction of the consulates of Postumia and Fulvia. Some archaeological remains can still be seen.

Maria Assunta and San Lorenzo Maria is the Cathedral of the Madonna Della Guaraia, whose golden statue can be seen from a distance.
