The vast majority of people are music lovers, it gives us impulse, it frees us. It is the companion of every moment of our life in different emotions and complements us. We all have preferences, rhythms, styles, singers, bands and genres. There is a great variety of options and the best thing is that we are not limited, we can always choose what we like, and I want to tell you a little of the genre that caught me since I was young, the one that I consume the most and has allowed me to meet a diversity of incredible artists, the R&B.

Todos tenemos preferencias, ritmos, estilos, cantantes, bandas y géneros. Hay gran variedad de opciones y lo mejor es que no estamos limitados, siempre podemos escoger lo que nos gusta, y yo quiero contarlos un poco del género que me atrapó desde joven, el que más consumo y me ha permitido conocer diversidad de artistas increíbles, el R&B.

The history of this musical genre is interesting, but to understand what R&B is, you have to go back to its roots in Rhythm and Blues, which originated in the United States in the late 1930s. The term was first used by the famous "Billboard" magazine in '49 to describe music created by artists with African-American roots that combined styles such as Gospel, Blues and Jazz. However, its first recognized appearances were in the early 40s.

Researching its origins I learned that between 1940 and 1970 Rhythm and Blues bands consisted of a piano, one or two guitars, bass, drums and one or two saxophones, usually accompanied by one or more vocalists. That empowered artists who are now pioneers of the genre, as their lyrics were based on the black community's own experiences as part of American society at the time. That's probably one of the main reasons why it's a genre I consume, I always consider it to be telling a deeper story behind the lyrics and musical instruments.

Related to the youth of the black community, and representative for the lower social classes, it used to be compared to Jazz, the highest status expression in the African American community at the time. This genre is characterized by catchy rhythms, smooth melodies and emotional lyrics. It has evolved over the years from a mixture of blues, gospel, soul and jazz to hip hop, funk and electronic influences.

This indicates that it has undergone modifications in its style and this also influences its denomination. All this has its history, because in the 60's it was known as Blues or Electric Blues and then, in the 70's it lost its identity as a genre to simply group styles such as soul and funk. After the fall of funk in the 1980s, Rhythm and Blues became a mainstay of the American music industry and became known as Contemporary Rhythm and Blues or R&B, as it is known today.

Rhythm and Blues was represented by vocal groups such as The Drifters or The Coasters, soloists such as Ruth Brown and artists such as Ray Charles and James Brown. The wonderful Aretha Franklin -who was the reason I started listening to this genre- and great artists such as Marvin Gaye and Whitney Houston. In the golden age, the greatest exponents were the band Earth Wind and Fire, Tina Turner and Michael Jackson, among others. While Mariah Carey marked an infection in the 90's by being the first female artist to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and the greatest exponent of modern R&B. That, plus the influence of dance and hip hop, made room for Beyoncé and Usher to be mainstays in the genre, and also opened the door for Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna and Justin Timberlake, among others.

R&B is a diverse and emotionally powerful musical genre that has left an indelible mark on the history of popular music. Its ability to evolve and adapt over time makes it an enduring and meaningful musical style. Undoubtedly my favorite, my biggest influences today are artists committed to their music and great talent.
