New Energy System: To buy or not buy the Energy Points? Calculations, Simulations and Considerations (ENG/ITA)

To buy or not buy the Energy Points? Calculations, Simulations and Considerations.
During the months of February and March, there were so many new features announced and introduced by Splinterlands.
Today I focus on the New Energy System for Ranked Battles that Splinterlands introduced on March 21, 2023.
The New Energy System replaced the previous mechanism based on the ECR (Energy Capture Rate).
Prior to this change, the ECR was an important element in the calculation of Rewards Share points, and thus was an important element because it directly proportionally influenced all rewards obtainable from victories in Ranked Battles.
If you are curious about how the calculation of Rshares points worked before the introduction of the New Energy System you can read a post of mine that I wrote in June 2022 and can be found at the following link: New Ranked Rewards: I Like Them!
With the new energy system playing with 1 energy point or playing with maximum energy points is practically the same from the point of view of the rewards received
How the New Energy System works
With the New Energy System, each player has 50 energy points available.
Each battle played consumes 1 energy point.
Each energy point recharges automatically and without cost in 1 hour's time.
Each player can purchase a maximum of 50 energy points per day.
This means that each player with the maximum energy bar can play 50 battles and can purchase a maximum of 50 energy points per day to play 50 additional battles.
How much does 1 enerty point cost?
The cost of 1 energy point is variable because it depends on the maximum league achieved:
- in the previous season
- in the current season
- during the daily focus
But that's not all because the cost of 1 energy point also varies depending on the payment method used to purchase it.
In fact, it is possible to purchase energy points using as a payment method:
- DEC tokens
- DEC-B tokens**
- Credits
In addition DEC-B tokens can be purchased with VOUCHER tokens based on the conversion rate 1 DEC-B = 0.005 VOUCHER
What is the most convenient payment method to purchase energy points?
The most convenient way to purchase 1 energy point today March 27, 2023 is to use DEC-B tokens obtained by converting VOUCHER tokens as the payment method, and the cost is $0.000624 per energy point.
To buy or not to buy Energy Points?
Is it convenient to buy energy points?
The answer to this question is not unique because it can vary from player to player because it depends on various elements:
- Win Rate
- Estimated value of the chests
- Average value of the prize in SPS tokens per battle won.
For example, for a player playing in Diamond III league the cost of 1 energy point is $0.311850 and theoretically buying an energy point will be a worthwhile purchase if the average estimated value of the reward obtainable by the player is greater than the cost of 1 energy point.
To know the estimated value of a chest, it is useful to use the tool https://splex.gg/tools/chest which calculates the estimated value of each type of chest (including or excluding the value of potions)
To know the estimated average SPS token gain of a battle victory by league and rating, the tool https://splex.gg/tools/reward_pools is useful.
I collected all the previous data into a table so that I could do some calculations and some simulations.
First simulation:
- Modern Format
- win rate 50%
- +10 energy points purchased = +10 playable battles
Second Simulation:
- Wild Format
- win rate 50%
- +10 energy points purchased = +10 playable battles
The calculations in the above two tables are useful for evaluating whether to buy energy points or not.
For example, someone who plays in the Bronze league and:
- earns at least 0.44 SPS per battle won
- has a Win rate of 50%
can buy energy points because they will get an estimated profit greater than the cost of buying energy points and only considering SPS token rewards.
For those who play in the Silver league and have a 50% win rate, the average profit from SPS tokens is not enough to cover the cost of buying energy points.
In this case, the player will need to obtain at least 2.20 silver chests for every 10 battles played to make an estimated profit.
Important notes:
- In my calculations I did not consider the situation of a player competing for the rewarded positions of the leaderboard.
In this case buying energy points especially at the end of the season could be very convenient if the energy points allow you to get a higher reward or allow you to enter among the rewarded positions - In my calculations I have not considered the possible future value of Soulbound Rewards Cards found in the chests because at the moment it is an impossible value to estimate and it will be possible to do so when the possibility of selling and buying soulbound reward cards is unlocked.
Final Considerations
The calculations I have made today will help me to evaluate the possibility of buying energy points considering especially the number of chests (daily focus and season) needed to cover the cost of buying energy points.
I hope my calculations will be useful to my readers as well.
I who usually finish seasons in Diamond league will most likely purchase energy points only in the final days of the season:
- If my win rate is above 50%.
- If I get on average at least 2 chests for every 4 battles played.
I really like the New Energy System very much because:
- it is much easier to understand especially for new players.
- offers one more option for players who like to play.
- added a new use case for DEC tokens and VOUCHER tokens that can be used to obtain DEC-B tokens which today based on my calculations are the most convenient purchase method for energy points.

