The Spanish Steps. How time flies in 28 photographs.

Hey there, travelers of the world and especially those of you who had the chance to see and touch the beauty of Europe :)

Let me share with you my visual memories, feelings and observation about this lovely place, one of the famous tourist landmark at the capital of Italy, Rome <3, called:

The Spanish Steps

Why do you think it is called this way? Well, the answer to that potential question is rather trivial and could easily be found just with a couple of clicks of your mouse or touch screens :)
Moreover, a hint could be the steps could be found at "Piazza di Spagna" or "Square of Spain" ;)

IMG_0732.jpg

It was a rather cold day at the time I visited it. Still, you could see for yourself the place looks a bit overcrowded.

Here is another angle, from the street below:

IMG_0715.jpg

To put it that way, if you are not a fan of crowded open spaces, well, this location is probably not going to become your favorite. However, even if you are in favor of quiet places, you still are going to be magically attracted to take some time to rest, sitting on those white steps with quite irregular shapes and curves, like the sea waves, or probably those of the famous river, flowing through and dividing the Eternal City.

True, as I tell this from my own experience. Usually, I prefer to constantly walk through the places I visit, so I cover for more angles and perspectives and see more city life scenes. Here, though, I spent a significant amount of time to reflect, or call it, to meditate on those steps. Siting beside these many strangers, I could see not all of them were tourist. Many were students, some groups of friends, having probably chit-chats after work, hopefully exchanging some ideas about how to make life better. Or discussing Art ideas? Yep, the place would push me do that, definitely :)

It was even fun and pleasure to watch those patiently waiting in a queue to take selfies at the fountain at the base of the steps:

IMG_0717.jpg

The place felt somehow old and modern, at the same time, lively, I must say. With hundreds of people of all ages, meeting there or just walking by.

IMG_0718.jpg

Getting there could be a challenging task sometimes. Thankfully, I am a tall guy, hehe, and I always find some referral points and I rarely loose orientation :)

IMG_0721.jpg

It is really awesome and kind of magical how such places could change their "soul" within seconds.

IMG_0728.jpg

From the guy, waiting for his loved one with a bunch of roses, next to the street performer and the other guy, holding his selfie stick, to the four couple of friends, speaking different languages and moving into four separate directions. That all, in just a few seconds difference!

IMG_0729.jpg

Would you sit on those steps yourself?

Hundreds of questions pass my mind. Questions like.. "What's in the heads of these beautiful girl and boy, sitting on the third row and looking into opposite directions?"

"Are they sad, or mad at each other, or probably dreaming about something distant?"

IMG_0731.jpg

"Why are they not taking to each other?"

"Oh, is she just eavesdropping on that energetic couple at her right-hand side?"

It's good they are not noticing me I am taking photos of them! :) As there are tens of other persons also holding cameras and clicking, clicking...

Time really flies here, so let's step up and take a few looks around...

The evidences of past times and glory:

IMG_0738.jpg

There is no age for true love...

IMG_0739.jpg

Those views from the top terrace are so beautiful, that again, more time passes by while standing there and enjoying the scenes and the air

IMG_0744.jpg

IMG_0740.jpg

IMG_0745.jpg

Yes, that's the Vatican City, that could be seen in the background.

Some "pictures from an exhibition".

Quite an artistic place, I must say!

Steps, connecting people:

Admiring the talent of the architects of that City (a city with a capital letter), again and again...

IMG_0753.jpg

IMG_0755.jpg

IMG_0756.jpg

IMG_0754.jpg

Then only a few meters away from all that beauty and glory, just like a finish to that enchanted place, I ran into this cozy and typical, sympatico scene, emphasizing the warmth of Italy <3

Happy travels, friends!

Hi, @peakd and @jarvie, I just noticed this strange bug:

Screenshot (1).png

I refreshed the page a few times, F5 and CTRL+F5, but it continues to show that number, and that's not the case definitely ;)

Thanks in advance for looking into that issue!

I don't know if more time is spent there in observing the people around - this huge multitude of people, connected to each other by invisible threads, but still representing individuals with their unique fates, joys and sorrows. Or more time is taken to feel the very place that has drawn you like a magnet there, because there is no way to visit Rome and not go to the Spanish Steps.
I myself happened to be there twice and I don't like overcrowded places and hyper famous tourist landmarks as I have already said many times but you are absolutely right that this site attracts in a magical way and it is not possible to not sit there. It's impossible not to stay there for a while...
Thank you for the awesome post! It took me back years and really transported me to this wonderful country and this amazing city.
P.S. I too noticed this strange bug with the word count. I hope @peakd will get it fixed in time.

Not a fan of crowded places but it's lovely to see the photos shared. People watching is an interesting hobby. I wouldn't mind getting lost in the crowd and probably sit on the steps to rest too. I'd love the chance to travel to Europe someday. Happy week ahead!

Thank you! I'm not a fan of the crowds either :)
You're right though, being inside the crowd gives you an opportunity to observe people without being noticed, much more comfortably this way :)

It is, thanks so much for stopping by :)
Italians have passed some time ago a strange law that now prohibits people from sitting on the steps :)))

Visiting a place and photographing it as best you can - with or without a professional camera is one thing, but looking at the professional photographer's wonderful photos of places you've been is a unique experience. Just as unique as it is to read about other people's experiences in these same places. Thank you for this generously provided opportunity! ❤️
