Where History and Architecture merge: Part I/ Donde se funden Historia y Arquitectura: Parte I
Hello friends of Arquitectura + Diseño, today I bring for you a spectacular place, one of those that most marks the identity of my country, it is impossible to talk about Cuba without mentioning the Morro, which like a great sentinel, is guarding the entrance of the Bay of Havana for over 400 years. I wanted to show it to you a long time ago but it had been difficult for me to go to it, but taking advantage of the fact that I visited a very close place, La Cabaña on the occasion of the Book Fair, I could not avoid going to it.
Actually this great building is called the Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro, it is for me one of the places where you can appreciate the most beautiful views of the bay of Havana and its entire coastline with that splendid boardwalk where so many Cubans and foreigners They have dreamed, cried and laughed. The construction of the Castle began in 1589 and was completed between 1630 and 1640, historians have not been able to specify the exact date, the delay in its construction was partly due to the highly irregular rocky terrain.
It is a bastioned fortress that has a polygonal shape and in 1783 it was necessary to rebuild it after the damage caused by the English attack, for its construction was used carved stone and masonry. The main purpose of this construction was to protect Havana from pirates and invaders.
I had this picture of the boardwalk saved, because I always had the idea of going to the Morro and this view is only obtained from this side of the bay hahaha, is where you can see better that rocky ledge, which is only accessible by sea. When at night we sit down to rest on this wide wall, the light emitted by the lighthouse runs along it. There are two flashes of light every 15 seconds and its main function today is to guide ships to the entrance of the bay.
.
.
El Morro, is currently a tourist site to receive visits from Cubans and foreigners, since I was a child I have been there countless times and I have always found it very exciting, as if I were traveling back in time, as its walls keep a great legacy of history. When we approach this fortress it seems that we are entering another century, from it you can see the oldest and most modern part of Havana.
By land is accessed after crossing the Bay Tunnel at the exit turn right, upon arrival there is a wide staircase with railings, these were currently placed, I would have liked more wood, this staircase leads to a narrow bridge not very long, which if it has wooden railings. Under the bridge is the large moat without water but deep that prevents access to the castle. In the visits to the place, you can access through that entrance, but as there was a lot of public, due to the fair, I was not allowed and I had to turn around and access through the rear entrance, but do not worry I will show you everything.
Before bordering it, I will show you everything that can be seen from the esplanade in front of this access area. It is surrounded by straight stone walls with lookouts at the ends in different directions, one towards the bay, one towards the city and the other two towards the open sea, so that any ship that appears on the horizon can be seen.
To the right, a little away from the entrance at the end of the building, is the defense area facing the sea, where you can see holes to place the cannons, here I show you one next to the wall and another group a little further away in alignment for defense.
.
Skirting around the entire building to the left of the entrance, this being the inner part of the bay, you come to a back entrance, up a slope. Then there is a barred gate and you go through a small tunnel, the ramp continues to slope steadily and as I climbed I peeked over the wall because it revealed a great view.
Before continuing my ascent I took beautiful pictures of the Bay, also from this position you can see the battery of cannons that in its beginnings were twelve, which are located in the back of the current Restaurant La Divina Pastora, which formerly was the factory for the gun carriages of the cannons. These cannons were the main shield of protection against threats that the bay had.
I continue my ascent up the ramp, passing near one of the lookout points of the bay and reaching the highest point where there is a large arched entrance, with exterior lanterns. From that point if we go towards the wall we can see the whole ceramic roof of the aforementioned Divina Pastora that contrasts with the stones of the side walls of the castle and of course the whole Bay in its splendor.
To the right of the arched entrance there is a small rectangular entrance that leads to a passageway with small windows on one side, looking through the windows you can see the thickness of the walls, occurring throughout the fortress as it was a defense system, this passageway is painted completely white and the floors are made of stone, leads to the main entrance through the land area where the moat is, where I could not pass, but turning around I did the tour in reverse arriving at the starting point.
So far I leave you with my tour of the exterior of this majestic castle showing its usefulness and importance, it is a seal of Cubanness. In the next post I will show you the interior of the building and its wonders. Greetings to all, see you soon.

Greetings dear @lileisabel, certainly a place with much to tell and observe, visit these buildings allow us to know part of the history of our ancestors, you know? has much similarity with the Castillo San Antonio de la Eminencia de Venezuela (Cumana), being in the bay looks spectacular and offers a beautiful landscape.
Happy and blessed day!
Hello dear @belkyscabrera, I imagine that the Spanish have carried out this type of building throughout America in their conquests, hence the similarity, they really were very durable buildings that contain a lot of history, greetings and thanks for stopping by 👋👋
@lileisabel I liked an excellent fortification, how many stories will be stored in its walls? El Morro Castle is an architectural jewel that represents a source of tourism for the Cuban brothers and definitely a cultural and tourist heritage, which can be evidenced by the number of visits it receives from natives and tourists or through its representation in the coins of national circulation of Cuba where you can see some castles including the hill, thank you very much for sharing dear friend, Blessings !!
Yes friend @armasdiaze, you are absolutely right, this place is very visited by Cubans and foreigners, I have been countless times and I never tire of going through those thick walls, it is fantastic, regards 👋
It is a really incredible fortress, I love stone constructions. You are absolutely right with the title of the post, through architecture you can talk about history.
That's how it is dear @doriangel because behind each architectural style there is a story, these stone walls speak for themselves
Beautiful images you took. The whole place is beautiful. I really liked everything you write describing the place.

The fortress-shaped building was built very strong to defend against enemy attacks, but what makes me salute is that behind the strength that is in the building they also make it with an extraordinary beautiful design and architecture
If it is a restaurant, it is currently called La Divina Pastora, in the past it was a factory to make cannon carriages, it is also a beautiful building 😉
