Dragoman Swamp experience

Greetings travelers and nature explorers!

I am grateful to have had the lovely opportunity to visit Dragoman Swamp or as it is tagged on the online maps, Dragoman Marsh in Western Bulgaria and it was truly a spectacular experience. The lake is located in a remote, mountainous region and is surrounded by forests and terrain that promised some beautiful scene. The swamp itself is quite large and it looked as it is fed by several small rivers, some of them hidden by the bulrush, creating a unique ecosystem hosting a large variety of wildlife.

The initial plan was to go there for some birdwatching and hopefully, catch a few wonderful bird action photos. Well, that didn't go as planned, probably because the time of the visit was not early in the morning when the birds are the most active.

Not all parts of the lake could be visited for two reasons. First, it is a protected area. Second, these wooden bridges cover only a small part of the lake, and that's where the bird watchers usually go as there is a observation deck that implements some spying features, hehehe.

That info board gives some short history and sponsors info. European Counsel and five local organizations. Probably important but a bit boring to read. Zero info about the fauna or flora here. Probably I missed another info board on the way here.

One of the things that inspired me the most about Dragoman Lake was its natural beauty. I instantly fell in love with the reeds in the sunlight with the trunks of dead trees, I could tell birds love to rest here, well, at another part of the day, obviously, and the surrounding mountains and forests provided a picturesque backdrop. I was also struck by the tranquility of the area. Despite the remote location, there were very few people around, I think we've met only that couple of young people around and the only sounds were coming from the pale wind and the distant chirping of birds.

So very beautiful. Stunning. What would you say?

I spent most of my time at the lake simply taking in the scenery and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. However, I took advantage of the opportunity to just relax and chill out. As the birds were away, not much time was spent in the bird observation deck. It has too small "windows", I guess so people are not so easily seen by the birds around. Walking all those wooden bridges was so pleasant. There were one two wooden benches to sit as well.

These were the only traces of human structures I was able to see from the swamp. It feels really distant and isolated.

In addition to the natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere, I was also impressed by the photographic opportunities at Dragoman Lake. The lake and surrounding landscape provided endless opportunities for stunning landscapes, bird and wildlife photography. The lake is also known to be a great spot for night sky photography, where the clear skies and minimal light pollution makes it an ideal spot for capturing stars and Milky Way.

Why do you think I am showing you this photo below:

That's because the insects were waiting in line for that particular wild flower :)

Everything was so so beautiful here:

And hey, just before leaving this scenery place, we got checked out by a few locals :)

Overall, my visit to Dragoman Lake was an unforgettable experience. The natural beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and excellent hiking and photographic opportunities made it a truly special place. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an adventure in the great outdoors.

That really is stunning scenery. I am used to seeing bogs and wetlands. After all Estonia is 22.7% covered with these but I dont really see a swampy land with mountains. Thats beautiful.

Thank you :) Oh, I didn't know that, I suppose there are interesting birds to photograph then. And plenty of moody landscapes during the "colorful" parts of the day and when there are fogs. I hope I have the opportunity to spend some proper time exploring the Baltic countries.

Indeed, I underhand that too! Being in nature reconnects us to our own life energy, which then begins to flow far better, so yes, it's youthening! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙
