Learning about pollutants and how to save the earth by turning used material into artworks
Hello lovely hivers and home edders. How are you all doing today.
Today I want to share with you a little creative work done by me and my student Jade. This was done in a bid to turn some used non-biodegradable materials at home into artworks. It's a way to protect our environment and save the earth from pollutants. I hope you find this interesting
Children love art and craft. They love adventure, they like trying out things ,they like experimenting and doing things with their hands
While teaching this child about pollution, waste disposal and ways of caring for our environment, we talked about recycling used materials, we talked about how some used materials can be turned into artworks and by doing these we save our environment and protect the ecosystem.
Like every other child out there, Jade can be very inquisitive and curious. She loves art and the practical parts of learning. She wanted us to save the earth(environment), she wanted us to do a practical. she wanted to know how we could turn used material into art.
To satisfy her curiosity and desire, and also to make our lesson much more interesting and fun. We decided to make art from some used material at home.
For our artwork, we used plastic bottle cover. Jade had learnt that Plastics are one of the major pollutants of our environment because they are non- biodegradable ( that is they can not decompose / decay )
and for this reason they fill up dump sites and a lot of them is taken by rain and wind into the ocean.
Recycling or reusing plastic materials is a great way of protecting our environment so we chose to use plastics.
We both set out to look for some plastic bottle covers and gathered all we could find at home. It was quite a fun exercise.
After which we thought of what kind of design we would make. This was another tough time for us. Jade made things a bit difficult. Her thoughts and choice made me laugh. She chose some very complex and almost unachievable designs
She said she wanted us to design a mermaid using the plastic bottle covers. She suggested some other funny and complex ideas which I didn't accept and after long talks and deliberation , we finally decided to make a love shape.
We chose the love design because the reason we are doing this artwork is to demonstrate that we love and care for our environment (earth) and we want to protect it and reduce the way it is been destroyed and polluted everyday.
It took us about two days to do this artwork. Infact we finished in the night of the next day.We used just a few materials and tools for it.
Amongst the tools and materials we used are ;
- scissors
- Ruler
- bottle cover
- glue
- cardboard paper.
Making the artwork was really easy, we first made an outline using the bottle cover. After we had gotten the love shape, we just followed the same pattern and glued the other bottle covers.
As you can see here we used 3 colours for the artwork ; Red, Blue and Yellow.
These colours are called primary colours. We had talked about primary and secondary colours in one of our previous lessons. I had chosen the primary colours so she can get to memorize the primary colours and so she can tell them apart from the secondary colours.
The last thing we did was make Jade's name. She always insists that we add her name as part of every design we make.
Jade was really happy and proud of herself.
You needed to see how she thanked me that day for our little practicals.I was happy too.
I'm always fulfilled when my students understand a topic and when they're happy. I think learning should be fun and I try my best to make is so.
There are quite a lot of advantages of having such activities and exercises with your pupils. Some of which are ;
It creates a bond between you and your pupils : Yes, because of the fact that you spend some exciting time together and work as a team. The pupils begin to bond with you, they get fond of you and love you. Whenever this happens, it's quite easy to pass the information (teach) them because they're so comfortable around you and you can even tell when they're sad.
It makes learning exciting and makes them love learning : Jade has come to love our classes, she always looks forward to our next activity and practical.
It helps the children understand the lesson better
It aids retention and also helps them remember quickly whatever they have been taught
It helps them become more creative and think of new ways to improve and do things
It satisfies there curiosity and makes them happy . This is really important to me and should be a priority to every homeedder . Our children and students should be happy. We should be intentional about making them happy. Happiness rids frustration and makes them love life. This is really important.
Thank you all so much for stopping by . I want to also specially thank this community @homeedders and also I want to thank a new wonderful friend of mine @missdeli
Her comments on my posts was really kind and encouraging. And to everyonee that has contributed their bits to the growth of this community, I say a big thank you, let's keep up the good work.
Home education is Noble and we should not make light of it. The children are the future and should be treated with love and utmost care.
Thanks alot and God bless you all.
Nice work @luckydrums. See how excited that kid is. She will definitely not forget you in a hurry for the smiles you put on her face.
I can tell your lessons with her is very interesting. What a wonderful way to learn about how to prevent polluting the environment
Yeah, our lessons are indeed interesting and fun. Thanks for stopping by I really appreciate it
It looks like Jade had the best time making her project. At first glance I did not realize it was made of plastic bottle caps. Nice work!
Thank you for stopping by. I really appreciate your kind words
I find it amazing how you can make such art with bottle covers. I laughed when I read that your student Jade suggested that you make a mermaid. Children and their imaginations. 😂😂😂 . I really love this concept. Its beautiful.
Thanks alot. Children can really be hilarious. I thought so much about how I could make a mermaid from bottle covers and couldn't figure out how. I had to tell her that we could do it some other time. I couldn't tell her that it's not possible because everything is possible
I'm happy you found yourself comfortable enough sharing more about you and your journey as a home educator/tutor in this community.
We appreciate everyone who's willing to share their knowledge and experiences regarding home education and homeschooling/unschooling things. This is why this place is for.
So yeah, definetely I think we're all happy to read your stories, like this one right here. Great job with Jade, I love to read on recycle and environment topics. You did a great work together! The art piece looks really beautiful!
Thanks alot.
What a good way to teach, using those lids to recycle.
Cheers
