Romances never go out of style, and idealizing an era because it has deep passionate vibes? It's certainly becoming more and more popular. Netflix brought a heyday of with their adaptations of The Bridgertons, creating a wave of fanaticism for a fictional love. Nonetheless, it's catching.

For the record, although I write with undertones of sarcasm and perhaps irony, I'm not above daydreaming about such an unbreakable romance. For that reason I couldn't stick with just the good taste of the series, so I had to read the Julia Quinn books, and live the full experience of falling in love with a Bridgerton.

However, I will not start from the first book, nor the second. Yes, they are very beautiful and gripping stories, but it wasn't until her third book that I knew what it was to love a Bridgerton. For that reason, I want to bring you this special content from a new section I will start working on, “BookHiver”.

So, without further ado, let's talk about An offer from a gentleman.

Qué conste que, aunque redacto con matices de sarcasmo y quizás ironía, no estoy exenta de soñar despierta con un romance tan inquebrantable. Por ese motivo no pude quedarme solo con el buen sabor de las series, así que tuve que leerme los libros Julia Quinn, y vivir la experiencia completa de enamorarse de un Bridgerton.

Sin embargo, no comenzaré desde el primer libro, ni el segundo. Sí, son historias muy hermosas y apasionantes, pero no fue hasta su tercer libro que supe qué era amar a un Bridgerton. Por ese motivo, quiero traerles este contenido especial de una nueva sección en la que comenzaré a trabajar, “BookHiver”.

Synopsis

As in the Cinderella story, Sophie sees her dream come true one night. Behind her stepmother's back, she dresses up like a queen and attends the most important masquerade ball in London. What's more, she manages to catch the eye of Benedict Bridgerton, the most attractive and charming bachelor at the gathering. “An offer from a gentleman” is the third book in Julia Quinn's Bridgerton romance saga. Published in 2001 under the title An Offer from a Gentleman, it recounts the romance of the second eldest brother in the family, Benedict Bridgerton.

It contains a total of 23 chapters plus a prologue and epilogue, for a total of 362 pages. Internally, the work is divided into two parts, the first in the first 5 chapters, and the second is composed of the remaining chapters.

Narrative

Nothing but flowers; Julia Quinn has an exquisite way of narrating events that keeps you on the edge of your seat, or better yet, moving your feet with excitement. Her writing makes you imagine every corner, every person, every action, emotions and feelings.

She begins by showing the reality of people who are not so privileged, which is a perfect counterpart since the personification of that term is our acclaimed protagonist family. So the fact that the author doesn't hold back to show a more crude and unfavorable situation, or the abuse and humiliation that someone of that time had to live with, makes the story even more interesting.

Of course, the influence of one of the most valued stories in history, Cinderella, is noticeable, but that is only a base, a small comparison to what this work encompasses. In addition, the narrative creates the ideal atmosphere to believe that this consuming romance is the most beautiful.

One of the most significant pluses for me in this book —and the rest of the saga— is the identifiable voice of the narrator. It has his personal essence; as the events unfold, the narrator is a faithful friend to the reader, and tells a “gossip” with luxuries and details, and better yet, builds suspense to give the final results. This is sometimes complicated to achieve, since most of the time a narrator is neutral, omniscient in a detached way, but here it is close, attentive and involving.

Comienza mostrando la realidad de las personas que no son tan privilegiada, lo cual es una contraparte perfecta puesto que la personificación de dicho término es nuestra aclamada familia protagonista. Así que el hecho de que la autora no se reprima para mostrar una situación más cruda y desfavorable, o el abuso y humillación con la que tenía que vivir alguien de aquella época, hace aún más interesante la historia.

Claro que se denota la influencia de un de los cuentos más valorados de la historia, Cenicienta, pero eso solo es una base, una comparación pequeña a lo que engloba esta obra. Además, la narrativa crea la atmósfera ideal para creer que ese romance que consume, es el más hermoso.

Uno de los pluses más significativos para mí en este libro —y el resto de la saga— es la voz identificable del narrador. Tiene su esencia personal; mientras van transcurriendo los hechos, el narrador es un fiel amigo del lector, y cuenta un “chisme” con lujos y detalles, mejor todavía, mete suspenso para dar los resultados finales. Esto a veces es complicado de lograr, puesto que mayormente un narrador es neutro, omnisciente de una forma despegada, pero aquí es cercana, atenta y envolvente.

