Splinterlands - Are Legacy Cards Worth Their Value?

avatar

With new land 1.5 around the corner I was looking at the prices for older cards and trying to determine if they were good investments? Good investments in regards to being used in land 1.5 is the main factor.

Production Points

Before land the card price ratio of price over the card's DEC burn rate has been a key stat to determining how much more a card is valued over its burn rate. Now we have another ratio to value the cards based on land performance. This is Production Points over the $ of the card.

Not surprising the lowest cost cards in terms of DEC were also among the top lowest cost cards in PP per $. Best going rates were 200 PP per $.

The PP value rises dramatically when we go from regular foil to gold foil. As shown in chart above that a rarity from common to legendary in regular foil is only 500 PP difference. Meanwhile the same comparison of gold foil is a 8000 PP difference. It is clear gold foil will be worth more in land expansion than regular foil.

The other category separating the PP of a card besides rarity and foil type is the set printed. Alphas have a 10x multiplier while Beta has 5x and Untamed have 2x. The reward cards, promo, and Orb and Dice would also have some multiplier which makes it even more attractive to be looking at gold foil legendary reward cards.

Those cards in specific will have a significant amount of PP per cost. Would they not?

Just by different set of print one can see the lowest PP to $ per gold foil legendary has a significant difference. My interpretation is that the cards are being bought up which is leading to a wider price difference for the remaining cards left on the open market. This is very evident when we look at the lowest gold foil legendary reward cards sale prices.

For months gold foil cards like Djinn Biljka and Harklaw were in the $30 range but in past week it has pretty much doubled. I can conclude that the PP to $ on gold foil cards were likely a lot higher prior to the release of land 1.5 white paper.

Conclusions

As much as my anticipation of older legacy cards having additional boost in value for land 1.5 it has been a disappointment. In reality the more important factor toward the value of a card was its foil status. Whether it was gold foil or not matter a lot more than if it was alpha or beta or untamed. We can see this where a beta reward gold legend is 12,500 PP while an untamed reward gold legend is 5,000 PP. Compare the regular foil versions its night and day at 681 PP and 272 PP respectively. The numbers are just staggering just because they are gold foil.

Bottom line its not how old the cards are that matters more than the foil type of card. In conclusion be on the look out for max level gold foils or trying to maxing gold foil monsters if you want to earn more in the upcoming land expansion.

Until next time thanks for reading!!!

That is an interesting thing to find. I hope it helps the people who are into land and it looks like the people who bought gold foils before prices jumped will have an advantage.

A lot of those older cards just aren't used much anymore, and many are very cheap rentals. I think the old legacy cards will be used less and less with newer cards having new abilities. So in the end I think they will just keep going down in value...

Still got some old legendary gold somewhere, they will be good to use. I expected more from Alpha, but this is it. Let's see how it works out.
