Night decorations in our house on the wonderful Vesak Poya day...
Hi my fellow friends, Greetings from Sri Lanka. I hope everything are OK for you now. As I mentioned in yesterday's content, the 15th Sunday of Vesak Poya was the day on which three special events of our religious master Buddha took place. Sri Lankan Buddhists celebrate Vesak for two consecutive days. Therefore, our workplaces are closed under trade holidays. It's important for all citizens to be able to do decorating with small children. Accordingly, I was able to join my daughter and light the night lamps and Vesak lanterns. In fact, young children love to see decorations from the past as part of these cultural elements. I also had experience with that in my childhood. In those days my friends and I would go out together and see the beauty of the night in other houses.
During my wife's leisure time, we did not want to buy lanterns from the market as they were made of bamboo shoots, made into three octagonal lanterns and decorated with colored paper. With the busy schedule of today, some people have to buy Vesak lanterns due to laziness. It is also a waste of money. However, three candles were lit inside our three Vesak lanterns. You can clearly see that light from the photos above. Very thin paper is used to decorate the Vesak lanterns so that the light inside can be seen through. Then I put some coconut oil in the clay lamps and lit them and put them on the wall. It is part of our sacrificial offering.
Lighting bulbs, Vesak lanterns and earthen lamps outdoors was a problem as it was raining from time to time until last evening. Lighting the bulbs was also a problem as there could be an electrical leak. So until the night there was a problem of how to decorate properly. Luckily by 7.30pm the rain had completely subsided. But it is not possible to say that it will not happen again. However, it was a great relief to be able to do all the Vesak decorations in our house in the backyard. Neighbors had decorated the front of their house with suspicion of rain. But we were not afraid to take the risk, so we had the opportunity to make real sacrifices to our religious teachers. I am humbly happy about that. Thanks for visting. See you soon. Have a peaceful day.
