The Daily Bagle at Nottingham
Today we will be taking the slow road to Midlands Meander in Kwazulu Natal, with farmlands, grazing cattle, dams, and farm stores along the way.
I was in search of the best Sourdough bread in the Midlands, when we made a pitstop at The Loos of Blueberry Cafe, a place that took our breath away; we were oohing and aahing at the quaint, stylish, gracious, whatever style you can think of, decor! We enjoyed a scrumptious lunch at this special cafe on Netherwood Farm.
Their deli did not sell baked goods, and I was told the very best Sourdough bread is found at The Daily Bagle in Nottingham Road. I was surprised to see this bakery actually was established in my hometown Durban in 2018!
Temptations there were aplenty, and if I had not just had a big lunch, I certainly would have left this little bakery with way more bags.
I ended up not only buying sourdough bread and rolls, but also walked away with featherlight croissants and pastries, honey candy, smoked meats, and stone ground flour.
First up were spices - Chilli Salt, Seafood Spice, and Braai Salt, all beautifully packaged in tins. Prices started at ZAR60 for a Travel tin, and up to ZAR235 for Gift Sets.
Braai (BBQ) Boxes containing all the spices for the man in charge of the Braai (or BBQ)
Below that was a shelf of Stonelodge Granola - Goji Ginger, Nut & Seed, and Vegan.
A shelf of Millstone Stoneground Artisan Flour for the bakers, and one of those packs went into my basket, which eventually got heavier the further I walked into the bakery.
Ready mixes to make Beer Breads - Chilli & Garlic as well as Olive & Rosemary.
The frozen section had some really tempting foods - frozen sourdough bread and rolls, frozen Beef Fillet Wellington, and even more tempting smoked meats from Dargle Valley Meats - Spinach & Feta Chicken Rolls wrapped in Bacon, Bacon and smoked Sausages, all made from sow friendly Pork.
Wedgewood Handmade Honey Nougat, the very best nougat in the entire SA, my favourite being the Macadamia Nougat, beautifully packed in gift boxes. Of course, I bought a couple of bars of nougat, as the gift boxes were way too costly.
Bread rolls - Sesame Seed and Roasted Onion
Croissants and Choux Pastries to die for - Chocolate, Nuts and Cream; a couple of those went into my basket. The friendly saleslady offered to keep some on the counter, very clever, as it made me pick up more items to fill the basket!
Colourful Macaroons and mini Cheesecakes to die for!
And finally the treasure of the day - my Sourdough bread!
No bakery is worth its salt if there is no Gingerbread Men.
Other tempting cookies were Triple Choc, Peanut Butter, and Ginger.
A last temptation was Honeycomb Rock as well as Caramel Sprinkles, and little Bears with tummies filled with honey, said goodbye to us before we hit the road back home.
This has been my contribution to the lovely @dswigle's Market Friday, sooo glad you're back Denise, wishing you a very speedy recovery!
Happy Market Friday everyone!

Small town bakery with all the tempting treats, day drives to the region we normally do when up that way.
Everything appears to have "Take Me Home" stickers on them!

So right Joan, we still want to visit the cheese farm up that way and stop at Rawdons to visit the brewery again, we've not been there for years. One wonders how those places survived during Covid.
Have a great Sunday Joan, I see there was sardine frenzy in Toti!
Cheese farm close to Underberg, River Glen closed their door a place we stopped off regularly to buy before coming home. Sad how many are gone not from Covid but attitude and mood in the country toward farmers.
Sardine run is in full swing, hopefully some reaches the poor to feed them.

What a nice wander-about this day! I'm in!!! I love bagels and sourdough bread!! The Daily Bagle was quaint and I wanted this to be the place where I have coffee and bagels when I go out!!! Can we go back there again when we don't need sourdough? It looks like it has great potential to make me love it!
How far is it from your house?
I was so enamored with the Wedgewood boxes, I looked them up on the internet, but, sadly, they are only in SA. Probably better that way. No temptation. Although I do love the Macadamia Nougat. As my grandfather would always say: "It's good to want something." Ha!
I love my bagels with everything on it. Throw it all on, it is best in that messy state. What is your favorite bagel?
I have to say that this was such a delightful trip with you. I scroll and scroll, trying to decide what I like best. Everything... right down to those ginger men and honey bears! There is no use denying it! Thank you for taking us with you. That was fun and it was a delicious break! ❤️ Anytime you are up for it, I will go again!!! Thank you!
#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.
Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday
