How To Speak Australian

avatar

G'day mates! How's it hanging? With Hive's expansion and a lot more Aussie's now coming online I thought it would be a great time to throw down a few key uniquely Australian slang words and sentences to better accommodate everyone.

There's been a few times where I myself have been in discussion with people and thrown out a few one liners which have left discord channels in a phase of confusion and at times in laughter.

Did you know the correct Aussie term for a meat pie is a Dog's Eye and if you want some tomato sauce (we don't use ketchup) it is referred to as Dead Horse.

One phrase that got discord recently in a state of laughter was You think you're $#!7 don't stink but your farts give ya away. This is a common phrase for someone who is full of themselves and thinks they are great, you'll often see this person around abit talking how great their life is and how perfect everything is for them and always talking down to people.

I have also often used the term Rorted this is just an Aussie slang word for scammed, easy one but a good one and can be applied to a lot of other scenarios.

Often you might hear someone ask to Hit the frog and toad this just means heading off, going home, leaving.

Rooted is another interesting one as in Australia it means tired and often used in ways like G mate, you look rooted Noting that the G doesn't stand for Gangster and it can I also be used in Struth, it's hot. The sun has rooted me today or just I'm rooted.

She'll be right mate is one of my favourite terms and one I use often it is often used upon many applications in times of dire circumstances when you know something is probably absolutely rooted and there is nothing you can do about it. In translation is it just means everything will be ok.

What's the John Dory Just a sticky beak slang for what's the story/what happened. If you're not sure what sticky beak means it means someone getting involved in something that doesn't involve them but they just want to know.

Tell him he's dreaming This one is relatively new and was made popular by the Australian film The Castle It is more to do when purchasing items or services and trades if the price is way over market price the response is Tell him his dreaming.

If someone is Pulling the wool over your eyes it means they are being deceitful and trying to lie to you, often for personal gain although if someone states They're so hungry they could eat a horse and chase the jockey They're being serious, serious in such that they are hungry and want to eat ASAP.

A few stubbies short of a six pack No ladies look out this has nothing to do with abs and everything to do with explaining someone being dumb. If someone say's this to you, they think you're slow or an idiot so be warned.

The other relatively new on is Furphy it's actually a newish beer but now has taken on it's own folk law saying as another word for an over emphasises story an example is telling a story of catching a 5 - 6kg fish when it was only 800gs and it got away, but you had it when you didn't.

If something is Better than a ham sandwich it means it is better than nothing and if you're asking a girl to show you her flange gasket or where the Axe hit her.... That is the nether regions of a woman. Careful of that one it is popular amongst tradies to tourists because it confuses them much like the good ol drop bear and Kangawallafox that you need to watch out for.

One not to get confused with and you may need to read into situational awareness is when someone is asking you for a fair suck they mean fair go, their share or an equal amount.

Now I could be here all day but I might hand over to my fellow Aussie mates to see what else they can add and help build a thread of #Straya themed words and phrases.

Hi @melbourneswest. I'm here to remind you of OCD community rules, again!

We have a community called Cross Culture, which is about:

Sharing thoughts and experience about culture and language
Anything related to language or language learning is also welcome here. Study tips, study experience, practice blogs, and bilingual posts.

Oh wow I didn't know about that one. What kind of posts are good in OCD?

Why do you want to post in OCD? Posting in OCD does give you zero advantages.
Your focus should be on finding the best community for your post as that's where the audience is for your post.

But to answer your question, you should read the community rules.

That one's not on the incubation list in discord, thought I missed it. Sorry I do apologise.

So let me see if I understand what you mean. You're only posting in communities incubated by OCD, right?

Ha? No. Leo Finance isn't curated by OCD and I have been a member of Home Edders and Motherhood for years.

I am also a member of a few communities since before they were curated by OCD but haven't had anything to positively contribute for a bit so haven't. I don't want to post solely for the sake of OCD curation.

And I participate in contests from time to time. I have been around for years, that comment is an ouch.

You said you have to explain the rules to me agian and said "we have a community called" that is why I responded. I don't want to intentionally break a rule so I thought I missed something. When I double checked there is not OCD community called that.

I'm not sure why I have copped that accusation.

Who said it's an OCD community? OCD has one community and that's all.

Anyway, happy community hunting.
