The bottle of whisky worth nearly £1000
The Nikka Taketsuru 21 Year Old is one of hubby's prized possession, and a week ago this bottle was worth nearly £1000.
Hubby has had this bottle for many years, and originally it cost him about £60 when he bought it from Japan. There's a reason why it's so expensive, let me tell you.

For those who are not familiar with Japanese whisky, Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka Whisky is known as the father of Japanese whisky. In 1918 Masataka went to Scotland to study chemistry and to learn to produce whisky. During his stay there, he mastered the skills from some of the best whisky distilleries and returned to Japan two years later with his newly wed Scottish wife, Rita. Over the years, Masataka was the pioneer in developing the Japanese whiskey industry, and eventually opened his own distillery and produced his first bottle of Nikka Whisky in 1940.
The Taketsuru was named in honour of Masataka. The label at the back talks about his desire to produce the best whisky for the Japanese and his desire to achieve that dream. The pure malt 21 Y.O combines his love of whisky and his wife Rita, hence the image of the couple.
In the past decade or so, Japanese whisky has become very popular. Many of them have picked up international accolades, fueling the demand from around the world, particularly from certain Asian countries. So much so, that the demand quickly outstrip supply, and many of the aged whisky was totally sold out. By 2019, various Japanese distilleries announced they had to discontinue certain products, including those as young as 12 years.
With the Nikka Taketsuru 21 Year Old being much older, its fate was also sealed, and what was left on the market became a rarity. Hence driving the price up.
So what does a £1000 bottle of whisky taste like? And is it worth it? For those who has read my whisky posts before, you'll know I don't drink whisky. I won't even buy a £10 bottle of whisky, let alone a £1000 one!! So I asked the whisky connoisseur at home for his opinion.
Hubby's opinion is that it definitely is a very good whisky, very smooth as one would expect from a 21 year old. He thought it had a hint of plum flavour, but his drinking buddy, ie my brother in law who drank with him, couldn't taste that. As to the current price tag... I'm glad to say hubby hasn't lost his mind, and won't be paying £1000 for a bottle. Phew!
In his opinion, the true value of his prized possession is sharing a very good bottle of whisky with his drinking buddy after dinner, or a dram by himself at home.

It was always a drink that aroused the most curiosity in my youth. Associated with moments of relaxation after a hearty meal, or a moment of relaxation with friends, in a bar with live Portuguese music. Currently, I think I haven't drunk whiskey for over 10 years! Outings with friends have become a rarity, and since I tend to take the car with me when I go to these dinners, the consumption of a hard drink is completely out of the question for me.
In any case, we can tell from the quality of the bottle, as well as the deep golden color, that we are looking at an exceptional whiskey! I confess that I would like to take a sup, just to taste such a precious liquid!
Luckily for him, I don't drink, so he's always got a driver when we go out!! Have you stopped drinking all together, or is it mainly because you have to drive afterwards?
I can say that not only because of the driving issue, but I think it came with age... I no longer have the "taste" to drink when I was a young inconsequential university student... Ahahah
Nowadays, I drink a lot occasionally, and mostly with meals (only on the most special occasions). I noticed that my body "works" better without alcohol... Although I like and value a good red wine or a beer that stands out from the rest.
The young and carefree student days! It seems such a distant past for so many of us ^_^
Ooft - that's one heck of a bottle! Nice !!!!
He's really chuffed about it, as it's been sitting in Taiwan for three years whilst we're in UK, and it's only recent that we were able to go back to Taiwan to collect it
Isn’t that incredible? We once drunk some vintage wine that was worth hundreds of pounds. My word it was something else, wow.
You know what I can remember it now it was so good.
Wow!! It must have been really good to leave that lasting impression on you. The nearest I've come to tasting something so good was a pomelo grown on a 50 year old tree. That, I can still remember was sooo good.
Hubby was gifted got a bottle of red wine that's worth about Euro300 now. But it's been stored in Taiwan for three years and he's worried it might have gone bad in the heat.... we'll know soon during our next dinner gathering with his drinking buddies
Hopefully it’s survived, would be a crying shame if it hasn’t
That's quite something. Some would say he's crazy to drink it, but think those who pay that much are crazy. My neighbour was given some bourbon that turned out to be worth a lot, but he drank it anyway and enjoyed it. I had some and it was nice enough. I just wouldn't pay that for any drink.
He was never going to sell it anyway (though if it's worth 10k, that'd be another story!!), and how often can you say you've drank a £1k whisky.
I think it's madness if someone pays £1k for a bottle, but then I guess there are still some people with too much cash and nothing better to do, or love to show off in front of their friends!!
There's plenty of rich people with more money than they know what to do with. I'm not impressed by big spenders unless they actually do some good with their money.

