Fascinating architectural features of buildings seen in Galle Pedlar Street.
Hello my fellow Architecture+Design community friends,
Greetings from Sri Lanka. I am always ready to offer you valuable information to draw from every travel experience I make. A few days later I returned to this beautiful community to report on a tour of a street full of beautiful architectural buildings. The architectural features used by building owners to entice tourists and visitors are unique. There are many places to explore the architectural features of Galle city. It is not surprising that a city that has gained special tourist attraction uses different forms. As I see it, every building has a uniqueness that we can take from it. A person's imagination is very important for that. Architectural features that one person sees, another person sees differently. Pedlar Street is a busy area with cement interlocking brick floors and an easy walk.
A commercial bank branch has been built here, which has won the highest position among private banks in Sri Lanka. A mixture of Portuguese and Dutch architecture can be seen in the buildings on this street. The Commercial Bank building looked different just four years ago. As it was not popular with foreign customers, the bank management planned to build it in an old fashioned layout. On the ground floor, arched windows have been set up and in between, shapes similar to Dutch carvings have been created. The white and brown color matches the building perfectly. A different shape is highlighted to the windows on the first floor. It is a slight variation on Dutch architecture. A few small roofs are made in the balcony section above its windows. The secure entrance of the bank is arched with strong wood.
Explore the exterior of a small cafe with mixed architectural elements called Galle Fort Restaurant. Unpainted wood may look old, but it is attractive to architectural explorers. And some foreign visitors see it as a feature that highlights naturalness. The wooden chairs and tables in the front also had an old look that highlighted the naturalness. The ground floor concrete ceiling hanging and wall mounted electric lamps are also attractive. On the top floor, the lantern-shaped Korean and Chinese architecture had added a proportional light bulb shape. All the wooden content of the floor is made to look old.
While walking down Pedlar Street, I came across a recently completed, not yet opened building that looked like a museum. Its roof is covered with modern tiles. The shape of the roof is similar to the shape of the old Dutch shop seen in Matara Nupe. The roof is supported by slightly larger concrete pillars. The shape of the entrance doors is different from the shape of the doors of other buildings.
The construction arrangement of the Bank of Ceylon, a leading state-owned bank engaged in financial affairs in Sri Lanka, is also prominent. Generally, old and new tiles in Sri Lanka are orange in color. Some ornamental trees have been planted in front of the bank. Here the wall is painted light yellow and the windows are painted black. Above the windows there is some carving on the wall.
The next thing that caught my attention was the Fort Bazaar building where the arched windows were being constructed. There was a reason for everyone's attraction to the ornamental plants planted in front of its windows. Even foreigners were taking pictures on Peddler Street. It is a place that offers hotels, restaurants, bars and spa facilities.
CLAN HOUSE, an old building built following old Dutch architectural techniques, was seen on a walk along Pedler Street. Egyptian motifs can be seen on the wall above the arched doorways. Designers of these building constructions have used mixed architectural elements with the objective of attracting visitors. The rectangular shaped windows and doors on the first floor stand out here.
Built in 1763 using Dutch architecture, the Mansion arts and crafts building also has an interesting shape. The fact that the sign of the chicken, the symbol of Galle city at that time, is drawn here shows that it is traditional. On the first floor, the upper windows are made of wooden bars leaving small gaps. I paid special attention to the shape of the pillars that were built to support the roof.
During my trip, I noticed how an old building on Pedler Street in Galle city was being demolished and renovated for a new one. I believe that due to the decrease in attraction, a new building with a different shape will be constructed and a place will be created here in the future to attract visitors.
Interlock bricks are laid on this street making Pedlar Street more attractive and walkable. Another small building with windows made of finely perforated wooden sticks saw a tourist resort. Especially foreigners stay in these places. These old niches are more important to explore for historical value.
In the meantime, we came across another house-like building full of old architectural elements, which is approaching destruction. An old Sri Lankan design can be seen in the windows here. If my memory is correct, we saw this shape in our grandfather's house. That was only 31 years ago.
An open-air restaurant next caught my attention, with another attractive window-shaped window design. Wooden benches and chairs were kept in the outdoor area for natural breeze
In the outdoor area, we came across an attractive cafe that displayed the shape of an ice cream cone planted with ornamental plants. Beverages available for purchase are displayed here.
Several shops have been built to sell jewelery and mannequins in Galle Pedlar Street, incorporating several architectural elements. The use of color on the walls matches well. The old appearance of those buildings highlights the antiquity of the city.
Pedlar Street buildings have little or no gardens, so ornamental plants can be seen planted in pots. Even the delicate shapes used in those small buildings which are not so big are mind blowing.
I could see many buildings with arched entrance windows in my small tour. If these buildings look so strange from the outside, it's hard to imagine how charming the inside will be.
Next, I noticed an attractive shop selling fancy items, antiques, gems and silver jewelery and clothes to foreigners with walls painted in dark yellow. Its entrance is indeed attractive. Two entrances can be seen even from the side. On further investigation, there are two more shops on both sides.
Many buildings that used to be houses on Pedlar Street in the olden days are now running businesses. During that time, I saw an old house that is still used for living then and took a photo.
As I walked down Pedlar Street, I saw many arched buildings. Blended with Dutch architecture, it can be seen as a common feature. This concludes another beautiful architectural exploration. See you in next content.

As we talked about days ago there is a lot of similarity in our countries with the architecture, I really liked the variety of buildings but all of them show a great warmth.
Yes, as you mentioned, architectural similarities could be seen in some of the buildings in our two countries. There is nothing more exciting than exploring them.
