Junk Silver Series; 1999 Macau 100 Patacas; Macau's Return to China Commemorative Coin.

For clarification from a previous post, I’ve deliberately named this series of posts; Junk Silver Series as a ‘play’ on words. While the #sgs community at large apply this colorful colloquial term to all silver business coins, I will be referring to the literal and historical Chinese Junk ship. As we say, “Together we learn.”

“Black birds tend to like shiny things.” ~ The Bloody Raven

A part of my Stacking adventures are the semi-quarterly planned expeditions to see Jim at my not-so-local-enough Coin shop and find what shiny goods he has in stock. That clear fall day yielded me a Portuguese coin, a 5 oz. Scottsdale Stacker round, an RCM Commemorative of the Bluenose Schooner, a handful of free coin capsules and this lovely Macau Commemorative silver coin. This was an elusive coin that I had an eye on Ebay.ca for some time. A piece that resisted shedding it’s typical issue premium until the day I walked into Jim’s store.

The Silver Coin.

As a combined purchase I got even a sweeter deal off the current sale tag price, and I paid in cash. The sweetest is this Macau coin that came complete with all the bulky, yet original oriental boxes. This was one of a group of five packages inside a tall glass display case and I’m thinking of getting another one should any remain on my next expedition.

Why this coin is significant to me?

The ships of both cultures on the same face are emblematic of my Asian ancestry, the west meeting the east. A Portuguese caravel and a Chinese junk with Macau in the background, the gold gilded inset of the Historical Ma Gao Temple. Officially this coin celebrated the establishment of Macau as a special Administrative Region on December 1999.

I see it a bit different. My direct ancestors sought the freedom and opportunities in the western world a few generations ago. The immigrants of Chinese from Macau and Hong Kong just prior to 1997 were not much different than those who came to British Columbia in 1858.

Edge; Segmented Reeding

Ghostly echoes of past Sojourners.

1999 was some year. I remember pulling plenty of long shifts at my first health facility to pay down my new huge mortgage on my first home. The years leading up to 1999 was the steady inflow of Asians coming into Vancouver to make it their home, it was almost like an exodus. There was an unspoken underlying fear of the incoming Communist management at both Hong Kong and Macau. Uncertainty to the point that economic capital couldn’t afford to wait for assurances made it’s move and spilled upon the shores of a city remembered by an earlier generation of Chines sojourners as the ‘Saltwater city’.

The New Sojourners

Their mothers or guardian drove a conservative BMW, Benz, SAAB or similar styled sedan. When I had my sons enrolled into a reputable Christian private school their class comprised more than 90% Asian. While my children were subsidized enrollment I can see many students were dropped off and picked up in those expensive cars. I drove an old Honda at the time, which cost me less than it was to insure it.

Many students are young boys and girls of Senior High school aged from well-to-do families that lived here while their executive manager father continued to work in Hong Kong or China.

At parent Teacher meetings they often keep to themselves at first and that was understandable even from the local born Chinese living in Vancouver. Most immigrant parents spoke Mandarin and decent ‘Engrish’. There were a few families that spoke Portuguese that gathered at a specific area in the school, likely from Macau, few spoke Cantonese. I sometimes got the feeling that I wasn’t worth getting to know but the Teaching staff were awesome.

By this time the new immigrants have successfully integrating within the greater Asian community to some extent. Business and development boomed sending real estate prices skyward. The City of Richmond located south of Vancouver saw a huge boom of Asian oriented shopping centers and condominium properties. In effect the city of Richmond became the new modern Chinatown. Yes, that Investment capital came and as always there was a catch that came with it to our shores.

image.png

The Dark Side

I couldn’t help thinking how the People’s Republic of China had so much sway in the internal affairs of Canada. Allowing the flow of capital from China may have been a planned act in enticing our government to throw our doors open. An economic carrot dangled in front of our officials and law makers.

What is unsettling is my government’s lack of restrictions concerning sovereignty overreach by the Peoples Republic of China’s alleged ‘Police’ precincts located here in Canada. And the issue has not been dealt with to my satisfaction.

I hear plenty of stories around these Chinese Family support offices. The rumors from Chinese Nationals as well as Chinese Canadians are brushed aside as ‘misinformation’. I’d elaborate but at the risk of seeing Family Support officers come knocking at my door.

Stacking Crypto, Precious metals and posterity for that looming dark stormy day!

