The dairy boy
“Rose, like your name you are a rare beauty of nature. Right from when we were little I have adored you. Your hair golden as the rays of the sun, your skin the fairest ever, ever graceful…”
"Salvador, get over here and help me get Daisy back into the barn,” Mike interrupted little Salvador.
“Okay Dad,” Salvador said as he closed his diary and went to do what his father had said.
Salvador was the son of Mike and Angela. Salvador was born into a poor family. Even before he was born his grandfather had worked for the maistre and his family. His father was born into the same service and so was Salvador.
The maistre was pretty kind to them, unlike their former masters who treated them like slaves. Rose was the only daughter of the maistre, and the most beautiful girl Salvador had ever seen that gave him love at first sight.
He was just 10 years old when he fell in love with Rose and although he never had the chance to meet her or even say a word to her at 15 years he still felt the same way for her.
“In you go girl," Salvador said as he led Daisy into the shelter. He was done and immediately rushed back to his book.
“...even in your walks. I have never had the chance to talk to you. But I heard you were coming back from studying overseas and I promise to talk to you this time."
" Hey, what are you doing?” Angela came from behind. Salvador quickly closed the book like he was hiding a deadly secret in the book.
“Nothing… just writing in my diary,” Salvador replied to her.
“You know if you took your studies the way you take this diary of yours seriously you would be the smartest at school," Angela said.
The cook came into the barn where Salvador and his mom were seated on some stacks of hay.
"Salvador, I will be needing some milk from Daisy. When you are done milking her you can just bring it to the kitchen.” The cook said and left shortly after.
Salvador milked Daisy and carried the milk to the kitchen. He was cautious of his mom or anybody reading his diary so he carried it everywhere with him.
Unfortunately for him, he left it in the kitchen where it was found by the maistre.
That evening Salvador was sitting with Daisy in the barn when the maistre walked in. Salvador immediately stood up shocked. It was the first time the Maistre ever entered the barn.
“Good evening maistre," Salvador greeted the maistre with a slight bow.
“You are the dairy boy right?" The maistre asked with his right hand behind him.
“Yes, I am Salvador," Salvador said nervously. He wondered what carried the maistre down to the barn and he even came looking for him, the dairy boy.
“You left this behind," the Maistre said as he revealed what was in his right hand, it was Salvador’s diary.
“I am very sorry maistre, pardon me,” Salvador said.
The maistre handed the diary to Salvador, "Here,... I know it is wrong to read one's diary but I was quite curious and was surprised by its content.”
“Look I am going to be honest with you…” the Maistre placed his hand on Salvador's shoulder like a father to a son, “..., love is an amazing feeling that has no boundaries, but the reality is that you can never be with my daughter. I am not saying this to make you feel down more than you are already, but it's the truth. She is a well-learned elite and you… you are the dairy boy.” The Maistre said then left.
Salvador was speechless, after all even if he had something to say he couldn't say anything to his maistre.
That night the words of the maistre kept on replaying in his head and the the same with every other night. Salvador swore to make it in life and put effort into everything he did.
Years later he graduated as the best student in the state and was given the job of begovernor'sovernors accountant.
Although he didn't get a chance with Rose who got married off to a rich man by her father he was satisfied with his success.
His former Maistre always bowed his head in shame when he hey saw him in VIP meetings and gatherings.
I am deeply satisfied that Salvador made something great out of his life. Sometimes, childish butterflies don't last longer but they leave a deeper impression that can impact the future.
I like the way you carry your readers with you.
Well done.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed it and appreciate your thoughtful feedback.
The Maistre was wrong by looking down on the poor boy
But good thing Salvador didn't let that word Knock him down. He made a name for himself.
Nice story.
Thank you! Yes, Salvador's resilience is truly inspiring, and it's great to see him succeed despite the challenges he faced.
