(Not) My succulent garden

The other day when I went over to my sister's to have my hair done, I had a snoop around at her collection of plants.

I'm told succulents are quite easy to grow. A couple of years ago she gave me two strings of pretty pearls but sadly they died within a week 😟. I swear I looked after them as instructed, maybe succulents and I are just not meant to be. Her's on the other hand look so healthy and bubbly.

My sister has got loads of different types of succulents and told me the names of each one. She's pretty knowledgable about them all and has so many different types that it's like a succulent store. I wonder if that's common for succulent owners, that they keep on adding to their collection. And if that isn't enough, she also propagates more so they keep on growing and growing.

I fortot all the names she told me, apart from this one. She said this is called mother of thousand tongues, which to be honest, I think it's quite an ugly name. The tongues are those little bits on the edge of the leaves.

And she's propagated more little baby ones from the tongues leaves.

I like this wheelbarrow planter as it's big enough to design a mini landscape garden and you can easily move it around the garden. I think my sister didn't put much thought into the design!! It looks like she just plonked different succulents in it!!

However, I think she did well with this one. It's is a great way to reuse old broken pots instead of throwing them away. She said the pot broke, so she turned the broken piece into two pereimeters. The cascade effect is lovely but I think it would be even more prettier if she added a dash of different colour and some strings and let it dangle over like a waterfall. Anyway, good job on her for creating such a nice piece.... says the person who can't keep succelents alive😃

Maybe I'll go and get some proper lessons from my sister one day to learn how to grow succulents. Some of them are so pretty and their miniature size looks so cute. Hopefully the next time I make a succulent post it will be about my own plants.

Wow 🤩 She has quite a nice collection :)

The one called thousand tongues is also named « mil hijos » in Spanish, maybe it will sounds better for you :D Family type : Kalanchoe

In truth, it’s not that hard to multiply, but having some learning sessions with your sister seems a good idea too !

Have a nice weekend 🌱

That is an impressive succulent garden. I really love the pretty pearls. I do not have a large collection but I love what I have as they have been around for a long time. My daughter would like to start her succulents garden again - your post motivated me to get a few I see her including the pearls. Thank you.

I'm sure you grow to love your plants if they have been around for a long time, just as you love your children, and hopefully you daughter will start her own collection with some encouragement from yourself.

Yes indeed you are correct-she has. After seeing my succulents and garden she asked for another chance.😀

Oh I love those plants, the best thing is that they can be planted in almost every thing, dont need a normal plant pot.
Carina for plants seems to be in your family genes :-)

I'll get my act together to start growing some, I can nearly envisage them sitting on my window sill, it looks so pretty

A lovely post and your sister is correct, as succulents are trouble free plants that look after themselves. We also have many here and they grow in the wild all over South Africa.

Marian (my wife) likes the smaller ones like this.

And I like the bigger ones like this.

So yes, you have a good thought to start growing your own, as they give one much pleasure to look at every day.
They are easy to grow and one just has to be careful to plant them in the correct soil with easy drainage.
I also forget the names of the succulents, but there is a library on Hive that I always ask for the names if on occasion I post our succulents. The library's name is @ewkaw !LOL

I think I'm with Marian, I like the smaller ones, especially if I can dot them around in the rooms. I'm going to look for some pretty containers because once I find them, I will want to fill them with some nice plants! Task for next week 💪

I don't blame you as the small ones are cute and lovely and they add a lovely character to the rooms.
Looking forward to your post once it is done 😉

How clever your sister is, reusing the broken pot to grow succulents. They look even better in my opinion.

I liked that rustic look, very original! And luckily the pot was large enough to do that.

I love what she did with the broken pot. Nobody would think she was recycling it cos it was broken. If you didn’t say, I’d think that was the plan all along.

The mother of a thousand tongues name is funny though. I have a very vulgar mind and let’s just say it went out of the box for a minute😅 I honestly thought you were going to say it too when you said you thought the name was ugly.

That is quite the succulent garden. So many great varieties in there. I've never heard of the "mother of thousand tongues" before. It's an interesting name for an interesting looking plant. Lol