The #piratesunday tag is the scurvy scheme of Captain @stokjockey for #silvergoldstackers pirates to proudly showcase their shiny booty and plunder for all to see. Landlubbers arrrh… welcomed to participate and be a Pirate at heart so open yer treasure chests an’ show us what booty yea got!

What an engaging and introspective journey you've shared, sis! The intersection of your stacking adventures, cultural heritage, and reflections on significant historical and sociopolitical shifts adds so many layers to your experience with that Macau coin.

The coin itself is stunning not just as a collectible but as a meaningful emblem of your personal story—blending east and west, with symbols that reflect a shared history. The depiction of the Portuguese caravel and the Chinese junk meeting against the backdrop of Macau is deeply poetic, especially as it ties into your family’s narrative of migration, opportunity, and change.

Your reflections on the 1999 transition of Macau and the migration wave to Vancouver add even more depth, touching on how global events ripple through local communities and individual lives. It’s intriguing how you relate these movements to your experiences with integration, education, and the cultural dynamics within Richmond. Your vivid descriptions of the Saltwater City and its transformation into a modern-day Chinatown capture a fascinating period of economic and societal change.

It’s clear you care deeply about these issues, even when addressing concerns like sovereignty and the influence of foreign capital. Your ability to connect personal stories to broader themes makes your perspective incredibly impactful. Thank you for sharing this, sis @kerrislravenhill ... it’s both a glimpse into your life and a reflection on a much larger narrative. If you ever decide to expand this into a written piece or collection of stories, it could make for a compelling read!

Much !LUV always 🤗😘😍

This post took quite a while to think about. It started out as a fresh chapter of the Red Dragon, Teng Meng. But something got me to write about what impression and thoughts does this lovely silver coin instill in my heart.

There were so many aspects, layers, moving parts in the backdrop of an insane world we live in. My son shared his experience in the classroom children from China, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong cooperating on a problem in a private Christian classroom. I can't imagine a more beautiful sight of peace and cooperation among these children.

Then the objective of this post is to answer the call to seek the truth even against intimidation by our own or by foreign authorities. I shine a little light upon what may be a human rights crime even if it may find that my own government may be complicit in.

For the sake of my ancestors who came here before me and for a vision of many different children cooperating together to solve our future problems.

Our Prime Minister Justin Trudeau openly admired president Xi Jinping of the People's Republic of China such that Justin sent units of the Canadian Military to participate in China's National Day military parade in Beijing.
Justin getting a generous donation for his election was just the start of a litany of of questionable decisions substantially benefiting China while Canada marginally benefits.

We can't get rid of him fast enough.

This comment made me think about Budapest because I remember that there were several occassions where the Chinese president came to town and litteraly all trafic was exploded. These meetings always meant traffic jams and celebrated big.

We had a few huge Chinese retail only shopping centers as well as the big "illegal" Chinese bazar but the overall message I received there was that Orban did lots of business with the Chinese and they seemed to be on great terms.

Reading your post about the police stations made me wonder if there is such a thing in Budapest and I found this: https://telex.hu/english/2024/04/25/what-do-we-know-about-the-chinese-police-officers-who-may-soon-be-patrolling-in-hungary

https://www.rferl.org/a/reports-china-policestations-controversy-denial-hungary-serbia/32122899.html

Funny that I just found out that that police station was just around the corner of where I lived at the time haha, that being said, I never noticed any Chinese police there at the time, just a very huge population of Chinese workers as they had a lot of businesses there..

Just two articles that I found, but reading this, I have to say that it feels a bit tricky to allow such patrols in different countries, especially now that I know it's done in several countries already. I'm now curious if this is a thing here in Spain too, will see what I can find.

It's interesting to say the least..

Have a good weekend sis !LADY !PIMP

They do keep a low profile and name their Precinct some innocuous family friendly name yet purportedly act like thugs using threats, intimidation, and in some cases 'arrested' then forcibly flown back to the PROC. It's meant to keep their own Chinese nationals from going rogue. They have allegedly strong arms Canadian citizens and local media from writing or posting anything negative regarding China.

There have been plenty of Government Tendered projects won by Chinese companies that use ONLY their own nationals as their cheap workforce rather than our own local skilled workforce. And I bet these foreign companies only subcontract from other Chinese companies. I can't understand how this will benefit all Canadians if working Canadians don't have a direct stake in these infrastructure projects. It's only benefiting the corporations involved including government.

Our weak Canadian Liberal party has got to go.

