"Waiting for my happy ending I lowered my defenses, forgetting the first lesson of my life: That I came into this world to be abandoned, that I will always be alone "
- Mary Shelley-

Hello Hive friends, today I'm glad to be back to this @moviesonhive community, where we can share important impressions about amazing movies or series that we can enjoy on the small screen or at the cinema. Thank God, we can certainly do it at the movies, after so many months of quarantine.

Today I want to share with you a review or my impressions about a movie I saw a few months ago and which I had forgotten about, but it was something different from the others I have seen and it is based on a true story. This is a movie that you can find on Netflix and its title is 𝕄𝕒𝕣𝕪 𝕊𝕙𝕖𝕝𝕝𝕖𝕪.

🎬 About Mary Shelly

image.png

This is a film premiered in 2017 at the Toronto International Film Festival²,and it has a running time of 115 minutes. It is also important to highlight that 𝕄𝕒𝕣𝕪 𝕊𝕙𝕖𝕝𝕝𝕖𝕪¹ is a co-production between the United Kingdom, United States, Luxembourg, Australia and Ireland, written by Emma Jensen and directed by Saudi director Haifaa Al-Mansour.

Fuente: Imdb.com

𝕄𝕒𝕣𝕪 𝕊𝕙𝕖𝕝𝕝𝕖𝕪 It is a film of romantic cinema, based on real events that includes drama, period stories, because it is set in the year 1813, and also social dramas typical of the period in question.

🎬 The cast of Mary Shelly

image.png

This movie had a select group of young actors as the main characters. Below I will mention which is the main cast² :

Elle Fanning (Mary Shelley): née Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, a 16-year-old young writer who at her young age is an avid writer of an unconventional genre. She is also a feminist influenced by her mother, who was a writer, and her father, also a revolutionary thinking writer and politician. She was the writer of the still acclaimed novel Frankenstein. She became Mary Shelley after marrying Percy Bysshe Shelley**.

Douglas Booth (Percy Bysshe Shelley)}: British romantic writer and poet with revolutionary political ideas and a life of debauchery. He was the partner and later husband of Mary Shelley.

Tom Sturridge (Lord Byron): Character famous in history for his debauchery and scandalous life. Friend of Percy Bysshe Shelley and also poet and precursor of British Romanticism.

Bel Powley (Claire Clairmont): Step-sister of Mary Shelley daughter of her father with Mary Jane Clairmont. She was very attached to Mary Shelley and shares much of the writer's life, which is shown on screen.

Stephen Dillane (William Godwin): British writer and politician, father of Mary Shelley. He was an inspiration to his daughter and encouraged and advised her on her passion for writing

Ben Hardy (John William Polidori): English doctor and writer, who shares the stage with Mary Shelly along with Lord Byron, Claire Clairmont and Percy Bysshe Shelley in a retreat where they decide to make a writing challenge, where some of the participants' great gifts and revolutionary and controversial ideas for the writing of the time come to light.

image.png
Fuente: Imdb.com

⭐ **Ciara Charteris** (*Harriet Shelley*): First wife of Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Maisie Williams (Isabel Baxter): Mary Shelly's friend, with whom she lived for a few months with her family, when Mary's father sends her away from her stepmother and encourages her to develop her true 'self' as a writer. It is in her home that she meets Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Joanne Froggatt (Mary Jane Clairmont): Mary Shelly's stepmother, who demonstrates animosity towards the young writer in the film, with constant offenses and criticism of her mother.

🎬 Mary Shelly's plot

image.png

This movie deals with several controversial topics such as machismo, gender equality, debauchery, ostracism, suicide and death. But despite that, they are not treated in a grotesque or crude way so it is considered suitable for audiences 16 years and older. Mary Shelly is the daughter of writer parents with a liberal mentality regarding the role of women in society on the mother's side and politics on the father's side. She also lives in a home where, despite being loved by her father and siblings, she is mistreated by her stepmother who constantly makes despotic references to her mother.

In view of this situation, her father sends her away to the Baxter family home, where she meets Isabel and later Percy Bysshe Shelley, with whom she immediately establishes a romantic bond. This was the propitious environment for her talent to incubate her most famous novel (Frankenstein). Something that was very controversial in view of the fact that the genre of the novel was somewhat controversial and even more so in the hands of a woman. There is much more to this, but you have to see the movie, I won't get ahead of you.

Despite having a liberal thinking nurtured by her parents' life and relationship, Mary Shelly finds herself at a moral crossroads, when it is her turn to live by the precepts she believed she was defending. For such a reason she is thrown out by her father, whom she considered hypocritical as he seemed to behave in a manner contrary to the ideas she thought she stood for.
she thought she was defending.

Later she herself is questioned when she feels hurt and betrayed by the lifestyle for which she had been thrown away from her family. Despite her contrary thinking at the time she was a noble young woman and loyal to her partner. She had many hard situations in her life from her childhood with the death of her mother and life with a stepmother who despised her, but this was not all. It seems that suffering was part of her life. In fact, that's the most interesting thing because that's what his famous novel is all about, you'll see.

In this film we see not only social dramas but also family dramas and how one's beliefs and convictions are questioned when it is one's own to live. There is much more to unveil, comment and digest, but it would already be spoiler and ruin the novelty for you 😜. So cheer up and watch the movie 𝕄𝕒𝕣𝕪𝕪 𝕊𝕙𝕖𝕝𝕝𝕖𝕪 that you can find right now on Netflix. Here is the official trailer.

Betrayal, death, love, loneliness, painted with colors and dark tones the life of a young woman (Mary Shelley) the simple fact of knowing a little of her story in this film is something sublime and I say it with all the tact and value that it should have.

I have seen countless Frankenstein movies and never came across the need to know the origin of everything and it was thanks to my ex-wife that I was able to see this movie a while ago. I liked the performance of (Elle Fanning) she does very well and continues to do so as in the documentary series The Girl From Plainville she does a good role. I am sure if she polishes herself much more she will be a tremendous actress since she is not even 30 years old.

It is that this was the intention since the story as such of this character is something that at the level of movies, series or one or another book we already know or at least we have a vague information about Frankenstein, but its origin goes beyond what we have seen since it is not the physical or terror that gives life to the character but the moments of madness and suffering that his writer had to live, she was capturing on paper what she lived from very young and how she rose from that dark and lonely grave.

I would like to recommend ** Frankenstein by Mary Shelley** is from the 90's** the style is a little rough, but it leaves you satisfied and is more to give shape to its origins beyond an emotion.

Cheers! @marbrym

While writing about Mary Shelley and doing some research, I stumbled upon 1994's Frankenstein, so I'll soon look for a way to see it grace spot recommendation. Mary Shelley's life and those around her were tragic. Her mother died at 38 or near her husband also and she although a few more years but despite what she suffered in life died young. She had 4 children but was only able to raise one because the others died.

It's amazing everything behind something and what we get to know is like the tip of a pin. thanks for your comment, it was a great contribution 🤗

A very interesting take on Victorian era sentiments and expectations. I comb my used book stores for a earliest edition of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein just to read it in the old Queen's English.
Thanks for sharing @marbrym

Hello friend @kerrislravenhill. It is a true privilege to have such a work within your possessions. Without a doubt you have an invaluable gallery of works of different kinds in your house, that's wonderful. I don't know if you already knew something about the life of this author, I didn't even know about her although I did know about Frankeinstein's novel, but seeing this movie made me want to know more about her and about the people who surrounded her life, a lot of tragedy in her around. In that incredible novel she reflects part of that life.

It is always a pleasure to read you and your contribution is significant. Have a nice day 😘
