News and Opinion: May 22, 2022. Nuclear Energy Plant in Michigan Shuts Down
The Palisades Power Plant, which provided with electricity to Southwest Michigan has shut down. It did so a few days ahead of schedule. This was the information provided by Entergy Corp.
The Palisades Power Plant is a 432 acres complex in western Covert Township, Van Buren County, Michigan. It generated around 800 MW of electricity, enough to supply 800,000 homes in Southwest Michigan. 600 people were employed by the Plant.
The closing of this nuclear power plant represents a blow to the the goal of having most of the energy generated be carbon free. Although nuclear energy plants generate electricity with no direct carbon dioxide emissions, they are still considered a non-renewable source. It is interesting to see that in an environment in which energy is becoming more expensive, an important source of energy is being shut down.

Entergy runs a fleet of nuclear power plants. I don't know if any of their facilities are state-regulated. What this means is that, like any other business, they're going to shutdown a power plant if they project it will not make them money in the long run. Shutting the power plant down would save them money in the long run.

Shutting down power plants means shutting down energy sources as well as cutting off employment for some people
Another way to get people to pay more for expensive, green energy. There is a need to ensure the profitability of large corporations, pay off expensive windmills and solar power plants, but, for ordinary people, these costs will never pay off.