Plot

The plot is charming, a love at first sight that has a premature separation and not only of years, but also of social scales.

After a sneaky success in his brothers' marriages, Benedict Bridgerton is not in the exact search for love, but he knows what would be incredible to feel something so meaningful. When he first sees Sophie at a masquerade ball, she stands out with ease, because even in the mask her beauty shows. The enchantment of the first glimpse leads to a dense and sparkling conversation. Both are enraptured in each other, but there is a deadline, and the magic escapes at 12 o'clock.

This is the departure of a deep love that Benedict begins to hold tightly. He becomes so enamored that no other woman manages to captivate him over the years, becoming a man indifferent to life and people. As he begins to reject the banalities of society, he savors the distaste of a routine that once seemed exciting to him. But an encounter with a woman in distress rekindles the heart of our protagonist.

What Benedict doesn't realize is that the woman with the frumpy clothes, captivating face but repellent character is the same woman who stole his passions. And when he begins to develop a deep attraction, he finds himself immersed in a struggle between a love of yesteryear and a current passion.

The approach of the work is well thought out, Julia Quinn did not launch into this saga without having her ideas well organized. The construction of the facts is put one after another, and although it is a work of romance and tend to minimize the fact of the difficulty of finding a good thread, it is clear that it takes a writing ability to link several plots and give development to the events as the characters.

It has excellent foundations, even more imposing than the first two books. And without a doubt, it's a top-notch romance.

Luego de un furtivo éxito en los matrimonios de sus hermanos, Benedict Bridgerton no está en la búsqueda exacta del amor, pero sabe qué sería increíble sentir algo tan significativo. Cuando ve por primera vez a Sophie en un baile de disfraces, ella destaca con facilidad, porque aún con el antifaz se nota su belleza. El encantamiento del primer vistazo los lleva a una conversación densa y chispeante. Ambos quedan embelesados el uno en el otro, pero hay una hora límite, y la magia se escapa a las 12.

Es aquí la partida de un amor profundo que Benedict comienza a resguardar con fuerza. Queda tan flechado que ninguna otra mujer logra cautivarlo al pasar los años, volviéndose un hombre indiferente con la vida y las personas. Lo que Benedict no se percata, es que aquella mujer de ropa desaliñada, rostro cautivador pero un carácter repelente es la misma que le robó sus pasiones. Y cuando comienza a desarrollar una atracción profunda, se ve inmerso en una lucha entre un amor de antaño y una pasión actual.

El planteamiento de la obra está bien pensado, Julia Quinn no se lanzó a esta saga sin tener bien organizada sus ideas. La construcción de los hechos se va poniendo uno tras otro, y aunque es una obra de romance y suelen minimizar el hecho de la dificultad de dar con un buen hilo conductual, es evidente que se necesita de una capacidad de escritura para enlazar varias tramas y darle desarrollo a los acontecimientos como a los personajes.

Tiene unas excelentes bases, aún más imponentes que los primeros dos libros. Y sin duda, es un romance de categoría.

I love Benedict Bridgerton, I find him the most charismatic, witty and intense brother in expressing what he feels. The development of this story is fascinating, lustful and memorable. But Benedict is shown to us in all his facets, in love, excited, unbridled, intense, repentant, reasonable, defensive, gentlemanly and exposed in body and soul.

He seems to me the most sentimental brother, although he does not expose his true thoughts to his family, he is a rapt soul. Benedict having the talent to paint, it is denoted that he is a character with a deeper perspective of life, he understands facts, gestures and situations. He knows what he wants, and loves with intensity.

For that reason, Sophie, an illegitimate daughter, raised under the teachings of a noblewoman, but lowered to a maid, is an outcast. In addition, she knows the decadence of society, vanity, insolence, abuse and cruelty. A character immersed in the harshness of protection, who is still capable of feeling sympathy and concern, makes the most ideal female for a dreamer like Benedict, because she wakes him up and puts his feet on the ground.
Their development, how they stick to their most primitive thoughts, where values and morals are a constant struggle, make this story my favorite.

The fact that Sophie accepts her love for Benedict and accepts herself is more significant than any old declaration of love. While watching Benedict give up everything regardless of society's opinion or his family makes it the most romantic gesture in the saga.

Truly their romance underpins this play.

