On June 17, 2023, I left together with my wife, daughter and two sisters to the island of Ischia to join my parents who were on vacation in Casamicciola.

It was a very short vacation because it lasted only two days, and on the evening of June 18 we left again, but it was a very nice two days because I visited a place I had never visited before and especially because I spent some carefree time with my family.

My father loves nature very much and he passed his love to the whole family.
On the afternoon of June 17, he proposed us to visit the La Mortella Gardens which are located in the municipality of Forio on the island of Ischia, and we accepted this proposal very gladly.

In today's post I go out from my posting comfort zone (Hive and Hive games) and share a visit to the garden in the valley of La Mortella gardens and share a selection of the more than 600 photos I took during the visit to the gardens.

The La Mortella Gardens are located in the municipality of Forio, in the northwestern part of the island of Ischia.

La Mortella gardens have two entrances because the gardens cover a very large area of about two hectares = 20000 square meters.
We entered from the entrance from via Francesco Calise Operaio Foriano because we arrived by bus and did not need to park our car otherwise we would have had to enter from the north entrance of the gardens which is the only entrance with a parking area nearby.

La Mortella gardens are among the most beautiful gardens in Italy, and at the entrance there is a plaque that says: You are visiting the most beautiful garden in Italy 2004 - Competition sponsored by Briggs $ Stratton - USA.

A little bit of history

La Mortella gardens are the gardens surrounding the home of the Waltons: William Walton and his wife Susana Walton.
William Walton was a composer, actor and orchestral director and is considered one of the greatest English composers of the twentieth century.
La Mortella gardens were created by Susan Walton beginning in 1956.
For the construction of her gardens Susana Walton initially had the help of architect Russell Page but then proceeded according to her own tastes and ideas.
The gardens were not opened to the public until 1990 when Susana Walton donated this area to the Walton Foundation, which is a nonprofit foundation she created.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Walton are no longer living but their ashes are enshrined in two hillside garden areas of La Mortella Gardens.

Visit to the valley garden

After paying the entrance fee (us adults: 12 euros-my daughter: 7 euros) we entered the garden.

The name gardens and not garden is due to the structure of this beautiful green area that extends over several levels and you can identify two large gardens:

• valley garden
• garden on the hillside

On the tour route there are many signs with useful Qrcodes that allow visitors to get information on their own without the need to buy a guidebook.

Near many plants and trees are signs indicating the geographical origin and name.

In the following two photos you can see the Ginkgo biloba tree, which is an ancient tree.
According to Wikipedia it is a very ancient tree because it has origins dating back 250 million years, which is why it is also nicknamed "living fossil."

In the following photos you can see just a few of the many types of trees that live in these gardens.

It is always a spectacle to be surrounded by nature, and the dominant color everywhere in the park is green!

It was also nice to walk through avenues, stone steps and small climbs.
Every spot in the park is manicured and clean.

In La Mortella gardens there are three greenhouses, two are located in the valley garden while the third is in the hillside garden.
The first greenhouse we encountered on our route was the Victoria's House.

This greenhouse is called Victoria in honor of the plant that is grown inside: the Victoria, a giant water lily that has parts submerged in water and parts outside the water.
The parts submerged in water are covered with spines, the Victoria has large floating leaves that can reach up to three meters in diameter and can support the weight of a child.

In the following two photos you can see the water lily present in the greenhouse.

I read in the information poster that this beautiful and peculiar plant has a single bud that opens at nightfall with a white and very fragrant flower that closes the next day.
The peculiarity is that the next day the evening bloom is repeated but the flower is changed because it opens again but this time the flower has purple-red petals.

In short this beautiful giant water lily alternates between female and male flowers and each bud lives two days.
How fascinating nature is!

Unfortunately, I could not wait to photograph the flower once it had bloomed, but you can look at the photos below the informational poster that was posted in front of the greenhouse (see next photo).

I took more photos inside the greenhouse to photograph the other plants present.

The more I walked, the more fascinated I became by the many colors of the plants and the many flowers in this garden.

In the following photos you can see some of the flowers that particularly impressed me with their colors and beauty.

In the valley garden there are also beautiful fountains.

There is the fountain with 4 basins which, however, was turned off on the day of my visit.

Surrounding the fountain are four benches and behind it are falls, ferns and hortensias.

I also really liked the high fountain that you can see in the following two photos.

Very very beautiful is the area where the Big Fountain is located that you can see in the following photos.

Continuing on our way, near the food court that included a tea room, we arrived at the second greenhouse, the tropical greenhouse, inside which we admired various blooms of orchids.

Leaving the tropical greenhouse, we visited a voliera.

On our way through the Valley Garden we also met a cute kitten....

