The weariness of the city manifests itself in the people who bring home bread with mortadella, in the streets teeming with vendors offering gold knowing you won’t buy it, in the stately buildings of Valencia inhabited by people you wouldn’t refer to as “sir,” in the face of a man eating a soda cracker and wiping his mouth on the flag he proudly poses with at a protest, in the police officer checking his phone during his watch at the Chinese store, in the elderly woman asking for money at the traffic light, in the puddle of a pothole that has gone unpatched for a year, celebrated with a cake, and also in the mirror of the mall you visit to cool off from the scorching heat.

El desgaste de la ciudad a donde vaya lo veo en la gente que lleva a su casa pan con mortadela, en las calles repletas de vendedores que te ofrecen oro sabiendo que no les comprarás, en los edificios señoriales habitados por gente que no llamas señor, en el rostro del tipo que come una galleta de soda y se limpia la boca en la bandera con la que posa en una protesta, en el policía que revisa su celular durante su turno de vigilia en el local del chino, en la anciana que pide dinero en el semáforo, en el charco del hueco que cumplió un año y se lo celebraron con torta, y también en el espejo del centro comercial que visitas nada más para refrescarte del calor infernal.