Pero Benedict se nos muestra en todas sus facetas, enamorado, excitado, desbocado, intenso, arrepentido, razonable, defensor, caballero y expuesto en cuerpo y alma.

Me parece el hermano más sentimental, aunque no exponga sus verdaderos pensamientos a su familia, es un alma embelesada. Benedict al tener el talento de pintar, se denota que es un personaje con una perspectiva de la vida más profunda, comprende hechos, gestos y situaciones. Sabe lo que quiere, y ama con intensidad.

Por ese motivo, Sophie, una hija ilegítima, criada bajo las enseñanzas de una noble, pero rebajada a doncella, que es una paria. Adicional, conoce las decadencias de la sociedad, la vanidad, las insolencias, el abuso y la crueldad. Un personaje sumergido en capaz duras de protección, que aun así es capaz de sentir simpatía y preocupación, hace de la fémina más ideal para un soñador como Benedict, porque lo despierta y le pone los pies en la tierra.

Su desarrollo, cómo se apegan a sus pensamientos más primitivos, dónde los valores y la moral son una lucha constante, hacen de esta historia mi preferida.

El hecho de que Sophie acepte su amor por Benedict y se acepte a ella misma es más significativo que cualquier declaración de amor antigua. What didn't I like?

One of the biggest criticisms of this story is in regards to Benedict, since, in his desperation not to lose Sophie, and even without knowing that she is the person he has been in love with for years, he offers her to be his mistress. Which offends our protagonist very much.

What the reader usually misses -and I really don't understand why, it seems that he/she has read a different book- is that Sophie, even in the immense sea of opportunities she had to reveal her identity, doesn't do it, which is frustrating. Since Benedict does not throw himself into the void because he tries to keep the hope of meeting again that woman who stole his breath, not knowing that the one he has in front of him and makes him doubt everything, is the same person.

After being rejected the first time, he still clings to her and strives to get a better place for Sophie, with his family, because he hopes to make her happy. After a second, more imposing rejection, that's when Benedict really accepts that he's in love with her, regardless of social differences. And a conversation with his mother makes him understand that he doesn't care what people think about it and sets out to marry Sophie.

The fact that Benedict is determined to leave behind his titles and position in society, makes him a man willing to do anything for the woman he loves. The grandest gesture, and one that no other Bridgerton is willing to make. Anthony and Colin would not have done that “madness”, that's why I don't understand the hate towards Benedict, he was holding on to an impossible love, he was losing everything.

It's not the same position as Sophie, since she grew up aware that nothing belonged to her. But growing up being somebody, striving to be somebody while living through the continual chastisement of society and leaving it all behind for love, is not a decision to take lightly.

That's why I understand a Benedict at her lowest point, the best part is that she only had to go up.

Lo que el lector suele obviar —y realmente no comprendo el motivo, parece que se fuera leído otro libro distinto—, es que Sophie aún en el inmenso mar de oportunidades que tuvo para revelar su identidad, no lo hace, lo cual es frustrante. Puesto que Benedict no se lanza al vacío porque intenta mantener la esperanza de volver a encontrar aquella mujer que le robó el aliento, sin saber que la que tiene al frente y le hace dudar de todo, es la misma persona.

Después de ser rechazado la primera vez, aún se aferra a ella y se esfuerza por conseguir un lugar mejor para Sophie, con su familia, porque alberga esperanza de hacerla feliz. Después de un segundo rechazo más imponente, es cuando Benedict realmente acepta que está enamorado de ella, sin importar las diferencias sociales. Y una conversación con su madre le hace entender que no le importa lo que opine la gente al respecto y se dispone a desposar a Sophie.

El hecho de que Benedict esté decidido a dejar atrás sus títulos y puesto en la sociedad, lo hace un hombre dispuesto a todo por la mujer que ama. El gesto más grande, y que ningún otro Bridgerton está dispuesto a realizar. Anthony y Colin no fueran hecho esa “locura”, por eso no entiendo el hate hacia Benedict, se estaba agarrando a un amor imposible, él perdía todo.

No es la misma postura que Sophie, puesto que ella creció consciente de que nada le pertenecía. Pero crecer siendo alguien, esforzarte por ser alguien mientras vives el escarmiento continúo de la sociedad y dejarlo todo atrás por amor, no es una decisión a la ligera.

Por eso comprendo a un Benedict en su momento más bajo, lo mejor es que solo tuvo que subir.