...and a red and green parrot although I don't like to see birds locked in cages...

The downstream garden is also traversed by a stream designed by architect Russel Page who helped Susana Walton create this beautiful garden.
The stream runs through part of the path of the valley garden as you can see from the following photo.

Visiting the valley garden was a very nice experience for me.
I did not know this garden and did not have high expectations but as I crossed the threshold of the entrance I was amazed to find so much beauty around me.

The particularity of this garden is that at every point there is always one view: the greenery and colors of nature.
I felt almost transported to a world light years away from the world I see every day made up mostly of cars, traffic and concrete.

I saw and caressed plants that I did not know or had only seen in photos such as the carnivorous plant in the following photo.

The way this garden was built shows in my opinion and unequivocally the immense love Susana Walton felt for nature.
Susana Walton and her husband William chose to live for many years within a beautiful green area that they created from a rocky, volcanic place, and they also chose their garden as a place to rest after death because their ashes are enshrined in two particular areas of the hillside garden.

The hill garden is equally beautiful and special but I stopped here for today also because I would probably have exceeded the word limit of a post on Hive.

Giardini La Mortella: giardini assolutemente da visitare! - Isola d'Ischia

Il 17 giugno 2023 sono partito insieme a mia moglie, mia figlia e le mie due sorelle verso l'isola d'Ischia per raggiungere i miei genitori che erano in vacanza a Casamicciola da 10 giorni.

E' stata una vacanza molto breve perchè è durata solo due giorni e la sera del 18 giugno siamo ripartiti ma sono stati due giorni molto belli perchè ho visitato un luogo che non avevo mai visitato prima e soprattutto perchè ho trascorso del tempo spensierato con la mia famiglia.

Mio padre ama molto la natura e ha trasmesso questo suo amore a tutta la famiglia.
Il pomeriggio del 17 giugno ci ha proposto di andare a visitare i giardini La Mortella che si trovano nel comune Forio dell'isola d'Ischia e noi abbiamo accettato questa proposta molto volentieri.

Nel post di oggi condivido la visita ai giardini La Mortella e condivido una selezione delle oltre 600 foto che ho scattato durante la visita ai giardini.

I Giardini La Mortella si trovano nel comune di Forio, nella parte nord-occidentale dell'isola di Ischia.

Ci sono due ingressi perchè i giardini La Mortella ricoprono un area molto grande di circa due ettari = 20000 metri quadrati.
Noi siamo entrati dall'ingresso da via Francesco Calise Operaio Foriano perchè siamo arrivati in autobus e non avevamo necessità di parcheggiare l'auto altrimenti saremmo dovuti entrare dall'ingresso a nord dei giardini che è l'unico ingresso con un area parcheggio nelle vicinanze.

I giardini La Mortella sono tra i giardini più belli d'Italia e all'ingresso è esposta una targa in cui c'è scritto: Stai visitando il giardino più bello d'Italia 2004 - Concorso promosso da Briggs $ Stratton - USA.

Un pò di storia

I giardini La Mortella sono i giardini che circondano la casa dei Walton: William Walton e la moglie Susana Walton.
William Walton era un compositore, attore e direttore d'orchestra ed è considerato uno dei più grandi compositori inglesi del novecento.
I giardini La Mortella sono stati creati da Susan Walton a partire dal 1956.
Per la costruzione dei suoi giardini Susana Walton si è avvalsa inizialemente dell'aiuto dell'architetto Russell Page ma poi ha proseguito secondo i suoi gusti e le sue idee.
I giardini sono stati aperti al pubblico solo nel 1990 quando Susana Walton ha donato quest'area alla Fondazione Walton che è una fondazione no-profit creata da lei.
Entrambi i coniugi Walton non sono più in vita ma le loro ceneri sono custodite in due aree del giardino in collina dei giardini La Mortella.

Visita del giardino a valle

Dopo aver pagato il biglietto di ingresso (noi adulti: 12 euro - mia figlia: 7 euro) siamo entrati nel giardino.

Il nome giardini e non giardino è dovuto alla struttura di questa bella area verde che si estende su più livelli ed è possibile individuare due grandi giardini:

• giardino a valle
• giardino in collina

Il percorso è disseminato da cartelli con utili Qrcode che permettono ai visitatori di avere informazioni in completa autonomia senza la necessità di acquistare una guida.

Vicino a molte piante e alberi ci sono dei cartelli che indicano la provenienza geografica e il nome.

Nelle due foto seguenti puoi vedere l'albero Ginkgo biloba che è un albero antichissimo.
Secondo Wikipedia è un albero molto antico perchè ha origini risalenti a 250 milioni di anni fa e per questo motivo viene soprannominato anche "fossile vivente".

