AND EVERYONE EXPLODED

If there's one thing I hate, it's an embarrassing situation. Definitely, no one likes embarrassing situations, for me, I try to avoid it as much as possible. However, there are days when you wouldn't see it coming until it hits you right in the face. I remembered how directing my first play turned into a catastrophe due to certain things I saw coming but kept quiet about.

My school was asked to present a drama piece In fellowship coupled with other higher institutions. Because of my script writing and acting experience, I was given an opportunity to direct my first major play. I was excited about it, even though directing was not as I thought it would be, and me having to put up with so many characters from the actors. It was a lot of work finally getting everyone to work together with some still disappointing me at the last minute (an hour to the play) but I had a plan for each disappointment that came and was mentally ready to face it all.

When I went to pick the major character in the play alongside some of the actors, I noticed she was wearing a short gown, not too short, but too short for a religious gathering. I asked her hope that wasn't what she will be wearing because I allowed everyone to choose their costume (which was a big mistake by the way) and she wasn't carrying any bag like the rest. It was time to act, and I realized almost all the ladies wore rather revealing clothes. It was at this point I knew that things weren't going well but I had already asked them to choose their costume and there was no way the drama will be canceled. One of the pastors walked up to me and said "I hope your people are not sitting with what they are wearing?" I told him no, because after seeing their costume I told them on no account should they sit down because the stage they were acting on was very high.

And it was time for the act, just like what they do in most church dramas, someone came in and put some chairs on stage, (and we were on lifestreaming by the way) the girls went on stage and did the exact opposite of what I told them not to do, but at this point, there was nothing I could do because they were already on stage. Although everything was going well until the main character got to the scene that saw her die, obviously someone would have to carry her out of the stage. This was what I never saw coming. There were supposed to be two guys on stage, but one disappointed me at the very last minute and I had to double-cast him with an available lady, it was just left for the other guy to carry her. I thought about going, but I was coming up next to act the climax of the very interesting drama... Just as I was begging a guy from the congregation to help assist the other guy on stage, the one on stage just carried her up from her waist, and boom and gown went up with it.

This totally changed the vibe of the whole drama, as the youth congregation went wide. I was deeply embarrassed for her because it was partly my fault and I was the director here. Immediately after the drama I had a lot of explaining to do to the pastorate and a lot of calming down and wiping tears to do for the actors. For them, it was as though that moment of a wardrobe malfunction killed the message In the drama play.
I learned my lesson and since then I ensured I always choose the costumes any play I'm directing uses. I also ensure to tag two to three guys along for my play to help with stage management and logistics and be alert for any unforeseen circumstances.

Thanks for stopping by my blog today, until next time.

I can imagine tha tthis was more embarassing for the young lady more than it was for you. I know you were embarassed because you were the director but these young ladies have to bear some responsibility as well. It is good however that some valuable lessons were learn from this scenario.

Yes, that was why I said I had to do a lot of counselling and consoling. I couldn't even scold her for her mistake because I knew it had more impact on her.

Also if I was a girl, It would have been less wired talking about it with her... But then it was still my responsibility to get everyone through the mess no matter how embarrassed I was

To know that the drama was streamed live made the whole story unpleasant the more. This is so embarrassing to you and to the lady as well. The lesson learnt through this experience and your plans going forward is nice

Yes indeed, every experience definitely has its lessons good or bad. At the end of the day they knew better to always listen to the director to avoid such mistakes again

This was same reason they crapped out choreography in our church. Anything can happen. Sorry though I understand how it felt
