Day 88/365: Why Are Many People Unhappy Today?
If you closely observe people and their activity, you will notice that everyone is overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information that is available on the internet today. Even the kids today are scrolling YouTube and watching all sorts of content that excites them. This might seem harmless to many people but our mind was designed in such a way that we don’t even know what things and information get absorbed into it. And, social media is a master tool that eats up people’s minds without them even realising it.
I would like to share my personal experience with you all. I deactivated my Instagram yesterday. And, trust me, I feel so light and relaxed throughout the day. And I realised that I have so much time to do all the stuffs which I wanted to do, but wasn’t able to manage time for because most of my time was consumed by social media. Generally, after a break from any work, we sit and check our phones and start scrolling for 5 to 10 minutes. But we hardly realise when those 5 to 10 minutes turn into 30-40 minutes or more than that and it keeps accumulating every time we start scrolling thinking we’re just taking a “small” break. And the more we scroll, the more information we absorb in our minds.
In my opinion, we don’t need to know all the information and stuff that is happening around the world. For example: Today, everyone is so concerned about what’s going in other people’s lives. That’s what social media is generally all about. Right? But, why do we need to know who just got married, who just had a baby, who had a breakup, or who is travelling around the world? Can we do anything about it? Then why are we so concerned about it?
Recently, I saw a post from someone whom I follow and I admire her work a lot. She was in a relationship for 9 years, and every time I saw their post, I was like, they are such a happy couple and they look so good together. I used to think that a relationship should be like the one they had, but I forgot that only happy posts are shared on social media and we don’t know the story behind the photos and anything about their lives. But, when I read the story of her breakup, I was totally shocked and thought what could have happened! How could people separate after being happy for like 9 years? But, I don’t know them personally, and I don’t know what happened and how their relationship was off the camera. And still I was so concerned. But why? Because my mind consumed all the information I saw and read on social media. Our minds believe whatever we see because we just don’t have the time to check facts and reality. So, we consume whatever is served to us.
After this incident, I realised… sometimes, we don’t need to know all the good or bad stuff that is happening around us. And this is the main cause that many of us are unhappy today because we consume all the stuff served to us through social media.
