At Piazza del Campo with the stunning Torre del Mangia

avatar

Piazza del Campo is the biggest square in the old center of Siena, a beautiful big city in the region of Tuscany, in Italy.

Prior visiting it, I've seen lots of photos from it, and I already knew it is generally used for the biggest celebrations, folklore events, I've seen those stunning images of horse races.

I wouldn't share my experiences from visiting this place without telling about the Torre del Mangia, as the square and the tower go hand in hand and I don't think they should be separated when speaking about this historical place, that is very much alive in the present days as well!

This breathtaking view I saw when I approached the tower entry from the square. That's one of my favorite captures from that day. As not everyone looks up when entering that small yard, surrounded by those tall brick walls.

The tower from outside is quite impressive too, at some parts of the day it presents itself with some extra light decorations ;)

Here is how the square itself looks from one of the lower observation decks of the tower. There are many people who just go there and sit down on the floor covered with bricks, as the atmosphere is really pleasant and I'd say, creative. Lots of artists could be found here.

A narrow street starts from that dark corner up the picture. I'd recommend trying/tasting different kinds of Pecorino, that famous matured cheese from sheep milk. I promise you won't regret it :) Also, there is a typical local sweet, made from jam, fruits and nuts, also impressively delicious, unfortunately I can't recall the name, but the most of the small shops around the square offer it.

Pigeons like to watch and control everything from above. The architectural details as just stunning!

It wasn't very easy to get to the top of the tower:

It was totally worth it though!

To be able to see everything from bird eyes perspective, was a blessing to my wandering eyes :)

Plenty of small decks that give different views toward the medieval city. I am pretty sure those have been used during the defense back in those days.

Sit down, relax, watch the pigeons, walk the dog. Chat to friends. Take some sun light.

Or just watch the amusing way those clever pigeons drink water from the fountains around...

Yes, I agree that is a unique and catchy perspective from the bottom looking upward from the inside of the tower!

Your captures of sun bursts always leave me admiring the warmth felt through the screen.🔆☀️🔆

Siena has much history and remarkable architecture. The views you present us from the top are unforgettable. Thankfully your trek down the steps was much easier!👣

Searching for the unorthodox points of views is something of a passion for me. Not easy to find though :)))
Ah, I really love that sunlight diffraction effect. I think I always look for an interesting subject as these could be taken only at the edge of the shadows so composing isn't quite easy too :)))

Thanks for your time and kind support!

Reading this... feels like a caress to my eyes :) Soooo sweet of you!
I am still not sure I have my own style, after so many years with a camera in my hands but that may be it :)

That thumbnail is epic. I would love to travel to this area one day. The architecture is so cool in this little town.

Checking the EUR to USD exchange rate in the last few months... might be a good moment. And the fogs in the late autumn in Tuscany add that touch of magic... ;)
I'd spend much more time there, still plenty of places to see and take photos of :)

I think this first pigeon is just angry that it was forbidden to stand on the head of this ancient architectural detail.
Poor guy, I understand its anger. 🕊️😃I have always wondered what the world looks like through the eyes of birds and if they see it from their perspective in a much more beautiful way. At the same time, I, as a person (well, that's not 100% certain 😎) like to see the world through the eye of your lens. I don't know why, but it is always extraordinarily beautiful. Much more than it could be in reality.

Don't talk about the poor chicken like that. 😸 Pigeons are the most discriminated birds, imho. They are supposed to be symbols of peace and freedom, right? And then what - they are forbidden to be fed in the big cities, forbidden to land here and there, even birds of prey are sent to them to catch and eat them when they take up residence in a building without being invited 😔
