Análisis: Sebastián Báez / Domador de Campeones en Estoril [Esp - Eng]

¿Y Por qué no Sebastián Báez?

Las semifinales del torneo luso de tenis, en el complejo deportivo de Cascais, han estado de infarto; ambos partidos se decidieron con un tie break en el segundo set y posteriormente llegaron a la instancia del tercer round. Fue emocionante ver que cada atleta luchó al máximo por no quedar fuera e inscribir su nombre en la gran final de este domingo. No obstante ha prevalecido la osadía y la fé en sí mismos, del argentino Sebastián Báez y posteriormente del estadounidense Frances Tiafoe.

And why not Sebastián Báez?

The semifinals of the Portuguese tennis tournament, at the Cascais sports complex, have been heart-stopping; both matches were decided with a tie break in the second set and later reached the third round. It was exciting to see that each athlete fought to the maximum not to be left out and to inscribe his name in the great final this Sunday. However, the courage and self-belief of the Argentine Sebastián Báez and later of the American Frances Tiafoe prevailed.

Nuevamente me decanté por el encuentro del sudamericano, no podía ser de otra manera, dada mi condición de latinoamericano amante del tenis. Además el aguerrido jugador nacido en Buenos Aires, fue sencillamente intraficable, dominante e implacable; sus ansias de seguir en su gran semana competitiva, han podido más que el español Albert Ramos y su afán de reeditar su título del año pasado. Claro está, que el encuentro entre los norteamericanos Frances Tiafoe y Sebastián Korda, estuvo no apto para cardíacos.

Again I opted for the South American match, it could not be otherwise, given my condition as a Latin American tennis lover. Besides, the tough player born in Buenos Aires, was simply intractable, dominant and relentless; his desire to continue in his great competitive week, has been more powerful than the Spanish Albert Ramos and his desire to reedit his last year's title. Of course, the match between the Americans Frances Tiafoe and Sebastian Korda, was not suitable for cardiacs.

En el primer set el gaucho arrancó con todo, ganando el sorteo para sacar y ejecutando cada servicio con fuerza y colocación; igual temple mostró al resto (recepción) y sin esperar mucho, mostró su plan de juego (al menos eso pude descifrar), Sebas estuvo muy atento con el servicio a la T de Ramos y dirigió sus tiros hacia el área central del court, como incitando a su rival a que golpease la bola con toda su fuerza; lo que parece no haber notado Ramos, era el gran efecto de spin que llevaban esos tiros (astucia latina en pleno jajaja).

In the first set the gaucho started with everything, winning the draw to serve and executing each serve with strength and placement; Sebas was very attentive with the service to the T of Ramos and directed his shots towards the central area of the court, as if inciting his opponent to hit the ball with all his strength; what Ramos seems not to have noticed, was the great spin effect that those shots had (Latin cunning in full hahaha).

El veterano español cayó en la trampa tres veces, además de que Báez utilizó con éxito, una volea cruzada mortal en respuesta al intento de juego corto de Ramos. Así cayó el primer break y se dibujó la ruta a seguir para el bonarense; y mientras Albert seguía dejando sus tiros en la red, Sebastián lograba otro quiebre al cuarto game. Mi impresión cuando el catalán echó fuera su drive en el noveno game fue: "La zurda de Albert se nota cansada"; a sus 34 años le pasaba factura los intensos partidos a 3 sets, así que tendría que reaccionar.

The veteran Spaniard fell into the trap three times, and Baez successfully used a deadly crosscourt volley in response to Ramos' short game attempt. Thus fell the first break and the route to follow for the Bonarense was drawn; and while Albert continued to leave his shots in the net, Sebastian achieved another break in the fourth game. El español arrancó el segundo set con una ligera mejoría en su saque, pero la bola aún parecía ir sin fuerzas; eso le permitió a Báez contrarrestar con comodidad y potencia; incluso su backhand llegaba con mayor rapidez hacia el lado de Ramos. Para ser sincero, el argentino jugó relajado, toda la presión estuvo siempre del lado de Albert y eso le daba ventaja mental, pero Ramos Viñolas no se conformó con estar en desventaja y usó todos sus recursos para mantenerse con vida; globos, drive cruzado cortos y largos, tiros rasantes en paralelo; en fin, lo intentó todo.

The Spaniard started the second set with a slight improvement in his serve, but the ball still seemed to go limp; that allowed Baez to counter with comfort and power; even his backhand was coming faster to Ramos' side. To be honest, the Argentine played relaxed, all the pressure was always on Albert's side and that gave him a mental advantage, but Ramos Viñolas was not satisfied with being at a disadvantage and used all his resources to stay alive; lobs, short and long crosscourt drives, parallel drop shots; in short, he tried everything.

Y es así como se trabajan los juegos decisivos, más aún en la semifinal del torneo; me gusta esa actitud de Ramos de no rendirse y logró sobrevivir hasta el doceavo game, para luego definir en el tie break. En esa instancia se notó con más claridad el agotamiento físico y mental del español; estuvo 5 - 1 en el desempate y en un parpadeo, su rival se recuperó y se colocó arriba 6 - 5. Incluso Albert pudo salvar "in extremis" par de match points, que un Sebas ansioso dejaba en la red y echaba fuera por la lateral, así que logra Ramos el milagro de forzar el tercer set.

And that's how the decisive games are played, even more so in the semifinal of the tournament; I like Ramos' attitude of not giving up and he managed to survive until the twelfth game, to then define in the tie break. In that instance the physical and mental exhaustion of the Spaniard was more clearly noticed; he was 5 - 1 in the tie break and in the blink of an eye, his rival recovered and was up 6 - 5. Even Albert was able to save "in extremis" a couple of match points, that an anxious Sebas left in the net and threw out on the side, so Ramos achieved the miracle of forcing the third set.

No obstante el sobre esfuerzo del tenista barcelonés, parece haberle fundido el motor; y en contraparte, Sebastián parecía flotar sobre la pista, con una rapidez desbordante; aparecía en todos lados y cuando alguien así te devuelve todos tus tiros, desmoraliza un poco al jugador que ataca y ensaya combinaciones de drive y revés. Báez lució sensacional, quebrando al segundo, cuarto y sexto games, cerrando con marcador de 6 - 3, 6 (7) - 7 (9) y 6 - 0; en dos horas con 35 minutos. El tercer set en cero (rosco), fue evidencia de superioridad total.

However, the overexertion of the player from Barcelona, seems to have melted his engine; and on the other hand, Sebastian seemed to float on the court, with an overflowing speed; he appeared everywhere and when someone like that returns all your shots, it demoralizes a little the player who attacks and rehearses combinations of drive and backhand. Baez looked sensational, breaking in the second, fourth and sixth games, closing with a score of 6 - 3, 6 (7) - 7 (9) and 6 - 0; in two hours and 35 minutes. The third set in zero (rosco), was evidence of total superiority.

Clasifica Báez de esta manera, a su segunda final d este año, luego del Santiago Open donde fue superado por el español Pedro Martínez; en esta ocasión se medirá ante el habilidoso estadounidense Frances Tiafoe; en un partido que promete emociones y batalla deportiva a gran escala. Como nota curiosa les comento: Sebastián Báez superó esta semana a tres campeones del Estoril Open; el local Joáo Sousa (2018), al francés Richard Gasquet (2015) y Albert Ramos Viñolas (2021); por su parte Tiafoe fue finalista en 2018 y también tiene ganas de levantar el trofeo, pero como reza el dicho, todo puede pasar así que gane el mejor.