Nelle foto seguenti puoi vedere solo alcuni dei tanti tipi di alberi che vivono in questi giardini.

E' sempre uno spettacolo trovarsi immersi nella natura e il colore dominante in ogni punto del parco è il verde!

E' stato bello anche camminare tra viali, scalette e piccole salite.
Ogni punto del parco è curato e pulito.

Nei giardini La Mortella ci sono tre serre, due si trovano nel giardino a valle mentre la terza si trova nel giardino in collina.
La prima serra che abbiamo incontrato nel nostro percorso è stata la Victoria's House.

Questa serra si chiama Victoria in onore della pianta che è coltivata all'interno: la Victoria, una gigantesca ninfea che ha parti sommerse in acqua e parti al di fuori dell'acqua.
Le parti sommerse in acqua sono ricoperte di spine, la Victoria ha foglie galleggianti grandi che posono arrivare anche a tre metri di diametro e possono sorreggere il peso di un bambino.

Nelle due foto seguenti puoi vedere la ninfea presente nella serra.

Ho letto nel poster informativo che questa bellissima e particolare pianta ha un unico bocciolo che si apre al calare della sera con un fiore di colore bianco e molto profumato che si richiude il giorno dopo.
La particolarità è che il giorno dopo la sbocciatura serale si ripete ma il fiore è mutato perchè si apre nuovamente ma questa volta il fiore ha i petali di colore rosso porpora.
In pratica questa bellissima ninfea gigante alterna fiori di sesso femminile e fiori di sesso maschile e ogni bocciolo vive due giorni.
Quanto è affascinante la natura!

Purtroppo non ho potuto fotografare il fiore una volta sbocciato ma puoi guardare le foto che trovi sotto al poster informativo che era affisso davanti alla serra (vedi foto seguente).

Ho scattato altre foto all'interno della serra per fotografare le altre piante presenti.

Più camminavo e più rimanevo affascinato dai tanti colori delle piante e dei tanti fiori presenti in questo giardino.

Nelle foto seguenti puoi vedere alcuni fiori che mi hanno particolarmente colpito per i loro colori e per la loro bellezza.

Nel giardino a valle ci sono anche delle belle fontane.

C'e la fontana a 4 vasche che però era spenta il giorno della mia visita.

Intorno alla fontana ci sono quattro panchine e dietro ci sono calle, felci e ortensie.

Mi è piaciuta molto anche la fontana alta che puoi vedere nelle due foto seguenti.

Molto molto bella è l'area in cui si trova la Fontana Grande che puoi vedere nelle foto seguenti.

Continuando il nostro percorso, vicino al punto di ristoro che comprendeva anche una sala da the, siamo arrivati alla seconda serra, la serra tropicale, al cui interno abbiamo ammirato varie fioriture di orchidee.

Usciti dalla serra tropicale abbiamo visitato una voliera.

Nel nostro percorso nel Giardino a valle abbiamo incontrato anche un simpatico gattino...

...e un pappagallo rosso e verde anche se non mi piace vedere gli uccelli chiusi in gabbie...

Il giardino a valle è attraversato da un ruscello disegnato dall'architetto Russel Page che ha aiutato Susana Walton a realizzare questo splendido giardino.
Il ruscello percorre parte del percorso del giardino a valle come puoi vedere dalla foto seguente.

Visitare il giardino a valle è stata per me un'esperienza molto bella.
Non conoscevo questo giardino e non avevo grandi aspettative ma come ho varcato la soglia dell'ingresso mi sono meravigliato di trovare tanta bellezza intorno a me.

La particolarità di questo giardino è che in ogni punto si ha sempre un'unica visuale: il verde e i colori della natura.
Mi sono sentito quasi trasportato in un mondo lontano anni luce dal mondo che vedo tutti i giorni fatto prevalentemente di macchine, traffico e cemento.

Ho visto e accarezzato piante che non conoscevo o che avevo visto solo in foto come la pianta carnivora nella foto seguente.

Il modo in cui è stato costruito questo giardino mostra secondo me e in modo inequivocabile l'amore immenso che Susana Walton provava verso la natura.
Susana Walton e suo marito William hanno scelto di vivere per tanti anni all'interno di una bellissima area verde che hanno creato partendo da un luogo roccioso e vulcanico e hanno scelto il loro giardino anche come luogo dove riposare dopo la morte perchè le loro ceneri sono custodite in due particolari aree del giardino in collina.
Il giardino in collina è altrettanto bello e particolare ma mi sono fermato qui per oggi anche perchè avrei probabilmente superato il limite di scrittura di un post su Hive.