That was a good investment indeed @livinguktaiwan! I will rather stick with a glass of wine😉
Or rather an unintended investment! Not that £1000 isn't a lot of money, but if it was worth a lot more, we'd definitely be selling it!
That's awesome, bought it for $60 and now it's worth that much, jealous!
I do actually have some whiskey as a Vest, but that's stored elsewhere!
Love a good whiskey, now I might have to go buy a decent bottle, but hell no, not $1000, I always just buy whatever single malt is 30% off in Sainsbury, there's always one!
That sounds familiar, but Tesco as @bingbabe works there and I get a 10% discount!
The supermarkets always seem to have some good deals on. Hubby always makes sure to walk all the way to the end of the store to browse down the aisle when we're there.
About 10 years ago, he saw an aged Japanese whisky at Tesco for about £30 but he didn't buy it. Then we got home, and he kept on thinking about how a very good deal it was, and he went back again and bought two bottles. Think they appreciated quite a bit afterwards as it was one of those that were discontinued as well
Actually they are always right at the back aren't they - high value items I guess.
I will have to start paying more attention. I haven't actually bought a bottle of whiskey for a while, overdue maybe!
Id savour every last sip of that bottle 😂😂...
Can you imagine... Every sip is probably worth 1-2 pounds 😂😂😂
DAYUM
I guess it does work out pretty expensive per sip at that price. I tasted a little with the tip of my tongue, just so I can say I've tried it!!
So cool… what a history the bottle has. Scotland 😉 very cool.
It’s nice to share it with friends and really enjoy something special, whatever the price.
Scotland is a mecca for whiskey lovers, hubby and brother in law wants to do a whisky tour up there later this year, hopefully that will be a nice getaway for me and my sister as well
Wow!
A better investment than HBD. I guess your hubby has 100’s of friends when that bottle is out
Once in a blue moon good return. If it's worth a lot more than a grand, I'll definitely be selling it for him even if he doesn't want to!!!
😂 😂 😂
It's even better that he has allowed himself to enjoy the whiskey. So often I hear of folks who have collectibles, but never enjoy it for themselves.
Yes, I hear those stories as well, as if people buy collectables for the sake of value appreciation, rather than appreciating the item, like toys that are kept sealed and boxed forever and the owner never gets to even touch the item. Sometimes life is too short to not indulge yourself with things you like
Sell, sell!! :)))
Too late 😭
Ahahah well then... bottoms up! It's worth the sacrifice! ;)
Dare you to print off and stick that label onto a cheap bottle of whiskey and mix it with coca cola infront of him.
oohhhh!! that will be fun!!!!

This might be one of the most valuable whiskies I've ever seen. Of course, it has value because of its taste, but mainly because of its rarity. If you keep it for just 10 more years, I'm sure it will worth more than double in value.
Mainly rarity, like all things. If it was a lot lot more valuable, I'll be selling it now rather than let him drink it
Wow, I can't even imagine 21 years old. I think the oldest whiskey I have ever had was a 12 year old bourbon. Maybe 15, but I don't think that is accurate. This looks like it is a great treat and what a great deal on the price. It has really appreciated well for him! Thanks for sharing!
He's been waiting for three years to get his hand back on it, as it was stored in Taiwan and we couldn't go back there to get it because of Covid. Now, he's a happy bunny!!!
That is good. I haven't tried any Japanese whiskys yet. I imagine they are quite similar to Scotch and I am still trying to find a feel for Scotch.
Wow, that a lot... and finally not that much compared to some other fine beverages ! Thanks for sharing all that history about Masataka Taketsuru, I didn't know anything about him or his trajectoire ! I like the tasting philosophy of your husband, I tend to feel and do the same. Like it's not about the price in money, but more the price in the moment's quality !
I hear some fine red wine can be very expensive as well.
Yes, sharing and experiencing is definitely more important here because he'll never get another chance to try something like this.... unless he forks out £1000 to buy a bottle, or we win the lottery, or another bottle appreciates to the same value... none of that I can see happening 😀
Yes, I have had some great bottles and only found out the price later... They were my girlfriend's grandfather's wine bottles and I must say that for some of them I was "almost" shocked, in fact he had bought them years before when they were very reasonably priced... But as you say, the most important thing is to share, because I imagine that there must be rich people who drink prestigious bottles in a bad atmosphere and more modest people who have a better time with a less famous wine..!
