Hairdressers' Alley in Havana / Callejón de los Peluqueros en La Habana

Imagen17.png

Hello friends of Architecture & Design, I want to show you a place that I arrived almost by chance, I did not know it existed, actually I was going to the Museum of Music, because I wanted to show it to my son, it is a very nice place, but with the pandemic, most of the museums are still closed, nothing has returned to be like before at least here in my country and still not all places of public affluence are open, but looking for someone to give me a reason I turned to see from the side and I came across this magical place a few steps away from me and I could not help but approach it. In this post I used some photos of my son @demoad taking advantage of the fact that he was next to me and he is a very good photographer.
It is a small and narrow street, but with so much art gathered in it that it is a pleasure to walk and be a little bit around there, it is located in the Santo Angel neighborhood one of the oldest in Havana, it starts right in front of the Havana Bay Tunnel, on Aguiar Street between Peña Pobre and Misiones Avenue is a small block and cobbled, I will show you everything I saw in the place, it has a very nice design.
When I saw such a beautiful place I started to investigate because I am a lover of Havana streets and I had never seen it and according to what I read in the bibliography that I will leave at the end of the publication, all the renovation of this place happened in 1999 when Gilberto Valladares Reina, better known as "papito", a local hairdresser, got the City Historian Eusebio Leal to pay special attention to the place.

Just before entering the alley, there is a giant scissors, I think there is no better element to identify this attractive alley. The place starts with a hairdresser-barber shop museum, being this the reason why this space was created, I must say that it was closed and I could not visit it, but the place is so picturesque that it did not spoil my mood, it has paintings, cafes, bars, sculptures, many plants, it is a whole block (100 meters) squandering art at every step.

The alley is semi roofed because in each section there are several canvases or stretched forms of different colors that are attached to the balcony railings and metal supports that are under the balconies of the second floor, I really like those metal structures under the balconies, sometimes they are visualized is a pity that many are not seen by the tarpaulins. In addition, there are rows of light bulbs that cross the entire street in the form of zipizape under the tarps. This gives a bohemian air to the place.

Just after the museum there is a small park with 2 or 3 benches and several pots and decorated flowerbeds where all the vegetation is planted. Among the large pots, small tables and tall iron chairs, the floor is all cobblestones like the rest of the place, as well as the lighting with strings of light bulbs.

There are interesting graffiti, all related to the barber and hairdresser trade, as you can see there are on the lower walls, but some reach up to the second floor, these paintings were signed by Victor Mora and @rocblackblock. As well as different sculptures and works of art made in wood, iron and ceramics that adorn the walls of the striking alley.

Imagen16.png

Under the canvases in the center there is furniture that varies according to the establishments and on the sides, where at some point should have been the sidewalks that were removed to expand the cobblestone promenade, there are dissimilar pots with vegetation everywhere, it is very nice that green touch that in that part of Havana, where in its streets is missing a lot.

I entered a Bar-Restaurant whose name is El Fígaro, its walls reflect paintings by the aforementioned Cuban artist Víctor Mora, I really liked the style of the place, the brick walls that I was told many were replaced in the restoration because the walls were badly damaged by time, but preserving the structure of columns and arches, as well as the wooden beamed ceilings. There is one side wall that is only repainted. The floors preserve the mosaics from the colonial era, which were also restored. The lamps in this area hang from planks between which there are branches of artificial plants, it reminded me of the tobacco drying sheds in the Cuban countryside, it seemed original to me.

The bar of the place is white and simulates small canteritos and has 3 high chairs of different colors carmelite, pink and yellow, inside the place there are very few tables and chairs, most are on the outside and both the tables and chairs have paintings of the artist and are of different colors as the chairs of the bar.

Imagen14.png

Arriving at the corner there is another small Bar-Restaurant with a totally different style, it has a main door and three more doors, in the small local so it has no windows, it is all made of wood including the ceiling, because it is only a mezzanine, there is a second floor in the restaurant, it also has a wooden bar. The interior furniture are small tables and varnished wooden benches. But the exterior furniture are the iron and marble tables and the iron chairs and the upholstered back and backrest with a lining on the back that simulates the old barber seats.

Well friends here I finish showing you what I could appreciate of this alley a very unique place of this warm Havana with a lot of art and good taste, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. See you to continue sharing beautiful places with incredible designs.

I had the opportunity to go to Havana in 2012, I was amazed by its architecture, especially the capitol and its 5-star hotels, its drinks, the bucanero beer or the Havana club rum, it brought back beautiful memories, thanks for sharing. @lileisabel

Hello @lileisabel. What a beautiful alley, filled with many wonderful surprises and experiences for the senses! I'd obviously have my hair groomed there if I happened to be nearby.

Not only will I enjoy my time at the barbershops but also get an exquisite taste of its other attractions but most especially its impeccable architecture. Thanks for showing us this iconic landmark from Cuba! 😊

Thank you very much dear @storiesoferne how glad I am that you enjoyed as much as I did, that nice little corner hidden in this immense city, you can truly breathe a lot of art and good taste at every step and as is characteristic of this part of the city, very well preserved all the details of colonial architecture.