Nei mesi di febbraio e marzo sono stante tante le novità annunciate e introdotte da Splinterlands.
Nel mio post di oggi mi focalizzo sul New Energy System per le Ranked Battles che Splinterlands ha introdotto il 21 marzo 2023.
Il New Energy System ha sostituito il precedente meccanismo basato sull'ECR (Energy Capture Rate).
Prima di questa modifica l'ECR era un elemento importante nel calcolo dei punti Rewards Share e quindi era un elemento importante perchè influenzava in modo direttamente proporzionale tutte le ricompense ottenibili con le vittorie nelle Ranked Battles.

Come funziona il New Energy System
Con il New Energy System ogni giocatore ha a disposizione 50 punti energia.
Ogni battaglia giocata consuma 1 punto energia.
Ogni punto energia si ricarica in automatico e senza costi in 1 ora di tempo.
Ogni giocatore può acquistare un massimo di 50 punti energia al giorno.
Questo vuol dire che ogni giocatore con la barra dell'energia al massimo può giocare 50 battaglie e può acquistare massimo 50 enerty points al giorno per giocare 50 battaglie aggiuntive.
Quanto costa 1 punto energia?
Il costo di 1 punto energia è variabile perchè dipende dalla massima lega raggiunta:
- nella precedente stagione
- nella stagione in corso
- durante la daily focus
Ma non è tutto qui perchè il costo di 1 punto energia varia anche in base al metodo di pagamento utilizzato per l'acquisto.
Infatti è possibile acquistare i punti energia utilizzando come metodo di pagamento:
- i token DEC
- i token DEC-B
- i crediti
Inoltre i token DEC-B possono essere acquistati con i token VOUCHER in base al tasso di conversione 1 DEC-B = 0.005 VOUCHER
Qual'è il metodo di pagamento più conveniente per acquistare i punti energia?
Nella tabella seguente ho calcolato il costo di 1 Energy Points in base al metodo di pagamento scelto e per i token DEC-B ho calcolato il costo in base al metodo di coversione scelto (DEC o VOUCHER).
Il modo più conveniente per acquistare 1 energy point oggi 27 marzo 2023 è utilizzare come metodo di pagamento i token DEC-B ottenuti convertendo i token VOUCHER e il costo è di 0.000624$ per energy point.
Comprare o non comprare gli Energy Points?
E' conveniente acquistare gli energy points?
La risposta a questa domanda non è univoca perchè può variare da giocatore a giocatore perchè dipende da tre elementi:
- Win Rate
- Valore stimato dei forzieri
- Valore medio del premio in token SPS per battaglia vinta.
Ad esempio per un giocatore che gioca in lega Diamond III il costo di 1 punto energia è di 0.311850$ e in linea teorica acquistare un punto energia sarà un acquisto conveniente se il valore stimato medio della ricompensa ottenibile dal giocatore sarà maggiore del costo di 1 punto energia.
Per conoscere il valore stimato di un forziere è utile il tool https://splex.gg/tools/chest che calcola il valore stimato di ogni tipologia di forziere (includendo o escludendo il valore delle pozioni)
Per conoscere il il guadagno medio stimato in token SPS di una vittoria in battaglia in base alla lega e al rating è utile il tool https://splex.gg/tools/reward_pools.
Ho raccolto tutti i dati precedenti in una tabella per poter fare alcuni calcoli e alcune simulazioni.
Prima simulazione:
- Modern Format
- win rate 50%
- +10 punti energia acquistati = +10 battaglie giocabili
Seconda simulazione:
- Wild Format
- win rate 50%
- +10 punti energia acquistati = +10 battaglie giocabili
I calcoli nelle due tabelle precedenti sono utili per valutare se acquistare i punti energia oppure no.
Ad esempio chi gioca in lega Bronzo e:
- guadagna almeno 0.44 SPS per battaglia vinta
- ha un Win rate del 50%
può acquistare gli energy points perchè otterrà un profitto stimato maggiore del costo di acquisto dei punti energia e solo considerando le ricompense in token SPS.
Per chi gioca in lega Silver e ha un win rate del 50% non è sufficiente il guadagno medio dei token SPS per coprire il costo di acquisto dei punti energia.
In questo caso il giocatore dovrà ottenere almeno 2,20 forzieri silver ogni 10 battaglie giocate per ottenere un profitto stimato.
Note importanti:
- Nei miei calcoli non ho considerato la situazione di un giocatore che lotta per le posizioni premiate della classifica.
In questo caso acquistare punti energia soprattutto alla fine della stagione potrebbe essere molto conveniente se i punti energia permettono di ottenere un premio maggiore o permettono di entrare tra le posizioni premiate - Nei miei calcoli non ho considerato il possibile valore futuro delle Soulbound Rewards Cards trovabili nei forzieri perchè al momento è un valore impossibile da valutare e sarà possibile farlo quando sarà sbloccata la possibilità di vendere e di acquistare le soulbound reward cards.
Considerazioni Finali
I calcoli che ho effettuato oggi mi serviranno per valutare la possibilità di acquistare i punti energia considerando soprattutto il numero di forzieri (daily focus e season) necessari per coprire il costo di acquisto dei punti energia.
Spero che i miei calcoli possano essere utili anche ai miei lettori.
Io che solitamente termino le stagioni in Diamond league con molta probabilità acquisterò energy points solo nei giorni finali della stagione:
- se il mio win rate sarà superiore al 50%
- se otterrò in media almeno 2 forzieri ogni 4 battaglie giocate
Il New Energy System mi piace davvero molto perchè:
- è molto più semplice da capire soprattutto per i nuovi giocatori
- offre un'opzione in più per i giocatori a cui piace giocare
- ha aggiunto un nuovo caso d'uso per i token DEC e per i token VOUCHER che possono essere utilizzati per ottenere i token DEC-B che oggi in base ai miei calcoli sono il metodo di acquisto più conveniente per gli energy points.

