"Ethereum Killer" ICP is Suing Meta for Using the Infinity Symbol
The most notable thing to ever be done by the "Ethereum Killer" known as Internet Computer ICP... Suing Facebook's parent company Meta.
ICP's parent company DFINITY is suing Meta
I gotta be honest, I came across this scrolling through the toxic waste pool that is /r/CryptoCurrency on Reddit. When I saw the headline I just stopped scrolling and laughed. I remember back when Internet Computer ICP launched and everyone was talking about how it was going to kill Ethereum. The price of the token skyrocketed to highs over $700 before crashing down hard to current prices around $13. The only infinite thing about this supposedly "infinite blockchain" is infinite disappointment lol.
Created by parent company DFINITY, Internet Computer was supposed to be an infinitely scalable blockchain "you can build anything on". It touts millisecond block times and instant transactions. It aims to replace the need for cloud storage, databases, and servers by doing all of those things on its blockchain. I dunno about you, but to me that sounds pretty insane. Maybe my brain just isn't big enough to comprehend the enigma that is ICP...
After the token crashed and everyone stopped crying about it (for the most part), ICP was long forgotten. It's crazy how fast it launched, skyrocketed, and crashed in one big hyper-cycle. I honestly had almost forgotten about it myself, and really only remember it from people crying about the price on Reddit. That is, aside from all the influencers that got paid to shill it. Sounds an awful lot like the Solana story to me, but I just cringe when I read the words "Ethereum killer". I mean, they raised $195 million to build this thing, so it has to be good, right?
DFINITY wasn't going to let their name fade away too much. They had to do something since their ICP baby is totally failing. That's when their board of directors were sitting in a meeting bouncing back and forth ideas about how to become relevant again... Then it hit them. They decided that they own the infinity symbol and decided to go after the big bad parent company of Facebook, Meta. Check out the official court complaint if you wanna read all the juicy details. If you're not ready to be bored into oblivion, continue reading.
So DFINITY is claiming that Meta is using it's "DFINITY mark", which is just a fucking infinity symbol... They claim to own copyrights to the symbol along with different color variations. They also claim that DFINITY and Meta seek to attract the same users because they are interested in similar things (lol). I guess it's copyright infringement if you have a similar goal - attracting people that are interested in blockchain tech.
In the complaint, DFINITY is claiming that Meta (one of the biggest companies in the world) has profited and gained sales by using their logo. As if the biggest social media company that exists needs to pray on little old DFINITY to get money... They're literally trying to blame their failure as a company on Meta using the infinity symbol. I can't read through this complaint without laughing. Like this is seriously the most comical court document I've ever read.
DFINITY is look really desperate based on this court filing. They cant really think they're going to win a court case against the Zuck himself, can they? I mean, I can't even imagine the caliber of lawyers and shit that Meta has on staff. We're talking about Mark Zuccerlord, people. The reptilian overlord that gets a hard-on for stealing and selling user data. There's no chance that he's going to let DFINITY stand a chance against them in court.
Sure, the logos do slightly resemble each other, but Meta owns the copyright to its own logo so.... How can DFINITY claim they're using their logo? I just can't help but imagine Mark Zuckerberg in his office with his weird slithery tongue whipping around as he tells his lawyers to crush them in court. I just see him as this reptilian super villain lol.
Ok, I'll stop. I think the cough medicine I took may be a big factor in why I find this so funny. Aside from the fact that DFINITY doesn't own the fucking infinity symbol.
Thanks for reading! Much love.

I suspect that this will be one of those trademark disputes that goes on forever.
I have a feeling of that as well. At least it'll be funny to read about.

It's going to be a long lawsuit and lots of money will be burned. Even if they do win, I don't see it helping them much financially.

They're just committing financial suicide.

Don't know what to say but this is utterly insane!
Thanks, you made my day. Made me laugh.

Right! Glad you enjoyed it.

Pretty sure they aren't going to win this one. The infinity sign is hard to claim.

No chance

So DFINITY decided to commit financial suicide? All the best for them lol

My thoughts exactly lol

What I don't get about any of this is people want decentralization and don't realize that means ANYTHING goes. The good, the bad, the ripping each others logos off. It honestly feels like blockchain is just in a suing game with companies and the only people that fuels are the lawyers and the SEC. Seems very counter productive

It's a centralized battle for relevance. It's honestly really sad to see.
