Lorenzo Musetti y su primer título. // ATP 500 de Hamburgo [Esp – Eng]

Para los que añoramos seguir viendo tenis de calidad, luego del retiro de la actual generación; resulta una gran satisfacción poder ver a jóvenes talentos, alzar títulos importantes dentro del circuito profesional. En un “Hamburg European Open” con tantas sorpresas este año, solo se mantuvo una de las tantas constantes y fue la llegada a la final, del primer cabeza de serie del torneo, el español Carlos Alcaraz. Pero del otro lado de la llave, se presentó un jugador inesperado, que se fue abriendo paso en cada jornada, hasta alcanzar el ansiado quinto partido, me refiero al italiano Lorenzo Musetti.

El nacido en Carrara y de apenas 20 años de edad, pudo demostrar su buen manejo del juego sobre pistas lentas, superando a grandes talentos del top 100 como Dusan Lajovic (2-1), Emil Ruusuvuori (2-0), Alejandro Davidovich (2-0) y Francisco Cerúndulo (2-0); para llegar pisando fuerte a la cita de hoy domingo, ante el prodigio español que hizo lo propio ante jugadores como Nico Kuhn (2-1), Filip Krajinovic (2-0), Karen Kachanov (2-0) y Alex Molcan por (2-0). No obstante el favoritismo caía del lado de Carlitos, por su condición de top 10 en el ranking (Nº 6) y su conocido récord de imbatibilidad en las 5 finales previas a este evento; mientras que para Lorenzo era su primera vez en una opción a título; y de quien debo destacar la impresión que me dejó su encuentro en semifinal, ante Francisco Cerúndulo. Esto porque si bien demostró un alto nivel ofensivo, también desperdició algunas opciones claras, sobre todo ese match point en el segundo set, con un servicio por debajo del brazo, que fue bien restado por Fran y que luego pudo quebrar para forzar el tie break.

Y si Lorenzo mejoró su efectividad, Carlos no se quedó atrás al superar a un gran rival en el eslovaco Alex Molcan, con quien tuvo que recurrir al desempate para poder definir un primer set muy reñido. Sin embargo noté a Alex muy lento y con poca movilidad de piernas, me atrevería a decir que parecía estar lesionado, pero quizás su gran esfuerzo ante Carreño, mermó sus capacidades.

Ya enmarcados en el partido de hoy en Hamburgo, las cosas no podían arrancar mejores para los jugadores y para el público; con Alcaraz al servicio y Musetti en plan ofensivo desde el resto consiguiendo un tenaz y atrevido break; y aunque Carlitos le devolvió el favor con gran clase (globo imparable), ya se podía avizorar una batalla deportiva al mejor estilo de Federer y Nadal, motivada en mi opinión, por el parecido técnico y a la admiración que ambos jóvenes, han manifestado su admiración (Lorenzo por Roger y Carlos por Rafa) de manera respectiva.

Ambos muchachos exhibieron seguridad en su juego, ataque eficiente hacia el frente y pulso a tono al ensayar drop shot bien ceñidos a la red; pero la diferencia la marcó el italiano en el séptimo game, con un resto maravilloso de revés (con mucho efecto y a una sola mano), que hizo daño en la defensa del español, haciéndole dejar la bola en la red en varias ocasiones importantes. Ese 6-4 marcó un importante inicio para Lorenzo, que ha mantenido esa constante de comenzar ganando y es algo clave para cualquier atleta, generando confianza y soltura para seguir atacando.

Eso le ayudó a mantener la calma (en realidad ambos mostraban tranquilidad y mucha concentración), sobre todo cuando Musetti le volvió a quebrar al primer game. Los intentos de Alcaraz verían sus frutos al extremo del décimo game para forzar el tie break, una situación hizo notar el gran nivel del partido, digno de una final ATP 500; ver la lucha y esfuerzo sin descanso de cada jugador, es de las mejores cosas que tiene el tenis.

Increíblemente Musetti sacaba para el partido y Alcaraz seguía resistiendo, fabricando cada punto con la firmeza propia de los más experimentados. El manejo de la presión fue clave para que el de Murcia mostrara su ímpetu en cancha; donde ambos dieron gran ejemplo de lo que significa no rendirse, porque aunque Lorenzo tuvo 3 match points, incluido una inoportuna doble falta del italiano. Este era el primer desempate que perdía Lorenzo en su corta carrera y nos fuimos al tercer set, para seguir con las emociones y el drama de una gran final entre chamos de 19 y 20 años.

La tercera y decisiva manga, mostró la paridad de dos competidores que no mostraban mayores debilidades; Carlitos con su potente forehand cruzado y su mágico drop shot, mientras Lorenzo hacía gala de un revés educado y controlado, tanto en ataque como en defensa. No obstante el servicio de ambos determinó el resultado, ya que por parte de Alcaraz, considero le faltó variarlo más hacia la T, Carlos sacó casi siempre hacia el revés de Lorenzo y ese era su mayor fortaleza, por ello le contrarrestaba con tranquilidad y eficiencia.

El momento cumbre llegaría en el décimo game, con Carlos sacando arriba 30-15 y Musetti restando con su vistoso backhand corto, el cual ejecutó con soltura y fineza, precisamente por la falta de variedad al servicio de Carlos, incluso me parecía que Lorenzo ya sabía por donde venía la pelota, para él acertar ese revés con tanta facilidad, pero que a su vez se le veía la velocidad que tomaba al picar corto, es decir, mostraba su buen efecto en spin. El italiano restó los 3 puntos faltantes y con una pelota en la red, Carlos termina cediendo el error.

De hecho, no fue un peloteo fortuito lo que vi, sino una bien disimulada combinación de distancias en el revés de Lorenzo, su recepción corta y el siguiente BH, lo lanzó largo y tomó a Carlos movido. Por ello la incomodidad de Alcaraz, que no descifraba hacia dónde venía el pelotazo. Una semana perfecta la que ha completado Musetti y que cierra cortando la racha de Carlitos en finales. El italiano comenzó como número 62 y termina apareciendo mañana lunes, en el puesto 31 del ranking mundial. Mientras que es español también sube un puesto y queda como 5to mejor de la ATP. En mis sueños veo a estos dos jóvenes protagonizar muchos duelos de gran nivel, al mejor reflejo de Rafa y Roger, pero con la identidad propia de Alvaraz y Musetti.