It looks like energy isn't really worth it that much at the higher leagues. I am in Silver so it might be worth it if I am close to an extra chest or two but otherwise it's not worth it.

Yes in precise situations it can be advantageous to purchase extra energy points.
If you play in Silver and you are in Silver I based on my calculations you should often have an advantage to buy energy points especially if you have a good win rate

Mi piace un sacco il nuovo sistema! Molto più user-friendly e semplice da capire: per i nuovi utenti sarà sicuramente meno ostico e più familiare, dato che riprende i sistemi tipici dei giochi free2play :)

Thanks for these awesome posts! I like your calculations, but, as you said, it is hard to give the right answer as we have no idea how much are Soulbound cards valued... Before I saw your posts, I thought that there is no way that buying energy points could be profitable at all without counting the "approximate" value of the cards!
I'm also in a similar situation to you... Finishing in Diamond 1 or Diamond 2 usually, but I got the conclusion that it's maybe better to buy energy somewhere in the middle, while we are playing in the GOLD leagues as there, the win ratio is usually much better...

I had thought about it too but in my opinion for us who collect Diamond chests it should not be convenient to buy the points when we are in Gold because even if the win rate is higher and we earn more chests the estimated value of the chests is worth almost half while the value of the rewards in SPS almost 1 third. This means that we should have a win rate really close to the maximum to have a positive estimated profit.
Obviously if we look at a possible long term the Soulbound cards could change all the calculations greatly and positively...

Great analysis. I am loving the new energy system but 24 games is enough per day for me, regardless of the rewards, except maybe as you said for some end of season ranking things.

Questo nuovo metodo dell’energia mi piace. Off Topic: cosa è il DEC-B, ho letto qualche post in inglese ma non ho capito benissimo…. Peró mi sembra che sia bene acquistarlo… una sensazione.
Ciao @stefano.massari si piace anche a me il nuovo meccanismo di acquisto punti energia.
E' la versione soulbound dei DEC quindi li puoi solo spendere per acquistare alcune cose come i punti energia ad esempio e come alcuni elementi nelle land.
Non li puoi usare ad esempio per acquistare carte ma in linea generale ricordati questo consiglio: quando vedi che qualcosa è acquistabile con i DEC-B conviene sempre utilizzarli rispetto ai DEC perchè risparmi sempre il 20% sull'acquisto e nel caso che ho mostrato nel mio post se li acquisti con i VOUCHER e se il valore dei VOUCHER dovesse rimanere come oggi o scendere potresti ottenere uno sconto ancora maggiore ;)
Ad esempio se hai dei plot i DEC-B ti permetteranno di risparmiare ;)

Yes I don't think it is profitable to spend 150 DEC in gold if you collect Diamond chests but it can become profitable in precise situations when you are in Diamond and collect Diamond chests and have a good win rate ;)

Si se c'è un motivo valido come il tuo in quel caso va sembre bene, poi l'acquisto dei punti energia potrebbe essere una opzione valida durante la fine della stagione, concordo e questa sarà la mia strategia.
Ricordati che quando devi comprare i punti energia conviene sempre farlo con i DEC-B e non con i DEC ;)

Il nuovo sistema è meglio del precedente. Comunque se giochi tutti i giorni 24 partite le hai tranquillamente e se non giochi sempre quando giochi hai 50 partite che sono tantissime.
