HEALTH BENEFITS OF UNRIPE PAWPAW PULP, SEEDS AND LEAVES.

During one of my projects in my 4th year in school, I worked on the health benefits of unripe pawpaw seeds, fruits , pulp and leaves and I must say that I really learned a lot on this topic as I discovered the importance of the ‘common pawpaw’ we all have at our backyards.
Firstly herbalism or herbal medicines as it’s commonly known, according to Wikipedia, is the study of pharmacognosy and the use of medicinal plants, which are a basis of traditional medicine.
Most times I ask myself why the ancient people lived up to hundreds of years and how they survived without any modern medical supplies.
Well it’s of no doubt that they survived by making their own medicines from natural sources. Those days, almost every leaf, fruits and seeds had their own importance to them.
Pawpaw is one of the most important nutritious fruit with its sweet taste and are also rich in nutrients such as vitamin c, A, E, magnesium, etc.
But our main focus of this post is the health benefit of UNRIPE PAWPAW.
The green pawpaw is mostly ignored because it’s simply bitter compared to the orange (ripe) pawpaw.

1.Unripe pawpaw contains a digestive enzyme called papain. According to study, it aids in digestion which supplements for lack of gastric acid. This enzyme also aids intestinal irritation and stomach mucus.
2.It also contains anti-inflammatory properties that helps patients with rheumatoid arthritis and asthma. And can also treat inflamed tonsils.
3.Unripe pawpaw is a good source of antioxidants that could prevent various health complications and heart attack.
- The vitamin A, & E present in green pawpaw helps with weight loss.

1.Just like the pulp itself, pawpaw seeds contains a lot of papain, which helps in digestion, especially protein digestion and can also help to get rid of parasites such as intestinal worms.
2.The anti-inflammatory properties can also be used to treat bacterial infections, particularly food poisoning caused by bacteria.
3.Helps in lowering weight and cholesterol this is due to the monounsaturated fatty acids like oleic acid present in the pawpaw seed.
4.The fiber content in the seeds helps regulate bowel movements, removing toxins and maintaining healthy gut.
5.It prevents constipation as well
6.Pawpaw seeds contains polyphenols that are powerful antioxidants which helps the body fight different types of cancer.
These are only but a few health benefits of unripe pawpaw pulp and seeds. In as much as there are numerous health benefits of pawpaw seeds and pulp, they also have some side effects such includes
•Consuming excess green pawpaw and seeds may cause diarrhea
•According to study, consuming excess pawpaw seeds is not advisable to pregnant women as it could be harmful to the developing fetus
•Excess pawpaw seeds can also cause nausea etc.

1.Pawpaw leaf extract is popularly known in Africa for its benefits on blood sugar, the juice helps diabetic patients balance their blood sugar.
2.Pawpaw leaf extract is known to contain a lot of fiber, a nutrient that supports healthy digestive function. The leaf extract are often used to treat digestive problems such as bloating, heartburn and constipation.

4.It also promotes heathy skin, it can be used as exfoliant to remove dead skins and prevent skin diseases. These are made possible due to papain and chymopapain present in pawpaw leaf extract.