I just got my Internet service back from an unexplained interruption my provider could not pin down 20 hours ago. Funny about the timing too.

I don't know what to respond to first. Just in passwords.

  1. I envy you another boat coin.
  2. There are about 11,000,000 people in my country. The official Chinese population is 3,797. There's talk of Chinese police offices here, too.
  3. When Russia invaded Ukraine, about half a million people fled to us in a matter of weeks and months. Of course, this also pushed up property prices and rents.
  4. Some of our governments invited Chinese capital here. But all Chinese investments have ended badly. Fortunately, we have a pluralistic democracy. Now we are rather afraid of China.

Vancouver took the brunt of the pre 1997 handover. I remember visiting Vancouver probably around 2010, as I was travelling downtime from the airport, there were so many shops along the road with the Chinese signs, very much like being in HK. The CCP weren't that much invasive back then, but has definitely got worse in the past 10 years

2010 was the time we hosted the Olympic winter games.
And the president of the Chinese Olympic committee was there to be handed the Olympic flag from the Vancouver Mayor.
It was ten years ago when we somehow elected a horribly weak Prime minister named Justin Trudeau.
I knew he was a terrible leader but the news media didn't do their homework.

I hear you.
Connecting the dots. I remember Trudeau accepted a big cash donation from the PROC to his election campaign. Almost immediately following the election he quietly allowed the Chinese to buy a gold mine in Inuit territory and importing Chinese workers to do the work rather than the locals. There has been a series of actions and decisions by our government in favor of the PROC.
If we don't kick the Liberals out of office we'll be forced to carry Justin's version of the Mao Red book.

I think that this design detail was inspired by a certain brand of gaming chips, after all, a significant part of Macau's economy relies on the Gaming industry there whether it'd be Poker, dog races or Mahjong.

I'm not totally sure but think Canada must first become Sovereign... Canada will also come up with its own State Constitution, once becoming a State... State Constitutions are usually very similar to the United States Constitution... No, we won't be invading Canada... The choice will be in the hands of Canadians...

I really think Trumps bottom line intention is to create a self sufficient economic block for regional security more than to put us under one flag. Our Leftist media can't see past the cleaver Trump Troll.

If the US do plan to invade Canada (my opinion much lesser of two evils), they better do it soon before China buys out my country from beneath me.

You would become one of the owners of our Coinage... States still have their own Constitutions, and have plenty of power to Govern themselves... There must be plenty of unused land up in Canada... Would you have to break free from the UK, in order to become your own Country or a State...???

I have heard of those Peoples Republic of China’s ‘Police’ precincts before. I think they discovered some in New York and other larger cities here in the U.S. I can't remember what ever became of it.

Thanks @coinjoe I kind of sad to think the lovely coins I get come largely from collectors selling their collections to supplement living expenses rather than pass them on to the next generation. But at the same time it makes me feel good supporting my coin dealer and the previous owner.
And that's why we stack.

This is a clearly a sovereignty issue and would be a conflict to your Constitution should another country try to impose their laws on Chinese nationals working there let alone imposing them on US Citizens.
They'd be closed down and sent back to China, you won't here a peep out from Leftist biased media.

That is sad that they have to sell just to get by. I wish I had a more local dealer. HOwever, my wife did come home with a lead on a possible new dealer that may have opened in the area.

Yeah, I think the ones they caught in NY were sent home, but not sure about the others. My memory is not so good anymore and have a hard time recalling short term stuff.

My provider cannot give me any explanation to the cause but the access resumed just before the Techie was scheduled to give my setup a look over.

Those "police" precincts of the CCP in other nations like Canada are concerning. They tried here in the US but were shut down once it hit the national news. It's very concerning that the CCP should have that much influence in any country, but that is their goal. Essentially to use their influence to run the world!

The silver is awesome, such a pretty coin. And since you have Asian heritage it's even more special! That was a great find at your local coin shop, sometimes they have really cool stuff. Other times they don't! lol I hope you are doing well, and glad to see some nice silver and the note as well!

That would be a tough job to kick these entities out.
The Chinese consulate is located here, the all levels of decision makers are too addicted to the incoming cash and the media, VPD and RCMP looking the other way.

I hope I can get back to the shop and pick up a second Macau coin. To me the beauty of this coin ranks up there with my top 2018 HMS Shannon silver coin. It took me a month to piece this post together part of the reason is feeling sick often the last 6-7 weeks.
