Teaching Kids how to cook is an Important Life Skill

Teaching kids how to cook is an essential life skill that goes beyond just learning how to prepare a meal. It creates independence, creativity and a sense of responsibility while offering opportunities for hands on learning. Involving children in the kitchen can also promote healthy eating habits, as they become more aware of the ingredients and processes involved in creating their meals.

Tonight, we had a memorable family experience with a Korean BBQ at home and my 7 year old truly shined as they took on the role of chef, cooking for the entire family. Watching them handle the responsibility was not only awesome but also highlighted the many benefits of introducing children to cooking at an early age.

When kids learn how to cook they begin to feel a sense of accomplishment. My 7 year old, for instance took great pride in grilling the meat and on the tabletop Korean BBQ which we bought for $30. Each time they flipped a piece of marinated beef or arranged the grill, their confidence grew. Cooking helps children understand that they can complete tasks independently, which can spill over into other areas of their lives, making them more confident in their abilities.

Cooking is an excellent opportunity for hands on learning that is fun and rewarding. Kids get to measure ingredients, follow recipes and see the result of their efforts. Tonight, my child enjoyed the interactive process of cooking, especially seeing the raw ingredients transform into delicious food they could share with us. They learned about timing, heat control and even a bit about Korean cuisine and flavours, all while having fun.

Cooking together creates lasting memories. Our Korean BBQ night was not just about the food but the experience of preparing and enjoying a meal together. It brought a sense of teamwork as we all took on different roles.

Setting the table, preparing the ingredients and of course my 7 year old daughter handling the grill. It's moments like these that strengthen family bonds and make mealtime more than just eating as it's about sharing an experience.

Cooking is a life skill that will serve kids well into adulthood. As they grow older knowing how to prepare their meals can lead to greater self sufficiency. Tonight’s Korean BBQ was just one example, but these early experiences in the kitchen can lay the foundation for a lifetime of cooking skills. Starting with small tasks, like grilling under supervision helps kids feel more capable and responsible.

Overall, teaching children to cook is not just about food it’s about nurturing life skills, creativity and confidence. Tonight, our Korean BBQ brought us closer together and gave my daughter a chance to shine, showing how much they’ve already learned and how much they can grow through the joys of cooking.

I was not taught how to cook when I was small because my mum does everything for me but I am glad I eventually learned how to do it
