The old and new buildings of Galle Fort with wonderful architecture - Part 2
Hi my loving Hivers,
What's up guys? I hope everything are fine for you now. Yesterday was Sunday. So I had free time to reach Galle Dutch fort evening time for recover middle and corner sides. If you couldn't visit my recent achitecture content please read here. I actually thought of ending with two parts on the architecture of Galle Fort. But because of the variety of designed buildings, religious shrines, etc., it was decided to keep space for another content. I am covering the middle region of Galle Dutch Fort. Various jewelry stores, tourist resorts, cafes are commonly seen here.
Different architectural techniques were found even in the adjacent buildings that were built on the same site. The fact that the upper area is made in the same shape as the front of a Catholic church is a proof that it was built during the Dutch era. Cafe hula hula rooftop The building next to the small restaurant had small plants growing on the top wall, but it added some urban decoration. The shape of its upstairs windows is also attractive.
There are several tourist resorts next to it. Called The Bartizan, its entrance had a circular wall at the top. The first floor also had balcony walls that were rounded at the top and squared at the top. The building next to it was black because it had not been painted for a long time. But it can be seen that there is a strange beauty. The area in front of the resort was decorated with green plants.
A security guardhouse was built in a corner above the black building. It must have been built during the Dutch period for security measures as windows were built there. Such security booths are common in Galle Dutch Fort.
Ubesiri & Co Gems & Jewelry, Rampart hotel was next to it, which appeared to be recently constructed buildings. Modern construction techniques were used for this. All designs are recent.
We had the opportunity to see a high-end resort in terms of architecture, like an old Sinhalese upper-class house. The roof arrangement is similar to the ancient Greek architecture. Adding brown paint to windows and modern doors adds to the appeal. Adding white color to the walls and the wall will increase the brightness. Old tiles were used for roofing. Actions were taken to beautify the park.
A restaurant called Pedlars Corner cafe was opened for tourists. Displaying different types of food boards in front of the restaurant is a great help to the guests. It can be imagined from the hand-drawn picture that coconut roti with octopus curry is also provided. From the outside, Pedlars Corner cafe is clearly not an old building. Perhaps the architecture of the old building has been altered and modernized. Upstairs, old lantern-shaped bulbs are arranged.
Looking at the buildings that were built near the road from a distance, it can be seen that they are full of different architectural styles. Most of the roofs here were covered with tiles. Seeing the same type of roof on almost every building is a beautiful sight to anyone's eyes.
The urban planning inside Galle Fort is excellent. Inside here various types of items are sold to tourists by shops. They mostly target foreign tourists. They work to win the attraction of tourists by beautiful light streams, murals, wooden arrangements. Cars are parked on the side of the road and tourists walk along the street. Instead of being concreted with asphalt, the street is covered with brick-style stones.
While we were walking along the street, another attractive building caught my eye. I saw from outside that it sells clothes and jewelry inside. The arrangement and color of light bulbs inside that outlet is unique. Especially when I paid more attention to the white doors, the doors were arranged according to the architectural technique of making windows. The first floor is used for storage purposes.
Sri Lankan traditional wood carvings have been used to fill the space above the window. Animals, flowers and vines are used for these wood carvings. Flower vine pattern has been used for the above carvings.
Nowadays, concrete walls, iron fences etc. are used for the security of many buildings. But at this time, it is surprising to see two gate doors made entirely of wood. But through our exploration we were lucky enough to see such an attractive architecture. The two doors are simple yet attractively finished. The name of this is mentioned as Mansion Villa.
Although Mansion Villa is an old-fashioned building, there is no doubt that it has the attraction of tourists. I can confidently say that this place sparkles at night with less light. The wood carvings in the upper space of the windows are strange to me.
Old buildings with yellow color are also found in the central region of Galle Dutch Fort. The paint has come off in some places.
No matter how old the building is, it is high in strength. The nameplates are the best evidence that these are run as offices of some lawyers. This plave very well suited for wedding photo shoot.
A magnificent building in terms of architecture drew my attention. Painted in yellow and white colors, the building has acquired a strange charm. I stopped at this place for about 5 minutes because I have no words to say about the designs on the walls, doors and windows.
Another villa with yellow and white walls, unique among architecture, was captured by my camera lens. It has got a new shape by renovating an old building. I will say goodbye for now that I hope to introduce the third part of this with the next content.

Oh wow! Amazing tour of historic landmarks @madushanka. Galle Fort must surely encompass an enormous area of Sri Lanka's southern province, right? And there's quite a substantial mix of interesting buildings exhibiting the Dutch and various architectural signatures. I've noticed a fair amount of houses incorporating clay tile roofing materials plus arch-shaped transom windows and doors, distinctive characteristics of Spanish or Mediterranean design influences. 😊 Are there a lot of these features found in other parts of your country?
Yes, there is a considerable mix of interesting buildings in the center of this Galle Fort displaying Dutch and various architectural signatures. A similar architectural technique is also found in the city of Matara in the southern province of our country. I hope to visit there very soon, so I will post about it soon.
Okay I see. Thanks for your interesting feedback! 😊
